CONCRETE TOPPING Design Calculation

This document summarizes the design of concrete topping over a geofoam system. It presents three design methods to calculate the minimum required steel reinforcement: (1) subgrade drag criteria, (2) temperature method, and (3) equivalent strength method. The provided wire mesh reinforcement of 12.56 mm^2 was found to be sufficient as it was greater than the lower limit of 5.16 mm^2 by the subgrade drag method but less than the upper limit of 19.87 mm^2 by the temperature method.

INTRODUCTION

Concrete topping varies from 75 mm to 100 mm thick was used as finishing and was laid over the
geofoam system. It resembles a slab-on-grade over the flexible pavement. Design Methods were
taken from “Designing Floor Slabs-on-Grade” by Boyd C. Ringo, Robert B. Anderson (Aberdeen
Group, 1992) which is a reference used by many design engineers.

For this calculation report, design methods include (i) Subgrade Drag - Shrinkage Criteria, (ii)
Temperature Method, and (iii) Concrete Tension-cracking (Equivalent Strength method).
Sufficiency of applied reinforcement will be satisfied if the provided As is within the bounds of (i)
as the lower limit; and, the lesser of (ii) and (iii) as the upper limit. The following chapters present
the design criteria, formula, and computations.

B. Design Criteria

Material Properties

 Concrete Topping Compressive Strength : 3000 psi (assumed to be verified) =

20.69 MPa
 Concrete Unit Weight = 23.54 kN/cubic meter = 152 lb/ft^3
 Concrete Thermal Coefficient of Expansion = 6.5 x 10^-6 in/in/ degrees
Fahrenheit
 Wiremesh Yield Strength: 450MPa = 65 ksi (assumed as per Welded Plain Wire
Reinforcement ASTM A1064)
 Steel Modulus of Elasticity = 29 000 ksi

Other design parameters:

 The friction coefficient between concrete topping and geofoam = 1.5

(conservative assumption when no accurate data is present)
 The temperature range of exposure = 20 to 24 degrees Celcius (assumed per
https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/indoor-design-temperatures-d_109.html)
 Concrete Modulus of Rupture (MOR)psi = 7.5 sqrt(f’c)psi
 Concrete Tensile Strength = 0.4 x MOR

I. Subgrade Drag Criteria

𝐹∗𝐿∗𝑤
Formula: 𝐴𝑠 = 2∗𝑓𝑠
where

 F = 1.5
 L = 8405 mm x (1in/25 mm) x (1ft /12 in) = 28.01 ft
(longest distance between joint and free end)

 w = 151.2 lbs/ft3 x (100 mm x 1 in/ 25 mm x 1ft/12 in) = 50.4 psf

 fs = 65 000 psi / 1.5 = 43334 psi

𝑓𝑡 𝑖𝑛 305 𝑚𝑚

II. Temperature Method

𝑓𝑟∗12∗𝑡
Formula: 𝐴𝑠 = where
2∗(𝑓𝑠−𝑇∗𝛼∗𝐸𝑠)
 fr = 0.4 x 7.5 sqrt(3000) = 164.31 psi
 t = 100 mm = 4 in

 T = 68 to 75.2 degrees Fahrenheit = 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit
 𝛼 = 6.5 x 10^ − 6

𝑚𝑚
𝐴𝑏 (𝑊𝑊𝑀) = 3.14𝑥 (4 𝑚𝑚)2 𝑥 0.25 = 12.56 𝑚𝑚2 < 19.87 𝑚𝑚2

III. Equivalent Strength Method

36 √𝑓′𝑐 ∗ 𝑡
Formula: 𝐴𝑠 = 𝑓𝑠
where
 f’c = 3000 psi =
 t = 100 mm = 4 in
 fs = 43334 psi
𝐴𝑠 36 √𝑓′𝑐 ∗ 𝑡 36 √3000 ∗ 4 𝑖𝑛2 𝑚𝑚2
𝑓𝑡

𝑚𝑚2
𝐴𝑠 𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 0.38514 𝑥 100 𝑚𝑚 = 38.51 𝑚𝑚2
𝑚𝑚
IV. Acceptance Criteria

 Lower limit = 5.16 mm2

 Upper limit = Min (19.87 mm2, 38.51 mm2) = 19.87 mm2
 𝐴𝑏 (𝑊𝑊𝑀) = 3.14𝑥 (4 𝑚𝑚)2 𝑥 0.25 = 12.56 𝑚𝑚2

Therefore, 5.16 mm2 < 12.56 mm2 < 19.87 mm2 (Provided Wire Mesh Reinforcement is SUFFICIENT)
