Folk Song

The student planted a piece of ginger that grew into a banana tree bearing mangoes. When picked, it revealed a ripe papaya. As it fell to the ground, a beautiful maiden appeared. The same occurred when the student planted another piece of ginger - it became a taro plant with mangoes, and upon picking a ripe papaya, a beautiful maiden fell to the ground.

Ako’y Nagtanim Kapirasong Luya
Ako'y nagtanim ng kapirasong luya,
I planted a piece of ginger.

Tumubo ay saging, namunga ng mangga.

It grew as a banana, fruited a mango.

Nang aking pitasin, hinog na papaya.

When I picked it, a ripe papaya.

Bumagsak sa lupa, magandang dalaga.

Fell on the ground, a beautiful lass.

Ako ay nagtanim, kapirasong luya.

I planted a piece of ginger.

Sumibol ay gabi, namunga ng mangga.

Sprouted as a taro plant, fruited a mango.

Nang pipitasin ko, hinog na papaya.

When I was to pick it, a ripe papaya.

Lumagpak sa lupa, magandang dalaga.

Fell on the ground, a beautiful lass.
