2 ELCAD 7.3.1
The E-CAE software package ELCAD from AUCOTEC has been in use at SIEMENS since 1987 and became
mainline at Siemens PTD in the year 1996.
According to the corporate guideline for PTD, version 7 provides numerous new and expanded functions to
support user and project engineers even more efficiently in project planning.

2.1 Features of ELCAD 7.x

ELCAD is comprehensive: ELCAD covers the complete area of planning, from the concept phase to the
creation of all specific documents.
Redundancy-free data acquisition: All data has to be read or put in only once and is always available
whenever needed – even for other projects.
Freely configurable: ELCAD adjusts to your working methods or your company’s work routine, not vice versa.
Many tools libraries and special menus were customized especially for PTD H.
User interface: The ergonomic software design corresponds to the WindowsTM standard:
ƒ Uniform menu and user guidance in the MS-Office style
ƒ Modern operating elements (assistant functions, standard browsers)
Country-specific: By virtue of its standardised and technically up-to-date IEC environmental data, ELCAD
7.3.1 is oriented to international application. This comprises the implementation of a complete IEC symbol
library PTD 60617 (grid size 2mm) for the electrical documentation tasks.
Revision management: A property of the E-CAE software that is unique worldwide is the automatic, document-
oriented revision management. This is used to compare diagrams automatically. Thus, the current revision can be
aligned with the first revision even after many years. Moreover, it is possible to carry out "zero revisions" as well
as to manage current diagrams and documents separately. Functions that enable machine and plant construction
engineers to support their products throughout their life cycles.
Due to update procedures of elder projects and symbol libraries (form sheets) this revision management will be
rolled out at PTD first in the year 2005 and 2006.

2.2 Training Course Contents

For ELCAD, the central document is the circuit diagram. It contains the devices (item designations) that are
connected via connections (wires or cables conductors). Following graphic generation of the circuit diagram, it
must be edited. By means of editing, the symbols are assigned item names and technical properties. The
diagrams are evaluated only after editing. Following an evaluation run, additional documents such as terminal
diagrams, parts lists, wiring lists, cable lists etc. can be created automatically.

Schedule of the Training Course:

Graphic preparation of the circuit diagrams

Editing of the devices and connections, evaluation of the diagrams
Generation of derived diagrams (terminal diagram and list of drawings)
Symbol editing
Creating and archiving a project documentation.

During the course, a sample project will be created consisting of 6-pages circuit diagram. After editing and
evaluation of the drawings, the terminal diagrams will be created automatically by batch processing.
Subsequently the list of drawings and cabling lists (device parts list) are created and output.

3 Flying Licence Selection

FLSelect (Flying License Selection) helps you to start ELCAD and all modules which belong to ELCAD using a
Flying License Manager.

3.1.1 Features
The original idea of FLSelect was the selection of the needed special licenses using ELCAD
with a License Manager. ELCAD itself has no real support for selecting different licenses.
In the course of time features like Project Selection or a dynamic changing of the Start
Options was added.
A new function, which runs just in the background, updates the printer interfaces
automatically.

FLSelect can be used with ELCAD (Archive, ELCAD View) since Version 5.5.2.
3.1.2 License Selection
Using ELCAD, a hardware lock (Dongle) or a Flying License Manager is necessary.
Local License (Dongle)

In this case a hardware lock (Dongle) has to be put on the parallel port (LPT1) of the PC. The
File ELCAD_ID has to contain special ID- numbers, corresponding to the dongle. After
starting ELCAD, the modules, according to the ID- numbers, are available.
Flying License (Server/Client)

The Flying License is a Client/Server concept, which offers much more efficiency of the
existing ELCAD licenses in networks.

To use ELCAD with Flying License a Flying License Manager has to be installed on a server,
where all available ELCAD licenses are to be registered.

The Felics Agent, a client software, has to be installed on each workstation. Starting ELCAD
claims the needed licenses at the Flying License Manager. This means that, according to the
installed licenses, a finite number of users could work with the different modules.

The fact is, that changing the needed licenses is a quite difficult and the user has to know
which key has to be set.
To provide easy use of flying licenses this program was developed.
3.1.3 Project Selection
Normally when you start ELCAD the project, which you have used the last time, will be
opened automatically. The Project Selection gives you the possibility to select a different
project that will be opened at starting ELCAD.
You are able to configure up to five different paths, where you can select ELCAD- projects
from.

Specific Toolbar: This Toolbar gives you an efficient way to use PTD symbol libraries (PTD60617, H2_60617)
without knowing specific symbol names. If you ever want to hide this bar you’ll have to use the commands TB
UNLOAD (toolbar invisible) and TB LOAD (name) to recall this toolbar.

To load the specific toolbar for drawing editing: write TB LOAD (tb_pro.bar) in command line

Status bar: Displays information on the program status. If e.g. a drawing command has been called, the action
next expected is shown, like the X or Y co-ordinate of the cross-hair pointer, the angle of the symbol measured
from the standard orientation, the grid setting etc.

4.1.2 Working Areas in ELCAD

ELCAD is divided into several working areas, so-called Views, in order to display data of functionally
connected working areas as distinctly as possible.

The working areas:

Drawing Editing: Creating and editing projects and drawings.
PM&CT Design: Planning of process engineering plants
Cable Planning: Creating and editing cable data.
Lists: Creating and editing parts lists, ordering lists, terminal lists, cable lists etc.
Input/output Components: Data exchange with PLC systems.
Working area Symbol Design: Creating and editing symbols.
Working area Master Data: Entering and changing material master data
Translate: Defining translate texts

You find the listed functions under the menu option "View".
With the buttons in the toolbar you can activate the views directly.

The menu items offered by the menus depend on the working area displayed. In the project and
drawing editing working area they are dependent on whether or not a drawing is open.

4.2 Working on a project

A project as defined in ELCAD is comparable to an assortment of all documents in a document file. It
encompasses drawings, diagrams, lists and the pertinent databases for the evaluation. Drawings can only be
created within an open project.
A project is created at the beginning of a new planning job. In this context a new directory is created on your
hard disk where the data for this project is stored. You can define the path and the name of the directory freely.
You can create a project with or without a template:

It is advisable to establish a master project that fits your individual needs. You can then load this
project as a template for any subsequent project. Thereby you save time and ensure that your projects are
always based on the same settings.

Creation with template

With template means that the project settings (access to master data, settings of the symbol file etc.) and
structures (databases, tables etc.) are taken from a template project. You can even take your one template
projects. A standard template project delivered by PTD OI is “PTD_Template.PRO”.

can be defined user-related

Opens the standard

Windows file selection

The project title may comprise maximally 32 characters and must not contain a full stop (period). The file
extension for a project is "PRO". This is automatically attached to the project title.

Creation without template

Without template means that a standard structure with the necessary basic settings is created.

In this case you must define important settings such as symbol files yourself.

You open a project in order to edit drawings, lists, tables or directories contained in this project. After starting
ELCAD, the project last edited is automatically opened.

