rejuvenate and revivify their many urban centres? What
can possibly be done with a New York City (the Big
Apple?!) or Tokyo, or Sao Paolo, or London and Paris
and Rome? Is this the quality of life we would want to
bring into a Golden Age?

System of measurement convenient
• In urban context, it self-referential ratio of
one distance to another distance or one size
to another size.
• City elements and their size are in some scale
ratio to the individual human being or to some
activity.
• Scale concerns to the ratios of distances people
can walk within given attention spans, distances of

Scope / Level of Urban Design
• A person 3’-10” from us is in “ close “ relationship, 8’-0” is
normal conversation distance- speak in normal voices, catches
voice and facial gestures.
• 40’-0” distance we can distinguish facial expressions
• 80’-0” distance – recognize a friend’s face
• 450’-0” we can discern body gesture,. Maximum distance at
which we can distinguish a man from a woman, or tell if
someone is waving for a taxi, catching ball , etc. ( Maximum
acceptable distance in athletic stadiums)
• 4000’-0” maximum distance for seeing people, beyond which
they are too small to be seen at all Inferences
• ‘Intimate scales ‘ of a city are usually not more than 80’-
0”across
• ‘ Urbane Spaces’ are generally around 450’-0”
• In monumental vistas ‘ greater than 4000’-0” human beings
