MALE CITIZEN #1
That boy has been stealing my apples again! He's a public menace!

ALADDIN
Uh, guys, let's not do anything drastic, okay? (the GUARDS draw their swords) … Or maybe not!
(tosses an apple down to the guards)

ALADDIN
Gotta keep
One jump ahead of the bread line
One swing ahead of the sword
I steal only what I can't afford
And that's everything!
One jump ahead of the lawmen
That's all, and that's no joke
These guys don't appreciate I'm broke

(ALADDIN jumps off the cart and steals bread from a FEMALE CITIZEN)

FEMALE CITIZEN
Riff raff!

GUARD
Street rat!

MALE CITIZEN
Scoundrel!

(the HEAD GUARD stops ALADDIN, pushes him to the ground)

HAKIM
Take that!

ALADDIN
Just a little snack, guys!

(ALADDIN dodges the GUARDS' swords, then ducks behind a group of girls)

CROWD
Rip him open take it back guys!

ALADDIN
I can take a hint, gotta face the facts
I could use a friend or two

GIRLS
Oh it's sad, Aladdin's hit the bottom
He's become a one man rise in crime

WOMAN
I'd blame parents except he hasn't got em

ALADDIN
(jumps from behind the BELLY DANCER, and the crowd spots him)
Gotta eat to live, gotta steal to eat
Tell you all about it when I got the time

INSTRUMENTAL

ALADDIN
One jump ahead of the hoofbeats!

One trick ahead of disaster!
They’re quick but I’m much faster!

(ALADDIN appears from behind a building in the center of the stage, then runs into JASMINE as he
starts to jog away)

ALADDIN
Oh, sorry about that… (JASMINE continues on her way) on second thought, maybe it was an act of
fate! (he ducks behind the buildings to get in front of JASMINE, stealing an apple along the way)

JASMINE
(to a MALE CITIZEN) Oh… no thank you…

ALADDIN
(holding out the apple to JASMINE) Hungry?

JASMINE
(walking away) Did you stole that?

ALADDIN
(chases after her, stops her, and offers the apple again) The way the sultan taxes his people, some
have no choice but to steal.

JASMINE
And do you always give away your stolen goods?

ALADDIN
Only to the less fortunate… or in your case, the more beautiful! (JASMINE starts to walk away again)
You can't escape on an empty stomach!

JASMINE
(turning around) What makes you think…

ALADDIN
Look, these streets can be dangerous. You'll need a guide. What's the matter? (looks around) Don't
you trust me?

JASMINE
(takes the apple) You're very kind.

ALADDIN
The name's Aladdin, but most people call me –

HAKIM
Street rat!

ALADDIN
That too! Come on!

(they try to run, but are grabbed by the GUARDS)

GUARD
There's no sense in running, boy!! And it looks like he's got an accomplice!

ALADDIN
Hey! Leave her out of this! She didn't do anything! She's innocent –

HAKIM
Silence street rat!

JASMINE
Unhand me this instant! (she is thrown roughly to the ground) And stop calling him
street rat, he's a person just like you or me!
GUARD
Well, listen to the little royal! The way she's ordering us around, you'd think she were the princess of
Agrabah herself!

(the CROWD laughs)

JASMINE
(pulls away the cloth covering her head to reveal a crown) I am the princess of Agrabah!… (the
CROWD and GUARDS fall to the ground and bow. ALADDIN, stunned, falls a moment later)
I demand that you set this poor peasant boy free immediately, or I shall report all of you to the sultan.

HAKIM
(kneels down with the Palace Guards) A hundred apologies, your majesty, but we were only following
the law. Forgive us your highness.

JASMINE
(to the HEAD GUARD) You are to do nothing with him until I speak with my father.
(to ALADDIN) Don't worry, this will all be resolved before any harm comes to you…

ALADDIN
It's all right. I mean, thank you your highness.

(JASMIN goes to leave, but the GUARDS are still in the way)

JASMIN
You're in my way.

HAKIM
(jumps aside) A thousand pardons… your majesty! You may think you have friends in high places,
but no matter what the princess says, we're free to handle criminals as we see fit… right here on the
street! (he draws his sword)

JAFAR/OLD MAN
(entering from stage right, disguised as an old man) Stop everything! Stop everything! There you are,
my boy. Your mother and I have been so worried about you! (he pulls
ALADDIN away from the guards)

ALADDIN
And you would be…?