When opening a project created with an earlier version of ELCAD, you are asked whether the project
is to be adjusted to the current version. If this is acknowledged, the project cannot be opened any more with
previous program versions.
Closing a project: A project is automatically closed (and saved) when you exit ELCAD or open another project.
Save project as: The working status of a project is automatically saved if you change the work area (drawing
editing, PM&CT planning, cable planning etc) or exit ELCAD. You copy a project if you:
ƒ wish to create a new project and want to copy not only the structure of an existing project ("Create project
with template") but also the data
ƒ wish to save a project on a backup medium.

You achieve a complete backup of the project including symbol and translate files by using the function
"ARCHIVE".

Deleting a project

Never delete a project that has not yet been saved on a backup medium. The data is irrevocably lost.
When projects are deleted, the project directory (project name.pro) and all subdirectories and the files
contained therein are deleted from the hard disk.

4.2.1 Project header data

Project header data contain the general information for describing a project. This information can be used
arbitrarily anywhere in the project, e.g. in text fields of forms. They can be entered at one central location for the
entire project.

The project header texts are accepted from the template project.
Input and change of the project header data is done in the menu FILE under the menu item PROPERTIES.

Adaptation of the mask (the texts on the left) is done in the project settings.

4.2.2 Settings
You call the dialog "Settings" via the menu EXTRAS and the menu item OPTIONS; no graphic may be open at
this point.
Settings (or configurations) may be user-related or project-related.

The delivered data contain basic settings that permit a first round of working with the system.

Project settings
These settings are defined for the current project and are part of the project as the file PROJECT.INI.

When creating a project, the system performs basic settings, which can however be expanded or changed via the
menu items.
If a project is created with a template, the settings of the template project are adopted.

Project settings always override user settings!

5 Drawing editing
The drawing editing forms the core of the project editing in ELCAD.

The term drawing comprises all graphic documents for describing a project such as circuit diagrams, layout
diagrams and terminal diagrams.
In this section we describe the basic functions of drawing creation and management, You will learn how to
create a drawing and how to use drawing functions.

Drawing content
Drawing name

Form

The name of the drawing is formed from the directories under the entry "Drawings" in the object tree. It may
consist of a maximum of 4 directories (directory with subdirectories) and the sheet number. In the above
example the name of the drawing is: = / S / D / 1
Forms are drawing frames that contain logical in addition to graphic information, e.g. for the item management
and the revision management. There are various forms for the generation of different diagrams and lists. Forms
are pre-set in the settings for the project.
Drawing contents are graphic elements, evaluable and non-evaluable symbols and connections.

5.1 Drawings in the Object Tree

The object tree is an operating element for managing drawings. In design and function it resembles the
WINDOWS Explorer. In drawing editing there are four object trees that can be selected via the tabs.

Graphic objects in ELCAD are all

managed in the directory
Drawings.

There are object trees for drawings, the item designation editor, symbols and macros.

5.2 Creating Objects

The following points should be heeded when creating drawing objects.
• There are up to 5 naming levels available, four directories and one drawing number.
• The designation of the last level should be the sheet number because it is used for creating references.
• The designations of the directories should be adjusted to company requirements; for example
designations related to subassemblies or function groups could be used here.
• The objects in the object tree are usually displayed in alphabetical order.

After a new directory has been defined in the Drawings object tree, a drawing must be inserted while
the higher-level object tree directory is still open. Empty directories are automatically deleted during exiting.
The menu items of the context menu depend on the object tree element checked. If the root of the object tree is
checked, functions are offered that are valid for the entire project. If you check a directory, only functions valid
for a directory are offered.

5.3 Editing a drawing object

Open To open an object, double-click on it. If you click on a drawing object, it is displayed in the
graphic window. If you click on a symbol object, the symbol is attached to the cross-hair
pointer and can be placed on the drawing.
Close The active drawing is automatically saved and closed if you exit the drawing editing or open
another drawing. By means of the menu EDIT and the menu item DRAWING / CLOSE the
drawing editing is terminated, and the menus for project editing are activated.
Save A drawing is automatically saved and closed if you exit the drawing editing or open another
drawing.
Delete After the Delete the drawing is irrevocably lost. Drawings can be deleted only individually in
the object tree.

5.4.1 Placing Graphic Elements

Graphic elements are lines, rectangles, circles and ellipses that in contrast to symbols do
not possess logic, i.e. cannot be evaluated. You use them when creating new symbols or
free graphics.

Graphic elements are called via the menu INSERT, menu item GRAPHIC
ELEMENTS, or a command in the command line.

This list contains all graphic elements in ELCAD. In the following, the procedure
for using graphic elements will be explained by means of a "Line" and a "Text".

5.4.2 Placing Texts

You can position free texts on a drawing. These are graphic elements.
Single text: with the menu INSERT / TEXT

In drawing editing, only the field Fixed Text can be used.

Slope: The text is displayed vertically or tilted 15°.
Reference point: This is the writing direction of the text, can be right, left or centre.
The block reference is set if texts occupy several lines.
Several lines of text can be represented by #, the character # effects a line break.
In order to represent texts rotated by 90°, 180° or 270°, the W key must be pressed. If a text is to be displayed at
an arbitrary angle, the keys Ctrl+W must be used.
Text size: Up to 6 text sizes can be used. The user can define two additional text sizes.
Text field: with the menu INSERT / TEXT FIELDS. Usually several lines of text entered via the ELCAD text
editor. Following input, each line is placed on the drawing as single-line text. You can use text fields if e.g. text
from the WINDOWS clipboard is to be inserted into drawings. With the ELCAD text editor texts with a length
of up to 80 characters can be created.

Special Characters

Apart from the English character set, a Greek and a Cyrillic character set can be loaded. The changeover is
executed by prefixing a "\" character with a number.
\0 = English character set
\1 = Greek character set (subscripted numbers)
\2 = Cyrillic character set (superscripted numbers)
Subsequently the character corresponding to the English character set must be entered (e.g. "\1W" yields "Ω").

All subscripted numbers are assigned to the Greek character set, all superscripted numbers to the
Cyrillic character set (example: "m\22" yields "m²"; "H\12\0O" yields "H2O").

Keyboard layout of the character sets

From top to bottom: character sets /0 (English), /1 (Greek, subscripted), /2 (Cyrillic, superscripted)

If special characters such as "#", "?", "\" or "*" are to be represented as text, these characters must be prefixed
by "\".

6 Creating a Circuit Diagram

You create a circuit diagram by placing appropriate symbols from a symbol library on the drawing and
connecting them with one another. You then assign the symbols unambiguous item identifiers (the symbol
becomes a device) as well as a part number from the device master database. Together with the part number, the
device-specific data like manufacturer, order number, price etc. is transmitted. You then evaluate the finished
circuit diagram. In doing this, you write the information concerning the drawing into the project database.

In ELCAD, the circuit diagram is the central document that contains all of the important information. It forms
the basis for the creation of derived documents such as terminal diagram and parts list.
After evaluation there is an online connection between the drawing and the project database; this means that
following a change in the drawing (e.g. shifting a potential to a different circuit path) the project database is
automatically updated.

6.1 Creating a Circuit Diagram

There is no online
connection between the
project database and the
derived documents, i.e.
following changes in the
drawing the derived
document must be created
anew.

The creation of a circuit diagram is carried out according to the same rules as the creation of a drawing.

