Baharanan

HISTORY OF KITE FLYING
• There are no. of stories about history of kite
flying.
• Peoples have different ideas about kite
flying and its celebrations
STORY NO. 1
There was once a Raja called
Basant who ruled over the ancient
land of Indus. One year there was
drought, so he cancelled all the
taxes on his people and his people,
thereafter, celebrated ‘Basant
Panchmi’ every year at the arrival
of Spring.
STORY 2
• Basant itself is a north-Punjab celebration of
Spring. The Basant festival was the a five day
festival celebrated by local farmers during the
Magh month [Jan-Feb] when the fields are
awash in mustard-seed flowers and consisted of
people dressing in mustard-color clothes and
having a good time. This festival can be traced at
least since the mid thirteenth century.
During Mughal period
• By the Mughal period, Basant was a popular
festival at the major Sufi shrines.
• A typical celebration during the Mughal period
would entail the devotees of the Sufi traveling
to the shrine on Basant clad in yellow to offer
garlands of yellow flowers and sing qawwalis
all night long.
• Khusrau, the famous sufi-poet of the thirteenth
century, even composed verses on Basant:

• Chinese use kites in nearly 200 BC for the
purpose of signaling and for sending
messages over a medium distance
• Slowly it spread to other countries and they
take it as recreational activity.

came from abroad and from out of city
come to lahore to enjoy this festival of
colors

• All the family members gather at one single
place, mostly on the rooftops, and celebrate
this festival.

Musical programs featuring various
bands and solo singers would be held
on daily basis. A snake house has
been added for the first time to attract
the people. Prominent feature of the
festival were the eight stalls installed
by women and social workers