JAFAR
Play along, boy, unless you want to sleep with the prison mice tonight, or worse. (to the
GUARDS) I’m the boy’s father! He's always getting into trouble, this one. But he's a good boy. He
has a true heart and a noble spirit. You might almost call him a diamond in the rough. Whatever it is
he's stolen, I'm sure this will more than repay the debt. (he tosses a bag of coins to a GUARD) You'll
notice a few extra gold coins there for all your hard work.

(Set & Accent for Marketplace exits)

JAFAR
Well, that was almost too easy.

ALADDIN
Why'd you help me out like that?

JAFAR
Oh, just compassionate, I guess. Of course, one good deed deserves another. (touch Aladdin’s arms
maliciously)
ALADDIN
I had a feeling there was a catch.

CAVE
Who dares approach the Cave of Wonders? Only the diamond in the rough may enter.
All else will perish.

ALADDIN
(approaching the Cave) I don't like those odds. (turns to leave, is stopped by JAFAR)

JAFAR
Not to worry, Aladdin. I've consulted an ancient oracle. You are the diamond in the rough (ALADDIN
moves toward the Cave again)

IAGO
Yeah! Move it or lose it, Diamond Boy!

ALADDIN
I've changed my mind about this! (he tries to run away, but is stopped by JAFAR)

JAFAR
Go! Or I shall return you to the palace guards!

IAGO
Nah! Palace guards!

Abu: (tantrums) Oh oh ah ah!

ALADDIN
But –

JAFAR
Go now! There is no time to waste. And whatever you do, only touch the lamp.

IAGO
Nah!!! Only touch the lamp!

ALADDIN
Well, here goes nothing.

(he ducks into the Cave and diappears)

(CAVE of WONDERS exits)

(ACCENTS for CAVE set enters)
(ALADDIN appears high up, walking slowly into the Cave)

ALADDIN
Only touch the lamp, got it! Only touch the lamp. Only touch the lamp. Just get down there, grab the
lamp, give it to the old geezer, and call it a night. Abu, only touch the lamp… only touch – (spotting
the lamp) the lamp! (he climbs up to grab the lamp, and knocks over a piece of treasure. CARPET
jumps up) (the treasure falls away, and ALADDIN quickly grabs the lamp and ducks a cave-in, setting
the lamp on the ground downstage. CARPET also escapes the cave-in) Oh great, just great! Now
how am I supposed to get out of here?

WHOA! Hey… you trying to get out of here too? (CARPET nods) The name's Aladdin… (he shakes
CARPET's tassel) Well, this way looks blocked. Got any other ideas? (CARPET gets excited and
moves toward the lamp downstage). All I have is this lamp. Hey wait. I think something’s written here
but its just hard to make out. (Starts rubbing the lamp.)
GENIE
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's Genie!! Wow, thanks kid, you have no idea what it's like being trapped
inside that lamp for the last 10,000 years, 22 hours, and 53 seconds. I have the world's worst fungal
infection. (whispers “Down there!”, Abu scratches at the same time.)

ALADDIN
Who are you?

GENIE
I used to be Mr. JFT before I became cyanotic… I'm a Genie! And you know what that means?
You've got three, count 'em three, 1,2,3 really groovy wishes coming your way, baby.

ALADDIN
I do?

GENIE
Yeah, but before we get started, let's go over the rule book, sport. Let's see… "Guyton", “Harpers
Biochem”, “Katzung Pharma”, “Robbins”, “Fifty Shades of Gray!” Ah, here we go! "Genie Rule Book"!
Rule number one! No wishin' for more wishes! It's against Genie labor laws! Rule number two! I
can't make someone fall in love with you. I did that once for Julia Barretto! But, I didn’t know she
wanted someone who was - Rule number three! I can't raise the dead. I did on our cad lab!
Everybody freaked out!

ALADDIN
I'm your master?

GENIE
Yup! That's what we genies do. It's ALL we do. Oh, sure, it sounds like a glamorous gig, but you
gotta spend your whole life trapped inside that teeny lamp with no real freedom. But hey! This is not
about moi. It’s about you! You have no idea what's in store my friend because This is your lucky day!

GENIE

I'm sorry, princess, but rules are rules!

JASMINE
But he was only trying to feed himself –

JAFAR
We can't go changing our laws every time the princess gets a whim!

(IAGO enters stage left)

JASMINE
But the boy! What have you done with him?
JAFAR
I'm sorry to say, but the boy has already been… how to put it… disposed…completely.

JASMIN was shocked.

JAFAR
Regulations are quite clear on the matter.

JASMINE
But he only meant to help – I will tell my father about this.

(the SULTAN enters from stage right as a fanfare plays, JASMINE runs to him)

SULTAN
There you are, my lovely daughter.