6.1.1 Editing Forms

When a drawing is created, it is assigned the form entered in the (project or user) settings.
You can change these entries via the menu EDIT - FORM - CHANGE.

Changing the entries in

the form

Entries input here in the fields Higher Level Designation, FUNCTION and LOCATION are transmitted to the
symbols placed on this page.

6.2 Symbols
The entire control of the information in ELCAD is done via the logic of the symbols.
The term symbol encompasses:
ƒ Graphic symbols consisting of graphic and logic, like indicator lamps, potentials, connector symbols, relays,
terminals or complete PLC input and output cards respectively.
ƒ Forms and drawing templates respectively for circuit diagrams, terminal diagrams, parts lists, layout
diagrams, tables of content etc.
ƒ Graphic symbols without logic like e.g. layout symbols, company logos, cable and core symbols.
Symbols are combined in symbol libraries. The symbol library you use with this program version is called
"PTD60617" or “H2_60617”.
Each symbol is stored there under a name and can be inserted into the drawings using this name. The symbols
are listed alphabetically. The symbols in the symbol library have been named according to the rules given by the
DIN and IEC and subdivided into groups (classification).

6.2.1 Inserting Symbols into a Drawing

There are various methods for inserting symbols into a drawing:
ƒ Call via the object tree "Symbols"
ƒ Call via the toolbar
ƒ Call via the command line
ƒ Call via the menu INSERT and the menu item SYMBOL.

The symbol is always called into the drawing by means of its name.

After activation in the toolbar you can select the

symbol from the symbol list (symbol display)

6.2.2 Moving and Copying

Subsequent moving or copying of a symbol can e.g. be done with the right mouse button.
It is also possible to move or copy one or several objects with EDIT / OBJECTS.
For symbols there is the special command "Move Symbol". This command can cut symbols out of connections
or move to another connection.

For copying the same symbol consecutively (e.g. terminals) the command KL (Copy Last) can be used
after the first symbol has been set.

6.2.3 Testing Symbols

Symbol components
Following placement, only the graphic of a symbol is displayed. The following list explains the components of a
symbol that can be viewed only in the test mode (menu EXTRAS / TEST DRAWING / ...).

Display of connectors,
collecting frame and
reference point

Reference point: Each symbol is assigned a reference point during its creation in symbol design. This point is
used to align the symbol; this means that the centre of the cross-hair pointer forms the reference point during
placement. In the normal view, the reference points are invisible. Only upon activating the menu item TEST
DRAWING / SYMBOLS / REFERENCE POINT in the menu EXTRAS or with the command "test symbol",
they are represented by crosses.
Connectors: Electrical connectors are likewise invisible the normal view. They are made visible via the menu
EXTRAS, menu item TEST DRAWING / CONNECTORS, or the command "test ans".
Frame: Each symbol is enclosed by a rectangular frame. It encloses the area taken up by the symbol with all of
its inscriptions. If the frame is visible, it suffices to specify a point within the frame to "grab" the symbol. Frames
are made visible via the menu EXTRAS, menu item TEST DRAWING / SYMBOLS / COLLECTING FRAME
or the command "test frame".

Joining Connectors

The function call for drawing connections is effected via the toolbar or by entering the command "C"
The predefined function creates a connection between device connectors. The start/end point of a connection
must be a device connector.

Other connection endings

Syntax:
C[starting point-default][endpoint-default]
The "C" stands for the command "Connection". Admissible defaults:
"" A space stands for a connector at a symbol or at an existing connection.
"." A dot stands for an open end.
"P" A "P" stands for an ending with a dot (•).
"-" A minus sign stands for a constrained wiring.
"+" A plus sign stands for a constrained wiring.

The digitising parameters for altering the line type and the line widths are used as for the drawing of
graphic lines, e.g. via the right mouse button.

6.4 Editing symbols

Editing symbols means assigning information needed for the evaluation of the drawings.
ƒ By editing in the circuit diagram, symbols become items; they are assigned an unambiguous item
designation. The items can be specified by assigning them a part number from a device master database.
ƒ With the subsequent evaluation, the item designations assigned are checked and entered in the project
database.
ƒ The information in the project database is required for the derived documents (parts list, wiring list, terminal
diagram, layout diagram).

6.4.1 Calling Editing Dialogs

There are various possibilities to activate the editing dialogs:
• Menu EDIT / OBJECTS/ EDIT
• Or a symbol in the toolbar
• Right mouse button single, Editing with transfer, Editing with transfer and increment

Editing with transfer is used where the same text must be written at [multiple] symbols, such as the inscription
of a terminal strip.

Reference points of the

symbols must be in the
range drawn with right
mouse button

Subsequently you determine which specifications of the first symbol are to be transferred to all of the others.

For Editing with transfer and increment there is an additional specification which parameter of the symbols is
to be incremented. This can e.g. be core designations.

6.4.2 Assigning Items

Items are defined as all of the objects used for creating, transmitting, distributing, storing, measuring, converting
or using energy and signals.
The designation of items is in accordance with IEC61346. There it is defined that an item designation is
subdivided into designation blocks and that the blocks are delimited by defined signs.

System Functions Location Item Unambiguous

abbreviation group Identifier Designation
HL

Items with the designation =A1.F1+S1-M1

If a symbol is assigned an item designation, it becomes a device with an unambiguous name within the
project.
You can assign item designations in various ways:
You enter all blocks in the editing dialogs of the symbols
You define the plant and the location in the dialog of the form and enter only the device designation in the
editing dialog of the symbol. The designations defined in the writing field data are then valid for all symbols
of the drawing.
You use so-called window symbols that combine symbols and assign them a common location, function or
plant identification.
To find out how an item name is composed, you can use the identification function via the right mouse button or
the
command
+S2
The location designation was

6.4.3 Assigning Master Data

If the editing dialog of a symbol contains the input field "Part Number", you can supplement the symbol
information with device-specific data from the device master database (e.g. "Part Number", "Manufacturer",
"Type", "Order Number", "Price" and other technical data).

Using the [...] function in the editing mask, you can access the parts master data via a search key. The selected
search key must be filled out completely. The data are in part imported into the editing mask of the symbol.
The device master database must be defined in the project settings!
Technical data can be represented on the drawing if this has been specified during symbol design.

Following data acquisition from the master database, the editing mask must be closed. Upon reopening,
all of the imported data are visible.

6.4.5 Moving Individual Symbol Texts

In drawing editing, the symbol texts defined in symbol design can be changed later on. Both the position and the
parameters of the texts can be changed.
For this purpose there are the menu items with the following functionality’s:

Move (VT1): A symbol text is selected with the graphic cursor. The position is changed with the cursor. The
angle is changed by pressing the keys [W] and [CTRL]+[W] respectively.
Properties (VT2): A symbol text is selected with the graphic cursor. The parameter mask of the text appears.
Here you can set font size, slope, reference point, block reference and visibility.
For composite text the visibility refers to all variable parts.
Symbol texts default (VT0): Resets the parameters of a symbol text to the values of the symbol design. A
symbol text is selected with the graphic cursor. The position, the angle, font size, slope, reference point, block
reference are reset to the original values.
The visibility of a symbol text cannot be influenced here.
All symbol texts default (VT3): Resets the parameters of all symbol texts to the values of the symbol design.
All texts of the symbol are reset to their original values. The visibility of a symbol text cannot be influenced
here.
Edit hidden texts: Enables editing texts specified as hidden. After selection of the function the symbol is
identified; subsequently the text to be edited can be selected.

