C.O.T. MATH 5 DLP Measurement of Time

This document outlines a mathematics lesson plan about calculating time differences between world time zones relative to the Philippines. The objective is for students to learn how to calculate time in different time zones. The lesson will include a PowerPoint presentation, activity sheets, and examples of converting times between locations like London, New York, and the Philippines by adding or subtracting the time difference in hours. APPROACH: DISCOVERY AND VISUALIZATION
I. Objective
The learners should be able to calculate time in different world time zone in
relation to the Philippines.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Measurement of Time
References: 21st Century Mathletes pp. 280-293;
T.M. pp. 110-111
Instructional Materials: Power point presentation, Activity sheets, laptop and TV.
III. Procedure
a. Presenting the new lesson
Who among you love to travel?
Where did you travel? (Answer of pupils may vary).
b. Establishing a purpose for the lesson/motivation
Do you know that when you travel to other country you will notice that
their time is different from our time? Today we will find out how these things happen.
c. Presenting instances of the new lesson
Word Problem: Gab’s mother works in London. They have constant
communication through phone calls and video calls. One day her mother told him that
she will be calling him the next day at 6:00 pm or 18:00 Philippine time. What time in
London will mother call him?
d. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1
Where does Gab’s mother work?
How often does he call his family here in the Philippines?
Why is it important to have a constant communications with your loved
ones working abroad?
What is asked in the problem?
Philippines and London belong to different time Zones so that the time
between these two countries are not the same in a particular time of the day.
We have to use the World time Zone to know or calculate the time in
different countries of the world.
e. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2
Here is a list of some countries and their time in relation to the Philippines.
Add or subtract the given number of hours to/from Manila time to get the
time in these cities:
Australia- + 1 hour and 30 minutes USA- -16 hours
New York- -13hours Canada- 13 hours
India- -2 hours United Arab Emirates—4hours
London- -8 hours Sweden- -7 hours
Brunei- same time with Philippines Bolivia- -12 hours
Taiwan- same time
If the difference between London time and Philippine time is 8 hours or our time is eight
hours ahead of London, what time will mother call Gab?
(The pupils will work on the problem and stress out that it is easier if they are going to
use 24-hour time format).

f. Developing Mastery/application
The pupils will solve the following problems:(10items)
1. 15:15 Wednesday
- 7:25 Wednesday
Time difference

g. Generalization
Based on the activity conducted, how can we calculate time in the different
world time zones in relation to the Philippines?
(Answer of answer may vary)

IV. Evaluation
Direction: Give the time to these countries when it is 5:00 pm in the Philippines.
