Secret Naturist
People Don't Understand I'm A Naturist Underneath These Clothes.. Are You Out Of The
Naturist Cabinet?
Secret Naturist - If you're a nudist or tried out naturism, does everyone in your life
understand? All of your friends, family, perhaps coworkers? Or Friday comes, you leave for
the playa, and strip out of your textile-identity costume like Superman in a phone booth.
Except you're fully nude and likely even more yourself in essence than you were before.
So who can you tell? Or who CAN you tell about your naturist lifestyle? Sometimes My Stay
at Terra Cotta Inn, A Clothing Optional Resort in Palm Springs to foresee reactions. In my
event, I've really spent most of my life being secretive about that small subculture of mine.
While the girls were a bit surprised and confused, mercifully our leader wasn't and
nonchalantly said something like, "Yeah some folks do like to go unclothed in the summer or
on the strand."
My most modest friend said she went into shock for 3 days. My Experience at Hippie Hollow
Park is it, I believed, many people are going to be freaked out about this, and I have to be
careful of telling anyone. In high school, I recognized that cautiousness was not so essential,
as I gained some very liberal and open minded pals who were surprised, but accepting and
inquisitive to know about it. The same occurred with faculty friends.
I was always secretive, though, only telling my closest friends. Granted, grade school and
high school are all about fitting in; you are not permitted to be different and nudist is definitely
classified as different. And yet, many folks young and old will still select to conceal this part of
their lives, not desiring coworkers or "textilists" to know, people who would believe it's odd,
wrong, upsetting, etc.
Secret Nudist
Many naturists keep their naked life a secret on account of the incredibly taboo nature of
nudity in this nation. Nakedness is connected with those feelings of disgust, embarrassment,
shame, lust and immorality. In general, any infringement of the taboo will be rejected by our
society.
An article, "Facing the public nudity taboo" by Anthony Layng, originally printed in USA
Today, explains in detail the reasons and rules of this bare taboo, where it comes from in
history, and how it compares to other nations and societies. He touches on its origins in
American Puritanism, the Victorian era, and Christian fundamentalism. He says, "By
connecting unclothed bodies with sex and immorality, public nudity is considered obscene"(p.
1).
He points out the specific body parts we decide to cover and when are cultural norms, like a
girl covering her breasts while breastfeeding. Americans' aversion to public nudity contrasts
deeply with many countries in Europe, Africa, and beyond, where bare sunbathing and public
breastfeeding are commonplace and normal.
Meanwhile, anybody who has tried it knows that naturism only means we appreciate being
outside in nature, being entirely ourselves, and loving it with other people who accept us as
we accept them.
The author of the article also says, "Although many well-informed Americans consider our
public nudity taboo to be anachronistic, there presently is no organized national effort to
challenge it, and I do not expect any sort of social movement devoted to the demise.
We do not have to hold on to these puritan attitudes and taboos that condemn our choosing
to go naked. So why not speed up our progress by telling more folks in our lives about our
love of nudism?
It is still crucial to be careful about telling others (like your manager). But if you want to drive
the naturist movement on, folks should meet nudists to understand they are available, to ask
questions, and to learn naturists are normal, great people. We shouldn't have to conceal it as
if it's wrong and forbidden. It's just nudity, so go out and tell folks you're a naturist! You might
face some negative reactions as you talk about going freely nude in a country of individuals
brought around feel repulsed or embarrassed by public nudity.
Yet you might be surprised, also; whoever you tell could turn into your newest bare-beach-
best-friend by next summer. Or that buddy who mysteriously quits calling you..(Eh, who
wants'em?) Now let's make ominously forewarning me, grabbed me on the way home from
school to snitch a where naturists do not have to hide their love of going nude!
