extended period of time, contact Quantum customer

Identifying an Array/ It may be necessary to remove a hard drive sled in a non-critical fault
Expansion Module Hard (NCF) status as a preventative action and not as a failed hard drive.
Drive in a Non-Critical A drive that posts an Impending Drive Failure error (reported by Self-
Fault (NCF) Status Monitoring, Analysis, Reporting Technology, or SMART) will NOT turn
on the Drive Service Action LED until the failing threshold is crossed.
There are two ways to determine if a hard drive has an impending drive
failure:
• Identify an Impending Drive Failure - Command Line
• Identify an Impending Drive Failure - Santricity
Serial port
Failing a Non-Critical A drive in Non-Critical Fault (NCF) or Optimal status must be put into a
Fault (NCF) or Optimal failed state before removal.
Hard Drive • Failing a Drive - Command Line
• Failing a Drive - Santricity
The Confirm Fail Drive dialog box opens (see Figure 244).
Removing the Array/ To remove hard drive sled from a DXi8500 Array module (RBOD) or
Expansion Module Hard Expansion module (EBOD):
Drive
WARNING: DO NOT replace a drive until determining its status. A
drive with an impending failure or in optimal status needs
to be put into a failed state before removal. Failure to do
this may cause issues with the DXi8500 system (see
Failing a Non-Critical Fault (NCF) or Optimal Hard Drive on
page 400).
2 Ensure that the drive rebuild from the Failed hard drive to the Hot
Spare has completed. If you are looking at the array, you will notice
the flashing LED between the Failed hard drive and the Hot Spare
has stopped.
On the remote management console, go to the Status > Hardware
> Details > Common > Storage Arrays > Qarray# > Drives page
(see Figure 232) and it will show the Hot Spare as a HotSpare.
3 Press the release button, lift the hard drive handle, and remove the
failed hard drive sled (see Figure 246 and Figure 247).

4 Wait 5 minutes for the system to recognize that the drive has been
removed. On the GUI, the Status > Hardware > Details >
Common > Storage Arrays > Qarray# > Drives page (see
Figure 232) will show the Failed drive as Missing. Check the
DXi8500 GUI to see if a service ticket has been received detecting
the drive as removed.
Installing a To install the replacement hard drive in a DXi8500 Array module (RBOD)
Replacement Array/ or Expansion module (EBOD):

Drive Caution: When installing a hard drive, ensure that the adjacent
drives are fully installed. Inserting a hard-drive carrier and
attempting to lock its handle next to a partially installed
carrier can damage the partially installed carrier's shield
spring and make it unusable.
1 With the latch fully extended, slide the new drive into the empty slot
until it stops.
2 Push down on the hard drive latch to fully secure the drive.
As the drive spins up, the drive Fault light might blink intermittently.
A blinking Active light indicates that data is being restored to the
new drive.
3 Based on the status of the drive Active and drive Fault lights,
choose one of the following actions:
• The drive Active light is on and the drive Fault light is off – the
hard drive sled replacement is successful.
• The drive Active light is off – The hard drive sled might be
installed incorrectly. Remove the sled, wait 5 minutes, and then
reinstall it.
• The drive Fault light is on – The new drive might be defective or
might be running with unsupported firmware. Replace the drive
with a new hard drive sled.
4 Ensure that the LEDs on the RAID/storage controllers are green. If
the Service Action LEDs are still lit, contact Quantum customer
support.
Note: If the Drive Active LED is blinking rapidly for both the
replaced drive and drive in drive sled/slot 1, a copyback
operation from the hot spare to the replacement drive has
started.
5 Run the Factory Detect Hardware script from the service menu.
Replacing a Global Hot The procedure for replacing a failed global hot spare drive is different
Spare Drive from replacing a normal hard drive that is part of a RAID set.
• 1TB and 2TB Systems - The global hot spares are always located in
the far left slots when viewing the array from the front (see Figure
248).
• 3TB Systems - The global hot spares are always located in all slots
of the top row and the far left slot of the middle row when viewing
the array from the front (see Figure 249).
2 Press the Release button, lift the hard drive handle, and remove the
global hot spare drive sled (see Figure 250).
Release button
Release button
3 Wait at least 60 seconds for the system to recognize that the drive
has been removed. To verify that the drive has been recognized as
removed, access the DXi8500 GUI and check to see if a service ticket
has been received detecting the drive as removed.
4 With the latch fully extended, slide the new drive into the empty slot
until it stops.
5 Push down on the hard drive latch to fully secure the drive.
The drive will spin up with the drive Active light on and the drive
Fault light off. The global hot spare has been detected as a Good
drive, but was not assigned to the RAID set.
This appears as though the hard drive sled replacement is
successful, HOWEVER, you must complete the CLI command in
Bringing the Array to an Optimal Status on page 412 to assign the
global hot spare to the RAID set and bring the array to an optimal
state.
Running Factory Detect After you have replaced the Array/Expansion module hard drive, you
Hardware must run the Factory Detect Hardware script from the service menu.
Before running Factory Detect Hardware make sure the New drive is
rebuilding from the Hot Spare and has been running for 5 minutes. If
looking at the array you will notice the flashing LED between the New
drive and Hot Spare is flashing.
On the GUI, the Status > Hardware > Details > Common > Storage
Arrays > Qarray# > Drives page will show the Hot Spare as HotSpare
Copyback. This adds the hardware serial numbers to the system
configuration. Refer to Factory Detect Hardware on page 81 for more
information.
The Array/Expansion Module hard drive sled replacement procedure is
complete.