6.4.9 Using Window Symbols

Window symbols improve the clarity of drawings by combining items on the basis of common properties. A
criterion can e.g. be a common location, a common function or plant identification.
There are also windows that can function as device windows. These carry a higher-level item designation, here
also called super item.
The window symbol is defined by a graphic line (command "lin") and a symbol placed on this line. The
specifications of the window are then valid for all symbols within the window line.

6.5 Evaluating a Circuit Diagram

6.5.1 Results of the Evaluation
With the evaluation, all items as well as conductors, cables and wires are incorporated, combined and written
into the evaluation databases. Resetting the evaluation cancels these results.
In particular, the following actions are executed:
• Entry of the items and checking for duplicate or multiple names for them
• Creating references between primary and secondary representation
• Creating references at potential symbols and connector symbols
• Transmission of connector and contact numbers
• Numbering of the terminals
• With cable management switched on: Creating a cable list
• If there is an appropriate assignment list, it is filled with the information from the symbols

After the evaluation there is an ONLINE connection between the device in the drawing and the project
database, i.e. the database is updated if the drawing is altered (e.g. by shifting a potential).

References between Main and Secondary Representation

The coherence of main (emergency shutdown relay) and secondary representation (contacts) is ensured by the
identical item name. The references are exchanged and the contact numbers are transferred. Simultaneously there
is a check whether the secondary representation (contacts) correspond to the main representation. The main
representation is entered into the evaluation database.

Potential references
The potential references are effected by means of the same name.
A potential name may occur any number of times.

References
between the
connector
[wire break]
symbols
Connector [wire
break] symbols
are used to
present a connection in separated form. Here the connector [wire break] symbols that separate one and the same
connection must have the same name. There are always only 2 connector [wire break] symbols with the same
name. After the command "Create Destinations" (terminal diagram), the destination devices are displayed at the
connector [wire break] symbols.
Evaluation of terminals
During the evaluation of terminals, the terminals of a strip are numbered consecutively. The terminal strip is
entered in the evaluation database.
Project-related settings for the evaluation of terminal strips can be entered under EXTRAS / OPTIONS.

6.5.2 Using the Item Editor

Following evaluation, the item editor can give important information on the items. It is called via the Item
Designation tab and represents all of the evaluated devices in an object tree. The devices are sorted according to
their plant, function and location identifications.
Double-click on a device opens the mask
that is also displayed with Identify.

Navigate switches to the respective

sheet and marks the device.
View sheet shows the sheet where the
selected representation is located.

The item editor can be used for renaming item designations. For this purpose click with the right mouse button
on the desired device and select the option Rename. If an item displayed in partitioned form is renamed, all of
the pertinent parts are renamed simultaneously. All devices on the drawing are then renamed.

This is especially important for devices displayed in partitioned form e.g. terminal strips and PLC
representations.

6.5.3 Identifying Symbols

Identification in the non-evaluated state yields the total item designation of the selected item.

After evaluation, information can also be obtained by identifying the item designations in the drawing. The
identification mask corresponds to the one called from the item editor. The total item designation is displayed.
The mask informs on the main and secondary representation of the devices displayed separately. By means of
this mask, the functions "Navigate" or "View Sheet" can be selected.

6.5.4 Navigating Symbols

With navigation you can track devices displayed in partitioned form once they have been evaluated.
Navigation is possible from the identification mask, via the command N (command line) or the menu item EDIT
/ OBJECTS / NAVIGATE.

Main and secondary representations

When navigating a secondary representation, there is a switchover to the sheet containing the main
representation.
If you navigate a main representation, the secondary representations are shown one by one.

Connector [wire break] symbols

Navigating a connector [wire break] symbol leads to a changeover to the sheet with the counterpart.

Potentials
When navigating potentials, all having the same name are displayed consecutively.

Terminals
Navigating a terminal results in the consecutive display of all terminals of this strip.

PLC Symbols (symbol type 12)

Navigating a PLC symbol of the same card displays all pertinent symbols one by one.

Window symbols (symbol types 10 and 11)

Window symbols that have an item designation and are displayed in partitioned form can likewise be found by
navigation.

8 Batch processing
Batch processing enables you to execute various actions for several drawing sheets consecutively. Thus you can
e.g. evaluate a batch of sheets, then create the terminal diagram and finally print all drawings.
You must always first define a batch, which is then executed.

8.1 Defining Batches

Create a new batch by placing right

mouse button on the Batch directory

Creating a batch
Following the selection of the menu item "New", an entry "New Batch" is created that can be renamed at once.
You can define several batches, e.g. one batch for Evaluation, one for Create Terminal Diagram and one for
Output.
Placing drawings on a batch
Once a batch has been created, you must position all drawings for which you want to execute an action on the
batch symbol, either by drag & drop or with the context menu (right mouse button).
Individual drawings: Drag the desired drawing in the object tree onto the new batch symbol.
All drawings of a directory: Drag the directory in the object tree onto the new batch symbol.
Several drawings selectively: Start by checking the first drawing in the object tree. Press and hold the [Ctrl]
key while clicking on additional drawings. Then drag the drawings onto the new batch symbol.
Several drawings in series: Start by checking the first drawing in the object tree. Press and hold the [Shift]
key while clicking on the last drawing. Then drag the drawings onto the new batch symbol.
Individual or several drawings via the context menu (right mouse button) with COPY and PASTE
[INSERT].
By double clicking on the batch entry, the mask shown below is displayed.

9.4.2 Influence of the Potentials

We distinguish between busbar potentials and wire potentials.
The short form of the designation B (Bar) stands for the bar potential. The short form of the designation W
(Wire) stands for the wire potential.
.

Busbar potentials
CD_POT_B2R

Destination of these Wire potentials

terminals in the terminal CD_POT_W1R
diagram is the bar PE

Excerpt from the terminal diagram: Internal destination of terminal 6 is the busbar.

By exchange of the potential (PE) into a wire potential there are different destinations for terminal 6 in the
terminal diagram, [i.e.] the next connected device. Moreover, now also terminals 5 and 6 are connected via a
jumper.

In order to have the destinations (potentials as destinations, +C1PE ) correctly displayed in the terminal
diagram, the switch AUTOMATIC / SPECIAL CHARACTERS should be set in the project settings.

The terminal diagram gives information concerning:

• the strip identifier (in the header),

• the number of terminals in the strip (lower right),
• the terminal numbers (central column),
• the destinations of the internal and the external sides,
• the display location of the terminal in the circuit diagram (lower left),
• standard strips, if it is one.

With the menu item Representation you can also view the cables.
Terminals can be manipulated individually or in (marked) groups. Such groups are created by marking.

Following manipulations in the terminal editor, the results must be output anew in the terminal diagram
drawing. In batch operation, this is possible with the action terminal diagram, without wiring.

