Geometers Sketchpad Lesson Plan

This lesson plan teaches 5th grade students about slope and graphing lines on a coordinate plane. Students will use Geometer's sketchpad to graph points and identify slope and y-intercept from equations. The teacher will introduce slope using an example of skiing. Students will then practice graphing lines independently using the software while the teacher monitors and helps struggling students. To assess understanding, students will complete a Geometer's sketchpad activity and be tested on chapter material.

Lesson Title:_Sliding down the SLOPES_______________________________ Grade:_5______

Learning Target/Student learning outcome:
The students will be able to graph points (ordered pairs) on a coordinate plane. Students will be able to identify
the slope and y-intercept given an equation in slope intercept form. The students will also be able to graph the
line given an equation in y=mx+b. Students will make predictions about how different slopes are related.

Students’ Needs:
Students will need to have a little bit of prior knowledge regarding slope and graphing points. Students will
draw upon previous knowledge to complete this lesson.

Materials:

Students: pencil, paper, computer

Language Function:
The students will achieve a deeper level of thinking through the explanation and justification of their answers
through visualization and the use of Geometer’s sketchpad. They can analyze and interpret graphs and slopes
using this tool.

Lesson Plan
Before:
The teacher will start the lesson with questions such as, “Has anyone ever been skiing or snowboarding before?
Anyone been sledding before?” By starting off with questions like this, it will spark students’ interest and grab
their attention. It is a great way to introduce the topic of slope. The teacher will then model on the board how to
graph points on a coordinate plane and find the slope of the line. With an example up on the board, the students
will investigate and see that the slope is just the rise over the run.

During:
Throughout most of the lesson, students will be participating in the Geometer’s sketchpad activity. While
students are working independently at their seats, the teacher will walk around the classroom to monitor
progress. If a student seems to be struggling, the teacher will work one on one with them.
After:
At the end of the lesson, the teacher will reinforce the main objectives of the lesson making sure that the students
fully understand what slope and y-intercept are and how to graph and equation given in y=mx+b form. The
students will engage in a think-pair-share exercise discussing their three key takeaways from the lesson.
