TASK-1
Date:

Objective: Introduction to ASPEN PLUS v10

Introduction:

ASPEN PLUS™ is a software package designed to allow a user to build a process model and
then simulate the model without tedious calculations.

ASPEN is an acronym of Advanced System for Process engineering. The sophisticated Aspen
software tool can simulate large processes with a high degree of accuracy. It has a model library
that includes mixers, splitters, phase separators, heat exchangers, distillation columns, reactors,
pressure changers, manipulators, etc. By interconnecting several unit operations, we are able
to develop a process low diagram (PFD) for a complete plant.

Thus, simulation of an entire chemical process, starting from the raw material to the final
finished product, is symbolically represented by different icons where each icon stands for a
unit operation, chemical process, input/output material stream, input/output energy stream, or
input/output electric/pneumatic signal. In terms of Aspen Plus flowsheet notation, there will be
a block icon and stream icon. The iconic flowsheet simulator, such as Aspen Plus, allows us to
predict the behaviour of a process using basic engineering relationships.

Follow these instructions to open ASPEN PLUSTM:

1. Click the Start button in the lower left of the screen and select All Programs
2. Put your cursor over Engineering Applications then Aspen Tech and then Aspen
Engineering Suite
3. Move the cursor over Aspen Plus v10 and click on Aspen Plus User Interface. ASPEN
PLUS™ will open and a window installer window will also open. If the installer asks
you to specify the location of a file, click on Cancel and then again on Cancel in the
Windows installer window.
4. Once ASPEN PLUS™ opens, you have to choose between using a template or a blank
flowsheet. Check the Blank box and select ok.
5. A new file is opened, where we can use Property Estimation and Simulation Package
which give Process Simulation by making Flowsheet.
