CHAPTER 1
I. INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Study
The researchers are creating an air freshener that has no ChloroFluoroCarbons that air
fresheners usually contain this days, that is why the researchers are using Lemon zest and Ylang-
ylang as the substitute for the present air freshener products. Based on study the health benefits
of lemon scent can be attributed to its stimulating, calming, astringent, detoxifying, antiseptic,
disinfectant and anti-fungal properties. Creating this research in order to eliminate the use of
ChloroFluoroCarbons that a person may inhale through an air freshener.
The word zest would emerge in the 17th century as a term indicating citrus peel used for
flavoring. The origin lies in the French word "zeste". Using this Lemon zest as a part of our product
is perfect, says Beverley Hawkins the scent of a lemon could help people feel better about their
body image, people feel thinner and lighter when they experienced the scent of a lemon. It was
reviewed by Richard N. Fogoros that Ylang-ylang oil is used in aromatherapy and is believed to
be effective in treating depression, high blood pressure, and anxiety. Many phytochemical
studies have identified the constituents present in the essential oils of Ylang-ylang. Fighting odors
with earthly-odors and organic air fresheners are safe for people and pets, and it's healthier for
the planet too.
B. Statement of the Problem
The main objective of the researchers is to create a new kind of air freshener using ylang-
ylang extract and to know whether this air freshener will be effective to its vicinity.
This research aims to produce an effective and eco-friendly yet cheaper out of Ylang-ylang
extract and lemon zest extract. Specifically, this tries to answer the following queries:
1.) What is in the extract of the lemon zest and ylang-ylang flower extract that makes it possible
to produce an air freshener?
2.) Will ylang-ylang flower extract and lemon zest extract comparable to one sold in the market
in terms of the following:
a. Will it be effective?
b. Will its odor be favorable?
C. Hypothesis
The researchers are attempting to create an airfreshener that will be eco-friendly,
effective, and affordable. Researchers will examine if what they're making will work the way they
wanted.
● If will the components of the material were using will have a favorable effect?
● If the researchers air freshener can be used anywhere?
● If the scent of the air freshener will last long?
● Will it really be eco-friendly?
This hypothesis is an alternative hypothesis because it makes a statement that suggests or
advises a potential result or an outcome that the researcher expect.
D. Significance of the Study
The importance of this study is to know whether this air freshener will be effective to its
surrounding and to insure that it will work. It is important to know the limited area where the
fragrant is present and to know the limited time when the fragrant will last. This study aims to
know the effects of this air freshener to the consumers who will use this products.
This research is beneficial to consumers who will use this product because it can improve
the bad odor in cars, houses just like in the bathrooms, bedrooms, and living rooms. Consumers
feel thinner and lighter when they experienced the scent of a lemon. It was reviewed by Richard
N. Fogoros that Ylang-ylang extract is used in aromatherapy and it is believed to be effective in
treating depression, high blood pressure, and anxiety. Many phytochemical studies have
identified the constituents present in the essential extract of ylang-ylang. It can also beneficial to
researchers because it will be a great experience. Researchers also explore new things about this
study and aim to produce an effective and eco-friendly yet cheaper out of ylang-ylang flower
extract and lemon zest extract.
E. Scope and Delimitation
This study is conducted to produce a different kind of air freshener where ylang-ylang
extract is used. Based on a popular blog new directions aromatics ylang ylang's oils is known to
soothe feelings of stress, anxiety, sadness, tension and sleeplessness. It also said that its pleasant
floral scent, which has been described as both delicate and powerful, makes it an ideal ingredient
for well as in aromatherapy applications. At the same time it is mixed with lemon zest. And
according to an article written by Kathryn Watson, lemon zest produces an aroma that can help
breathe easier and help boost your mood and it is even safe for pregnant women.
Research limits to the field of aromatic products, enable to make an air freshener that do
not just have unique quality but also have an essential benefits like easing tension of the person
that can smell it. Such products are used to make sure that the components being inhaled is non-
toxic and natural. While the experiment is still on process the researchers aim to test how far the
odor will cover and also how long will it last. The study is expected to be done within 2 - 3 months.
Since the ingredients needed is abundant here in our country it will not be hard to find it.
