Matlab Questions PDF

This document contains a MATLAB assignment for a Signals and Systems course with 10 questions. The questions involve graphing various continuous-time and discrete-time signals, finding the average power of signals, convolving unit sequences, finding the Fourier series coefficients and reconstructing a periodic signal, taking the DTFT of sinc and other functions, and more. Students are asked to use MATLAB to answer the questions and graph the relevant signals. The assignment is due on December 4th, 2019 and was assigned by instructor Dr. Ahmed Al-Durra.

Assigned date: Saturday 23 November, 2019

Due date: Wednesday 4 December, 2019

Instructor: Dr. Ahmed Al-Durra

Use MATLAB to answer the questions below.

Question 1. Graph the following signals:

𝑡
a. 𝑔 𝑡 = 𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑡 + cos 2𝜋𝑡 + 4 , −5 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 5, (Points: 3)
4
b. 𝑔 𝑡 = 𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑝 𝑡 ∗ sin 4𝜋𝑡 , −5 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 5. (Points: 3)

Question 2. Consider the following continuous-time signal:

𝑔 𝑡 = 4 𝑡 𝑠𝑖𝑛 10𝜋𝑡 , −2 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 2.
a. Graph the even part of the signal without analytically evaluating it, (Points: 4)
b. Graph the odd part of the signal without analytically evaluating it. (Points: 4)

Question 3. Find the average power for the following signals:

a. 𝑥 𝑡 = 2 sin 200𝜋𝑡 , (Points: 4)
𝑡−2 𝑡−4
b. 𝑥 𝑡 = 𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑡 − 4 𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑡 ,
3 2
where 𝑥 𝑡 is periodic with fundamental period T0 = 5. (Points: 4)

Question 4. Graph the following discrete-time signals:

a. 𝑔 𝑛 = 10 𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑝 2n , −5 ≤ 𝑛 ≤ 10, (Points: 4)
2𝜋𝑚
b. 𝑔 𝑛 = ∑𝑛𝑚=0 sin 𝑢𝑚, 0 ≤ 𝑛 ≤ 36. (Points: 4)
12

Question 5. Graph the following signals:

a. 3, 𝑛 ≤ 0,
𝑔𝑛= 3 − 5𝑛, 0 < 𝑛 ≤ 3,
2
−10 + 𝑛 , 3 < 𝑛 ≤ 6, (Points: 4)
20, 𝑛 > 6,
𝑛
b. 𝑔 . (Points: 4)
2

Question 6. Graph the following signals:

a. 𝑔 𝑛 = 𝑢 𝑛 − 0.5𝑢 𝑛 − 7 . (Points: 4)
b. ℎ 𝑛 = 𝑢 𝑛 − 𝑢 𝑛 − 4 . (Points: 4)
c. 𝑦 𝑛 = 𝑔 𝑛 ∗ ℎ 𝑛 . (Points: 4)

Question 7. (Points: 10) Find and graph the unit-sequence response of the system given below.

Question 8.
a. Graph the periodic signal 𝑥 𝑡 , whose fundamental period is 2, described by

𝑠𝑖𝑛 2𝜋𝑡 , |𝑡| < 1⁄2,

𝑥 𝑡 = (Points: 5)
0, |𝑡| < 1,

b. Graph, for 𝑁 = 2, 4 and 10, the signal 𝑥𝑁 𝑡 given by

𝑥𝑁 𝑡 = ∑𝑁
𝑘=−𝑁 𝑐𝑥 𝑘 𝑒
2𝜋𝑘𝑡 ⁄
,

where 𝑐𝑥 𝑘 are the Fourier series coefficients of the signal 𝑥 𝑡 (to be found analytically).

Note: For a comparison purpose, use the same time scale for both signals 𝑥 𝑡 and 𝑥𝑁 𝑡 . Also, the
graph should cover at least two fundamental periods of the original signal 𝑥 𝑡 . (Points: 5)

Question 9. (Points: 15) A signal is defined by

𝑛
𝑥 𝑛 = 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑐 .

Graph the magnitude and phase of the DTFT of 𝑥 𝑛 − 2 .

Note: Use 𝑛 = -𝑁: 𝑁, with 𝑁 = 100,000.

Question 10. Graph the magnitude and phase of the DTFT of:
a. 𝑥 𝑛 = cos 𝜋𝑛⁄2 , 0 ≤ 𝑛 ≤ 100, (Points: 7)
𝜋𝑛⁄2
b. 𝑦 𝑛 = 𝑒 𝑥 𝑛 , (Points: 8)

Note: in the plot, use the frequency range π to π.