Example: Inserting empty terminals

1. Select a terminal strip and open the terminal editor, there select the strip –1X1 from the tree.
2. Move the cursor to terminal 4 and select the menu item TERMINAL SINGLE / NEW NUMBERING.
3. Enter new terminal number, e.g. terminal 9; terminal 4 now becomes #9.
4. Select STRIP / FILL, new terminals are inserted and marked with the status "-".
5. Now mark the newly added terminals (for reservation), select the menu item MARK / SINGLE.
6. Approach the next terminal with the cursor and hit the action field (lower left in the Editor) until all
desired terminals are marked.
7. Select the point TERMINALS MARKED and then RESERVE. The terminals are now marked with the
status "R".

The terminals are renumbered accordingly in the circuit diagram. The terminal diagram must be output
anew once again. Now you create the terminal diagram without new wiring.

10.2 Defining Cables in the Graphic

BWA02A Core symbol

Symbol for cables
and cores
BWA02A Core symbol

The graphic editing of cables and cores is effected by placing core symbols on the respective connections in
Drawing Editing. By evaluation of these cores symbols, the information stored in the drawing is transferred to
the editing tables. In this context, various automatic procedures and controls are carried out.
Placing symbols
The symbols for the definition of a cable can be called from the toolbar. In the above example there are 3
individual cores with different graphic representations. Each core symbol must be placed on a connection; thus
the connections obtain their properties such as core type or core cross-section.

10.3 Placing cable and core symbols at PTD

H2
Pick up the automatic sequence of placing cable and core symbols by selecting the
appropriate toolbar icon like shown beyond.

Set the cable symbol to the electric wire starting (here) from the left by clicking left mouse
button.

Pick up now the reference point (queried in status bar) and move to the left where you want to
place the cable information (-W). Place that cable item (-W) and subsequently you’re asked
where to place other core symbols to the electrical connections (here two cores in addition).

* The last core symbol to be placed must be confirmed by left mouse button double click!

Editing symbols
The individual cores or conductors are combined to a cable by means of the same cable name. The field cable
name must be filled out. Similarly important are the number of cores and further properties. These can be
retrieved from the cable database via the part number. Since the individual cores all possess the same properties
(except for the core designations), you can use editing with transfer in this case.

Evaluating symbols
During evaluation, there is an adjustment of the drawing data (graphic) with the cable master data. All of the
information on the cable part is transmitted to the symbols, and the entries are checked. The cable information is
entered in the cable table and the core information in the core table.

Creating destinations
While creating destinations (carried out e.g. during the creation of terminal diagrams), the destinations of the
conductors are determined and entered in the core table.

10.4 Entering Cables in the Table

You reach the table-based editing of cables and cores via the menu item VIEW / CABLE PLANNING. This
view offers you 3 editing tables. These editing tables are hierarchically linked to each other.
The cable run table (not yet used at Siemens PTD H2)
A cable run consists of a name and two pieces of target information. This target information usually comprises
location and item specifications. A cable run can be assigned several cables. Through the assignment, the
information is transferred to the cables.
If a cable has been created or is connected by means of a cable run, the respective conductors can be assigned
only to connections corresponding to the same target information.

The cable table

Contains cable data. The number of cores in the cable defines the corresponding cores. The cores are
automatically created for the cable, are managed by and are assigned the data from the cable.

The core table

Contains the individual cores of a cable. The cores are created automatically and numbered consecutively
starting from 1-n..
Note: Core number and core colour are different attributes of a conductor.

Each core symbol used from PTD60617 library must have a core number and a core colour
information! In case core colours are not used they should have the same entries like the core numbers have!

When creating a cable, the core table is filled with core data. The number of core data records depends on the
number of cores in the cable.
These tables can be used to enter, edit and delete cables and cores, respectively. These can later on be used in
drawing editing.

10.5 Re-editing Cores in the Graphic

Evaluated core symbols should not be changed with EDIT but only with IDENTIFY!
From a drawing, use the function "IDENTIFY", cable and core information can be viewed and manipulated
directly in the editing tables. After identification of a core, the cores of the selected cable are displayed in the
editing table "Conductors".

The switch button enables editing the

cable selected with the core

Extract from the possible editing functions

Cores:
A mask for changing the core information is offered.
View sheet:
The drawing where the core selected with the cursor is located is displayed in a window.
Navigate:
Following activation of the button "Navigate", the system switches from the core record to the drawing sheet
where the respective core symbol is displayed.
Cable:
Opens the data record of the selected cable in the cable-editing table. Here changes of the cable data can be made
that are subsequently transferred directly to all conductors of this cable.

This function enables e.g. an alteration of the cable name. The altered entry is transferred to all core symbols
connected to this cable.

11 Creating Parts Lists

The following lists can be generated and edited in the menu VIEW, menu item LISTS:
Contents table: Summary of all drawings and their form entries.
Terminal list: Summary of all evaluated terminal strips and terminals.
Parts list: Summary of all (evaluated) devices in the circuit diagram.
Wiring list: The wiring list contains all of the connections of the project as well as the connected devices. It
contains information on the electrical properties assigned to them.

A definition of the list structure is required for creating any list. It determines which data are put into the list
and which data format is to be used.

11.1 The device parts list

A parts list is a project-related summary of all of the evaluated devices displayed in the circuit diagram; it is up
to date at the time of its creation.
The devices in the drawing are supplemented by device master data during the creation of the parts list or
subsequently.
The following prerequisites should be considered when creating a parts list:
• The project must have been evaluated.
• All devices must have a valid item designation (Code 4 filled out)
• If a device includes a number of items (Code 149), this must be edited at least with "1".
• The device must be of the symbol type 1,5,10,11,12.
• The device must not be positioned in a window type 11.

11.4 Manipulating a Parts List

11.4.1 Regenerating a Parts List

If project data is changed after creation of the list, the lists no longer agree with the project data. The same holds
if lists have been manipulated manually. To re-establish agreement with the project data in the drawings, the
function "Regenerate" can be executed. The regeneration function creates the parts list anew from the data in the
drawing.

Entries in the list that have been entered or changed manually and are not present in the circuit
diagram are lost!

For supplementary parts that have not been drawn in the circuit diagram, you can create a parts list of
its own. In the end you can append this list to the project parts list.

11.4.2 Transferring Parts to a Drawing

If part numbers for devices have been added or changed in the parts list, you can transfer them back into the
circuit diagrams. For this purpose select the point EXTRAS / AUTOMATIC / "Transfer Part to Drawing". All of
the part numbers in the parts list are now transferred to the symbols in the drawings.

11.5 Outputting a Parts List

Printing
For outputting the lists on a printer, the following alternatives are available:
Standard: The output is carried out via the dialog "Output configuration / Printer preview", where certain
aspects of the printout can be changed, for example:
ƒ Contents of header and footer lines (e.g. name of the project, date/time of the printout)
ƒ Font style (bold, italic, underlined)
ƒ Orientation (left-justified, centred, right-justified etc.)

Via protocol: The data output is done on the basis of a print protocol containing the following specifications:

output them into a file.