JASMINE
Father, Jafar has done something terrible… (JAFAR cuts him.)

JAFAR
Aaaah, your highness! The princess and I were just discussing her upcoming marriage!
Everything is in order – the feast, the festival… the only thing we seem to be lacking is…
the groom!

SULTAN
Yes, Jasmine, you must make a decision and quickly. I promised the people of Agrabah you would
marry the next eligible suitor who seeks your hand. Our people cannot wait forever for their new
sultan.

JASMINE
Father! I hate being forced into this!

SULTAN cuts Jasmine…

SULTAN
(Sigh) Jafar, leave us. I’d like to talk to my daughter.

JAFAR and IAGO leaves.

JASMIN
Father, what foreign prince could care about our people as I do? And if I do marry, I want it to be for
love.

SULTAN
Jasmin, it’s not only this law. I’m not going to be around forever. I just want to make sure that you’re
taken cared of.

JASMIN
Please understand. I’ve never done a thing on my own. I’ve never had any real friends.

SULTAN
But Jasmin, you are a princess.

JASMIN
Then maybe, I don’t want to be a princess!

SULTAN was furious.

SULTAN
Allah forbid you should have any daughters!

SULTAN exits. JASMIN was left alone to herself.

He got 95 white Persian Monkeys!

GENIE
He got some monkeys, a bunch of monkeys

GENIE (puts to the Sultan for permission to enter the Palace)

(SULTAN allows the entourage to enter)

GENIE (CROWD)
Heard your princess was hot! Where is she?
And that, good people, is why
he got all cute and dropped by
With (sixty elephants, llamas galore) for real?
(With his bears and lions, a brass band and more) what?
(With his forty fakirs, his cooks, his bakers)
(His birds that warble on key)

SULTAN
It is a pleasure to welcome you to Agrabah. Such an impressive youth, (to JAFAR) and a Prince
besides.

JAFAR
But sire, I do not trust him.

SULTAN
Non-sense! I’m sure Jasmine will like this one.

ALADDIN
And Iim pretty sure I’ll like Princess Jasmine too.

JAFAR
Your highness, I must intercede on Jasmine’s behalf. What makes him think he is worthy of the
princess?

ALADDIN
Your Majesty, I am Prince Ali Ababwa. Just let her meet me, I will win your daughter.
JASMIN slowly enters hearing their conversation.

JASMIN
How dare you? All of you? Standing around deciding my future?! I am not a prize to be won!

SULTAN
Oh dear. Don’t worry Prince Ali, just give Jasmine time to cool down. Maybe you can join us for
dinner?

GENIE
We’ll be there!
(Sultan and Jafar leaves the stage)

ALADDIN
What am I gonna do? Jasmine wont even let me talk to her. Genie, I need help!

GENIE
If you want to court the little lady, you got to be a straight shooter, do you got it?

ALADDIN
Huh?

GENIE
Tell her… THE TRUTH!

ALADDIN
No way! If Jasmine found out I am a street rat, (defeated) she’d laugh at me. (Sigh) How I wish I am
really a Prince so that I don’t have to pretend anymore. How about you Genie? What would you wish
for?

GENIE
(Surprised) No one’s ever asked me that before. Well, freedom.

ALADDIN
You’re a prisoner?

GENIE
Well, its part of the whole Genie gig. But to be free, that is greater than all the magic in the world.

ALADDIN
Once I get Jasmine to fall in love with me, I'll use my last wish to set you free! I promise.

GENIE
You mean it? Me? Free? Oh buddy! Thank you! (beat) But Al, all joking aside, you really ought to be
yourself. That’s all you have to do.

ALADDIN
That’s the last thing I will do Genie! (a beat) If we pull this off, I’ll be happy and you’ll be free. Deal or
no deal? (Genie gives him a smile) So, how do I look?

GENIE
Like a Prince…

(ALADDIN & GENIE exits the stage)

(Add accents for the palace garden for the gathering)

(JAFAR & IAGO enters the left side of the stage)

JAFAR
Ooooooh, a genie? The street rat must have found the lamp, and now he's passing himself off as this
Prince A-blah-blah person.

IAGO
But he shoulda been trapped in the Cave of Wonders!

JAFAR
Well, we might have to do some trapping of our own. (they laugh evilly, then disappear)

(Balcony set enters)

ALADDIN
Princess Jasmine?

JASMINE
Who’s there?

ALADDIN
Its Ali - (caught himself. Clears throat) It’s Prince Ali Ababwa.

