Introduction
This report provides and overview of a System Center component (System Center Data
Protection Manager). Companies today need a business continuity and disaster recovery
strategy (BCDR) that enables the availability of resources during planned and unplanned
outages. System Center Data Protection Manager is an enterprise backup and recovery
system provided by Microsoft and assists in the backup strategy of companies by
facilitating the backup and availability of enterprise critical data.
System Center DPM can be deployed for the backup of various types of data including;
Application aware backup, File backup, system backup, Hyper-V backup etc.
DPM is able to store backed up data to various medias such as: disk, Azure backup, and
tape.

The figure below shows the application of a DPM server in managing an enterprise
backup strategy.