Export
In ELCAD, lists can be exported in different file formats. For example:
ƒ specific file formats of the Microsoft programs Excel™ (xls) and Access™ (mdb)
ƒ or the ASCII format
The following export functions are available in list editing:
Standard: The export is carried out similarly to that in Microsoft Office™ programs.
Via protocols: The data export is carried out on the basis of an export protocol.
In drawings: Data export for the display in drawings (graphic documents).
In labels: Export of the data in a label format.
to SAP: Export of parts list data to SAP (on the basis of a protocol).

11.7 Master Data in ELCAD

Master data is data that is independent of the project. In ELCAD there are various master databases.
Device master database: The device master database contains device and parts data usually described by the
device manufacturers. The ELCAD master database contains approximately 7,000 devices from various
manufacturers. In drawing editing, this information can be selected from the device master database via the part
number.
Cable database
Strip, plug and terminal master database

11.7.1 Device Master Data

The link to the device master database is established by means of the part number (Code 80), i.e. it is possible to
access the data records of the master database via the field Part Number.
Prerequisite for the data transfer from the circuit diagrams to the parts list and from the master database to the
parts list is that the field Part Number is present in the symbols as well as in the structure of the parts list and the
database.

Connection between drawing editing, master data access and list editing

Each master database has its own structure that determines the appearance of each data record. The definition of
the structure is given during the creation of the database. It can later be manipulated.

Entering and changing a device master data record

The device master database is contained in the project ELCAD_7. For editing device master data you must open
the project. Subsequently you set the working area for the device master data and open the database out of the
object tree by double clicking.
Now you can enter or change data records. For this purpose use the right mouse button in the list area while the
list is open.

The key field of the device master database is the field part number with Code 80. Search keys (S-keys)
facilitating the search e.g. during drawing editing are defined together with the databases.

If device master data is to be added manually, best select a similar data record with the cursor, then select
"New Data Record" with the right mouse button.

Using the Device Master Data

Device master data is entered in the circuit diagrams during editing of the devices. The right mouse button
actuated on the part number field in the symbol enables the selection of device master data. Here the database
configured under Settings is accessed via defined search keys.

11.7.2 Task: Entering Data Records

1. Enter a new data record for a motor in the device master database.
2. Use your motor in the circuit diagram.
3. Now update the parts list.

12 Translate Files
Translate texts are used for translations into other languages. For this purpose there must be so-called translate
files. Translate files are text files organised in lines. The texts are managed and called by means of their line
numbers. A file of its own must be created for each language required for the project management. The numbers
of the texts in the corresponding files must agree as shown in the following figure.
Translate files are located in the directory DAT under TRANS.AUC.

A: Deutsch B: English

Translate-Datei A Translate-Datei B

1. Hauptschalter 1. Main switch

2. Antrieb 1 2. Drive 1
3. Antrieb 2 3. Drive 2
4. Ein 4. On
5. Aus 5. Off
6. Links 6. Left
7. 7.

Example for the content of two translate texts belonging together

The advantage: By exchanging the translate files, the language of the text can be changed at the push of a button.
In project editing, you must for this purpose use a pointer to the line of a file instead of texts. In the example, this
is "\a1" instead of "Main Switch".
Apart from the translate files, which are distributed over several projects, it is also possible to work with a
project-related file.

12.1 Setting Translate Files

In the project or user settings, the identifications A to D are assigned to the names of the translate files. The
dialog is called with the menu item EXTRAS / OPTIONS. Following selection of the tab "User" or "Project" and
a double-click on "Master Data" you can select Translate. Here you can specify under A, B, C and D which
translate files are to be used in the project.

12.2 Using Translate Files

As already mentioned, a translate text is inserted into the desired dialog (e.g. editing dialog for symbols) via its
number. It can be entered directly by inputting the file identification letter and the text number (if known) or
selected by calling the file.

By entering \A (+Right Mouse Button) in the comment field, the list of translate files set under A is opened.
Here you can now select the desired text.

The complete text of the entry is shown if the cursor is positioned on the input field with the short name and
the right mouse button is pressed. If only the file designation is specified, the translate file for selecting the
text is thus opened.

12.3 Editing Translate Files

Opening (a) translate file(s) distributed over several projects
Following selection of the menu item FILE / OPEN / TRANSLATE FILE(S) you are asked for the name(s) of
the file(s) to be opened. Once you have acknowledged your choice with [OK], the files are available at the menu
item EDIT for input, change or deletion.

Entering and changing texts in the translate files

After the creation of a translate file, the texts are entered via the menu item EDIT / ENTER. Here each of them
receives its individual number. Existing texts must be edited with EDIT / CHANGE. Texts are deleted via the
menu item DELETE.

Please note when editing translate files that corresponding files (e.g. in a different language) must be similarly
edited or adjusted.

12.4 Project-Related Translate File

The project-related Translate file can be created but is not mandatory. When the file is called for the first time, it
is automatically created. Alternatively you can create and edit it in the Translate view via the menu item FILE /
OPEN / PROJECT TEXTS (for the project subsequently queried).

The name of the project-related file is always "transpro". It is physically stored in the project
directory. A project-related file can not be deleted in ELCAD. It therefore always remains part of the project.
The texts of the project-related translate file can be used in a meaningful way e.g. in the forms. If in the course of
the editing process a text change becomes necessary it is sufficient to change only the text in the translate file. It
is then updated in all drawings simultaneously.

12.5 Task: Using Translate Texts

1. Use translate texts instead of the device comments on the first and second pages of the circuit diagram.
2. Change the diagrams so that the texts are displayed in a different language (Spanish).

13 Revision Management
ELCAD contains a document-oriented revision management; i.e. a revision state can be fixed for every
drawing. Thus it is possible not only to log modifications but also to compare revision states of a drawing and to
mark changes graphically.
You can specify for each project whether to work with or without revision management. If the revision
management is active, the status line reads "REV". The access to the revision functions is achieved via the object
tree "Drawings".
A revision is automatically set if a drawing is given out as a document. This revision state is assigned a serial
revision identifier (e.g. zero, a, b, c etc.).

The revision management recognises the following changes:

• Addition, deletion or exchange of symbols
• Addition, deletion or modification of free texts
• Modifications of symbol texts
• Addition or deletion of connections
• Modifications of the pen or line type of connections
• Modifications of the connection endings
• Modifications of the symbols for process connections.

14 Basics of Symbol Design

Symbols and their use constitute the basis for working with the ELCAD program. The entire control of the
information in ELCAD is effected via the logic of the symbols, the so-called dialogs. A basic knowledge
concerning the layout of symbols is therefore critically important for an understanding of the way ELCAD
works.

The term symbol encompasses:

ƒ (Device-) symbols consisting of graphic and logic, like indicator lamps, potentials, terminals or PLC input or
output cards.
ƒ Forms and drawing templates respectively for circuit diagrams, terminal diagrams, parts lists, layout
diagrams, tables of content etc.
ƒ Exclusively graphic symbols without logic like e.g. company logos, layout symbols for electrical cabinets
and free graphic.
To facilitate your start with this complex subject, we will describe in this chapter the creation of a sample
symbol that will illustrate the philosophy of symbol design. In this context, only functions will be mentioned that
are required for the example.
Before we start with the creation of the sample symbol, we will first of all give you some background
information.