JASMINE
I do not want to see you! Who granted you permission to my private quarters? Guards! Guards!

ALADDIN
(jumps in front of her and stops her) Nonononononono! I only wanted to talk-

JASMINE
You're just like the rest! You show up and you expect me to go weak in my knees! You are not
impressing anyone especially not me!

ALADDIN
That's not why I'm here.

JASMINE
And why then are you here? You know what?! I am not interested, just go jump off the balcony!

ALADDIN
Wait! I just want to say that you’re right. You are not some prize to be won. You should be free to
make your own choices. (defeated) I’ll go now. (looks down dejectedly and goes to the edge and
steps off the balcony)

JASMINE
NO!

ALADDIN
What?! WHAT?!

JASMINE
How are you doing that?

(ALADDIN pops up)

ALADDIN
It’s a magic carpet.

JASMINE
Its lovely.
ALADDIN
So are you.

JASMINE gushes…

ALADDIN
You don’t want to go for a ride do you?

JASMINE
If I go with you, will it be safe?

ALADDIN
Sure, do you trust me?

JASMINE
What?

ALADDIN
Do you trust me?

JASMINE
Yes.

(A Whole New World starts playing)

(Balcony set exits)
(Smoke machine!!! Big Moon on the LED Wall)

(Landmarks starts entering) (Landmarks: Pyramid, Sphinx, Parthenon, Eiffel Tower, Buddha)

(CARPET appears in the background, exhausted. GENIE enters from stage left)

(ALADDIN was aghast and don’t know what to do)

GENIE
(Talking to someone on the phone) Well, my friend got a carpet! I can book you a GRAB CARPET! or
an Angkas?

GENIE
So, aren’t we forgetting something?

ALADDIN
Huh?

GENIE
First I freed you from the cave, that was wish number one. Then I turned you into fancy- prince-type
person – that was wish number two. Now all that's left is wish number three, Genie’s
FREEDOOOOOOM! So, is it deal or no deal?

ALADDIN
But Jasmine thinks I'm a Prince. And now she’s telling her father that I can become a Sultan. I can’t
keep this up on my own…

GENIE
But you said…

ALADDIN
I can’t wish you free. (beat) I’m sorry Genie.

GENIE
Fine. I understand. After all, you’ve lied to everyone else. Hey, I am beginning to feel left out.

ALADDIN
Genie –

GENIE

(JAFAR enters stage right with the GUARDS and IAGO)

JAFAR
I'll say! Seize him!

(IAGO grabs the lamp from ALADDIN and gives it to JAFAR. The GUARDS grab
ALADDIN and put him in chains)

JAFAR
(to the GUARDS) Bring me the sultan! (two GUARDS exit) At last, the kingdom will be mine! (he
rubs the lamp)
GENIE
(comes out while taking a bath and singing) Look Al, if you're here to apologize, you're too late. But
as long as I've got you here, could you scrub my left shoulder blade? It gets so cramped in here –
EEEK! I do not think you are him!

JAFAR
I believe you owe me three wishes.

ALADDIN
Don't do it, Genie!

GENIE
I got no choice, Al.

IAGO
Ah Ah Ah! Whoever holds the lamp controls the genie. It's in the genie rule book!

(the GUARDS enter with JASMINE and the SULTAN)

JASMINE
Let us go! (the GUARDS throw them to the ground) How dare you treat the sultan this way?

SULTAN
Jafar!

JAFAR
Everybody who's got three wishes coming, raise their hand. (beat, then he raises his hand) Oops,
looks like it's only me! Genie! For my first wish, I wish to rule the
kingdom! Make me the sultan.

IAGO
Ah, The Sultan!

(GENIE grants the wish. The SULTAN clutches his chest)

GENIE
You're the sultan. Impressive… if your last name was Pepper, you'd be Sultan Pepper! And, and you
don't look good up close you should be Ja-Faaaar!!! Get it? Look at me, I'm in-SULTAN him! Aren't
we through yet, sultan snake boy?

JAFAR
Guards, lock up Jasmine and her friends and anyone who dares get in your way!

(The guards lead Jasmine away, there is a struggle between her and the guards as she demands that
they let her go)

JASMINE
Let me go! No!

JAFAR
You will obey Jasmine, or your father says goodbye to his head.

(Jasmine looks at the sultan, looks defeated, and walks with the guards)

JASMINE
Hakim!

(Everybody unfreezes)
JASMINE
You have served your kingdom with honor. You have protected my family with your life. I ask you to
Stand and fight. Stand with your true Sultan.