14.1 Managing Symbols

Symbols are managed in symbol libraries. This ensures that all co-workers use the same, company-wide
standardised symbols.
Up to 4 symbol libraries can be entered in the project and/or user configuration. Project settings override user
settings. If a symbol name occurs in several set symbol libraries, the symbol from the symbol library higher up in
the configuration is used. A symbol library can accommodate up to 2,500 symbols.

Only a qualified and experienced system manager or user should carry out the editing of the symbols or
the symbol libraries. He is responsible to create symbols according to company-specific guidelines and
to make them available to the users in symbol libraries. It is advisable to protect the symbol libraries by
a password against unintentional or unauthorized writing access.

Symbol Dialog

Symbol Name

Symbol Type
Graphic

Symbol Components

Graphic: The symbol graphic specifies the appearance of the symbol in the drawing.
Symbol name: The name is used to call the symbol e.g. for drawing editing. The names of the supplied symbols
have a structured design. Symbols that depend on the type of plan are preceded by an abbreviation for the
diagram type (e.g. CD for "circuit diagram"). You should take this structure, described in the manual
"Environmental Data", into account when creating your own symbols. The manual "Environmental Data" has
been supplied to you as PDF file.
Reference point: Once a symbol has been called while editing a drawing, the centre of the cross-hair pointer
represents the reference point. This point is used for aligning the symbol with the grid of the drawing. For the
supplied symbols the reference point is always located at the top left terminal. We recommend that you keep this
scheme and adopt it for your own symbols.
Symbol type: The symbol type specifies whether and how a symbol is evaluated. It is defined in the working
area "Symbol Design" when saving a symbol.
Symbol dialog: The content of the editing dialog (in drawing editing) is specified by the content of the symbol
dialog. In addition you can here enter functions that equip the system with an intelligence of its own (e.g.
calculations, conditional queries).
Connectors: Connectors form the interface to other symbols and electrical connections.

14.3 Symbol dialogs

The entire logic of a symbol is defined by the dialog lines entered in the symbol dialog. A dialog line is
composed of a dialog number, a code number, a meaning and (optionally) a default value.

Symbol creation

Drawing Editing

Relation between symbol dialog (top) and editing dialog (bottom)

Dialog number (No.): The serial number of each dialog line is assigned by the program. It is required and
queried for the specification of placeholders, connectors and macros. After calling the command "Test" while
editing symbols or drawings, the dialog numbers of the otherwise invisible text placeholders and connectors are
displayed.
Code number (Code): The code numbers specify the function and the evaluation of the symbol. All the
information within ELCAD is transported via code numbers. There are fixed as well as freely assignable code
number ranges. You can find a list of all code numbers in the Online Help.
Meaning: Here the text is entered that appears on the left in the editing dialog (drawing editing). This text
cannot be changed later on by the user of the symbol. With one exception (Code 90, symbol macro), the text has
no meaning whatever for running the program since the program is exclusively symbol-oriented. The texts
entered here should be highly descriptive to allow even users not familiar with the symbol to enter the correct
input during editing. The column "Meaning" can also be used to enter translate texts.
Default value: The data entered in the column "Default value" are later on, in drawing editing, positioned on the
right of the editing dialog and can be overwritten by the user. As a default value, e.g. a connector number, a
device type or a part number can be entered. This saves time during editing.

The object window displays the names of the symbol libraries entered in the settings. You can load another
symbol library via the menu FILE and the menu item OPEN SYMBOL LIBRARY.
If you double-click on a symbol library symbol, the symbols are displayed. The sorting of the symbols within the
object tree can be changed by the user (see "Project Settings").

The most efficient way to design a symbol is to read in a comparable symbol, to change the graphic and/or
logic as required and to store it under a different name.

14.4.2 Creating a Symbol Graphic

The graphic specifies the appearance of the symbol in the drawing. For the creation you use the same graphic
elements as in drawing editing. Lines, rectangles, circles, ellipses and fixed text.
You can define the properties of the graphic elements (line thickness, line type etc.), as in drawing editing, while
executing the graphic command (right mouse button) and change them afterwards (EDIT / OBJECT / EDIT,
right mouse button).

For creating the symbol graphic, we will:

ƒ draw a circle
ƒ draw a horizontal and a vertical line inside the circle
ƒ rotate the graphic 45°
ƒ add lines onto which the connectors will be placed later on

Saving the intermediate result

We recommend saving from time to time the progress in the symbol editing in order to be able to reload this
intermediate state if needed.

The current state of the symbol is copied to the intermediate memory and can if necessary be recalled with EDIT
/ SYMBOL / RESTORE.

The intermediate memory offers a temporary backup possibility. The contents is saved only until it is
overwritten by a new "saving". When exiting ELCAD, the intermediate memory is also saved.

14.4.3 Editing Symbol Dialogs

Now the dialogs important for the functioning of the indicator lamp are defined.
The sample symbol is an indicator lamp that must be evaluable in order to be subject to the check of the item
designation for unambiguousness and to be entered as a component in the parts list. Moreover it forms a
destination for the wiring list.

The sequence of the

code numbers in the
symbol dialog should
be guided by which
lines are edited
frequently. The device
name is always
entered; therefore it is
placed, together with
the specifications
concerning plant,
function and location
in the upper range of
the dialog.

Important code numbers at symbols are the ones for the item name, the technical description, the material data,
the connectors etc. They are also grouped in this way at the symbols and ordered in a certain sequence. Moreover
there are code numbers that bring about clarity in drawing editing. For the indicator lamp, e.g. the following
codes are used.

Code for classifying the symbols (Code 1018)

This code serves to group the dialogs of the symbol into ranges. Each area is represented in the editing dialog
(drawing editing) in a tab of its own. The name of the tab is defined in the column "Default value".

Item designation (Codes 1 to 4)

The item designation is composed of the code numbers 1 to 4. The codes 1 to 3 are used for the higher level
classification and are logically transferred from the form or the window symbol to the active symbol in the
circuit diagram.
Code 4 manages the device identifier.
The entries in Codes 1 to 4 together form the unambiguous item designation. This is checked during evaluation
as a function of the symbol type.

In agreement with international standards for item identification it is formed from designation blocks with
specified classification characters (=, ., +, -).

Example of a composite item designation

Comment (Code 40)

The code 40 contains a comment, a short device description. Example: "Cooling 1, Drive 2". This code number
may be used only once per symbol.

Technical Data (Code 39)

Code 39 belongs to the group "Technical Data". This group is used for information and is usually stored in a
parts master database.
The technical data can be accepted automatically from a database during editing (via the part number) or can be
entered manually as needed.

Type (Code 152)

This code number is used for the classification of the symbol. For the selection from the parts master data, the
code is used as search criterion or filter. It is therefore by default assigned the type identifier that is typical for
the symbol.

Part number (Code 80)

If Code 80 is present, the symbol becomes a component. Without Code 80, the symbol is not entered in the parts
list.
In the editing dialog of the symbol (during drawing editing) the master data can be selected via the part number.
Here all master data whose code number is contained in the symbol and in the master database are accepted.
Code 80 constitutes the coupling between the symbol in the drawing, the device in the parts list and the data
record in the database.

Material Data (Code 150)

This code serves to transfer a general part description to the symbol. For example: "Timesaving installation due
to single-stud terminal" or "Voltmeter changeover switch".

Connector (Code 21)

The code number 21 is required for the definition of the connectors at the device, i.e. for the electrical contact to
a connection.
For every connector, a line with the Code 21 must be defined in the symbol dialog (exception: terminal symbol).
Code 21 is therefore present with a symbol as often as there are electrical connectors. For the sample symbol
there are two connectors corresponding to two Codes 21.

14.4.4 Placing Symbol Texts

For every information that is to be displayed at the symbol in the circuit diagram, a fixed text or a text
placeholder must be set. The latter displays the current content of the line in the editing dialog.
Text placeholders are invisible on the surface of the drawing. They can be made visible with the function "Test
texts" (menu EXTRAS, menu item TEST SYMBOLS / TEXTS). Subsequently the corresponding dialog
numbers of the symbol dialog appear in green with the respective reference points (crosses).

A text placeholder refers to the dialog number in the dialog mask", not to the code number!
If therefore lines are deleted from the dialog mask, the placeholders may point to an empty dialog number. In
this case the graphic displays a "?" instead of the dialog line. The placeholders must then be assigned anew
(by editing) or deleted.

Dialog "Text input"

Dialog for text input for symbols

Fixed text: In drawing editing, fixed symbol texts cannot be edited. They are created during symbol editing with
the dialog "Text input". They can be recognised in the line "Composed Text" as being enclosed in quotation
marks (").
Symbol dialogs (text placeholders): Here you can select the text placeholders that are to be displayed at the
symbol. They are selected from the entries of the symbol dialog and placed at the symbol by means of the line
number (=dialog number).
Combined text: This line contains the entire text (fixed text, text placeholders or a combination of both) as it is
to be displayed at the symbol. In the line "Combined text", any fixed texts and text placeholders can be
combined. They are linked via the character "&".

14.4.5 Placing Electrical Connections

Electrical connectors must be defined for all symbols that are to be electrically connected to other symbols or
circuit parts in the circuit diagram. The entire electrical evaluation in the drawing editing process depends on
connectors and connections.

_____________________________________________
The connections are not limited to circuit diagram symbols; symbols from other areas of the symbolic
construction like hydraulics, pneumatics or electronics can likewise contain terminals that are to be linked to
connections.
Connector definition: Before a connector can be placed, a corresponding line with the code number 21 must be
entered in the symbol dialog.

It is advisable to enter a line for each device connector in the symbol dialog and also to define a
different text for each connector to obtain unambiguous connector designations in the connection and wiring
lists.
Positioning the connectors: When positioning the connectors at the symbol, a fixed grid should be used. When
creating drawings, the connectors can then easily be placed on the connections. It is advisable to choose a grid
width of 5 mm.
If a connection is drawn over a symbol possessing two opposing connectors in the circuit diagram, it is broken at
the connectors. Thus two connections are formed, and the symbol is connected.
Placement sequence of the connectors: ELCAD follows the sequence of the connector placement. On this
basis the allocation of the connection to the respective connector is carried out in the circuit diagram. If the
placement sequence is changed in the symbol, if e.g. a connector is deleted and placed anew, the assignment of
the connections to the connectors in the circuit diagram is no longer correct. In such cases it is advisable to store
the symbol with the altered connectors under a new name.

The placement sequence is checked with the function EXTRAS / TEST SYMBOL / ALL. ELCAD
displays the sequence of the connector placements in large numbers and the corresponding dialog numbers in
small letters in superscript.

Dialog Number

Placement sequence

Display of the placement sequence

Connector designations: For every connector supposed to get a designation at the symbol, a corresponding text
placeholder must be set. The designations can be set in the symbol dialog (standard designations). If the
connectors are to be changed during drawing editing, the standard designation is simply overwritten.

14.4.6 Storing a Symbol

In contrast to drawing editing, the symbol is not automatically saved when exiting the symbol design.
The symbol must be stored manually after having been created. It is stored in the active symbol library under the
symbol name.

_____________________________________________
If there is already a symbol with the same name in the symbol library, it is overwritten after a query. If this
symbol is already being used in drawings, it is updated when the drawing is opened. In this case compatibility
problems may arise if:
ƒ the number of connectors has been changed
ƒ the sequence of connectors (placement) has been changed
ƒ the symbol type has been changed
ƒ the number of the code 1000 has been changed.

Dialog "Save Symbol"

Saving the sample symbol

Name: The symbol name may have a length of up to 16 characters. It is advisable to assign the symbol name
according to fixed designation rules (see manual "Environmental Data", supplied to you as a PDF file). If there is
already a symbol with this name in the symbol library, a cautionary query appears. After saving, the program
issues the serial number under which the symbol is stored. This is only for your information.
Comment: The comment can comprise up to 30 characters and should be descriptive since it is displayed in the
symbol object tree during drawing editing and can thus facilitate the selection.
Type (Symbol type): The symbol type determines the behaviour of the symbol during evaluation in the circuit
diagram. ELCAD contains various symbol types all of which react differently. In this case the symbol type
should be "5" since the item designation is to be checked for unambiguousness during evaluation. The symbol is
moreover to be added to the parts list as a component. In addition, it is to be managed as a destination in the
wiring list and the terminal diagram.
Classifications 1 and 2: The classification is used to determine how the symbols are displayed in the symbol
tree during symbol selection. For each entry, a subgroup (directory) is created in the symbol tree. Symbols with
the same classification entries are displayed in the same group in the symbol tree.

14.4.7 Documenting a Symbol

The creation of symbols goes with an uncompromising and complete documentation.
The documentation should always comprise:
ƒ the symbol dialog
ƒ a printout/plot of the symbol graphic
As output medium for the symbol dialog, the screen (for a preview), a printer or a file can be selected. Below,
the screen output of the sample symbol is depicted.

15.1 Preparing Archiving

The preparation of the archiving procedure is started via the right mouse button actuated on the project.

The archiving preparation should be done on a copy of the working project since the project settings are
changed in this context.

The following steps are executed one after another:

1 - Determination of the symbols used: The function determines all of the symbols used in the diagrams and
copies them into the project directory (into symbol libraries of the same name or, for a combination, into one
common symbol library). Thus the project directory then contains symbol files with precisely as many symbols
as were used in the drawings.
The specification of the respective project directory (.pro) as library path is replaced by the variables $propath /
$project.
2 - Determination of the translate texts used: The function determines all of the translate texts used in the
project data and copies them into the project directory (into respective translate files of the same name).
The specification of the respective project directory (.pro) as translate file path is replaced by the variables
$propath / $project.

After having successfully archived symbols and translate texts, the program automatically returns to the main
menu.

15.2 Executing Archiving

Archiving can now be effected by compressing the project directory (using e.g. WinZip or commercial
compression programs).
With ELCAD, you can use the menu item EXTRAS / PROJECT BACKUP / START BACKUP. Each file is
copied individually to the back-up medium. There is no compression.

In this case the mask shown below must be filled out.

Complete backup
means with the file
Wire.1 (arises from to
the terminal diagram
run)

Now all files are copied into the specified target directory.

Rewriting of project data is effected via the menu item "Start Retrieval".

The project data can also be saved with the Explorer.