(Hakim appears flustered. But after a moment, his face looks clear with determination)

HAKIM
Set the Princess and the Sultan, free. I will only serve the one true Sultan.

JAFAR
(Evil laugh)
If you will not bow to a Sultan, then you will bow to a sorcerer. Genie, for my second wish, make me
the most powerful sorcerer on Earth!

IAGO
Most powerful sorcerer on Earth!

(GENIE grants his wish, and JAFAR uses his staff to force JASMINE to come to him)

JAFAR
How do you like your sultan now, Ms. I can break traditions & also be a sultan-princess!

ALADDIN
Leave her alone! (JAFAR uses his power to knock ALADDIN to the ground)

JAFAR
You stay out of this, street rat!

JASMINE
(going to ALADDIN) Street rat? But I thought you were Prince Ali.

ALADDIN
I meant to tell you sooner.

JAFAR
Prince Ali, yes it is he
But not as you know him
Read my lips and come to grips
With reality
Yes meet a blast from your past
Whose lies were too good to last
Say hello to your precious Prince Ali
(JASMINE runs to her father)

So Ali turns out to be merely Aladdin

(the GUARDS pull ALADDIN's hands over his head)

JAFAR
Ahhhh, yes! There's only one way to get rid of a street rat! (he moves to stand behind
ALADDIN, holds up his snake staff, and vanishes)

JASMINE
Where'd he go?

(a large snake JAFAR rises up downstage)

JAFAR
You're done for, now, street rat. Time to bid this world goodbye.

IAGO
Yes! Let them have it Boss!

JAFAR
He's no match for the most powerful sorcerer on the planet!

(ALADDIN escapes the GUARDS)

ALADDIN
The Genie has more power than you'll ever have!

GENIE
What are you doing?

ALADDIN
(to GENIE) Trust me! (to JAFAR) The Genie gave you your powers, he can take them away!

JAFAR
He's right. For my third and final wish, I want you to make me an all-powerful Genie!

GENIE
Way to go, Al! (grants the wish)

JAFAR
Yes! Yes! I can feel the power coursing through my veins! Aladdin, prepare to meet
your doom! (ALADDIN holds up the lamp, and JAFAR slowly sinks away) Wha… what's happening?
Aaaaaaaaaaaaagh!

(everything is returned to normal)

ALADDIN
You want to be a Genie? You got it. And everything that goes with it.

GENIE
Oh, Al, you're a GENIE-ous. Ten thousand years in the Cave of Wonders ought to do him a world of
good. Please stand clear of the doors. Jafar, you’ll be like a Med student failing more than 40 units!
Away and far from this place! (IAGO approaches)

ALADDIN
And know for the Angry Bird!

IAGO
Hey, All! you know! You know, I'm so glad you got rid of that Jafar person. All that negative energy!
Hey, Genie! Look at me! I'm a good guy now! Yeah! Yeah see I'm… I'm… a whoooooole new
biiiiiiiird!

GENIE
Two words! Ministop Chicken!
IAGO
Aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

ALADDIN
Jasmine, I’m sorry I lied to you about being a prince.

JASMINE
I know why you did.

ALADDIN
Well, I guess this is goodbye.

JASMINE
That stupid law. This isn’t fair. (beat) I love you.

GENIE
Al, no problem. You still got one wish left. Just say the word and you’re a Prince again.

ALADDIN
But Genie, what about your freedom?

GENIE
Hey, its only an eternity of servitude. But, this is love. Al, you’re not going to find another girl like her in
a million years. Believe me, I know. I’ve looked.

ALADDIN
Jasmin, I love you. But I got to stop pretending to be something I’m not.

JASMIN
I understand

ALADDIN
Genie, I wish for your freedom.

GENIE
One bonafide prince pedigree coming up. (beat) Ahhh… what?!)

ALADDIN
Genie, you’re free.

(Genie’s chains is taken off. He gets very excited.)

GENIE
Free at last! Come on ya’ll. Im off to see the world. But first… I'm goin' to Melos! Carpet and friends…
(CARPET and GENIE exit stage left)

ALADDIN
Genie, I’m going to miss you.

GENIE
Me too Al. And no matter what anybody says, you’ll always be a prince to me.

SULTAN
That’s right! You’ve certainly proven your worth as far as I’m concerned. Its that law, that’s the
problem.

JASMINE
Father?
SULTAN
Am I Sultan or am I Sultan? From this day forth, the princess shall marry whoever she deems worthy.

GENIE
So it goes short and sweet
now they live down the street,
doing just what they all do best.
Laws get changed just in time,
