Assignment 06

This document is an assignment from the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Wah. It contains two heat transfer problems involving parallel plates. The first problem involves heating glycerin flowing between parallel plates with hydrogen gas on the outside of the plates. The second problem replaces glycerin with water but is otherwise similar. Students are asked to determine outlet temperatures, plate surface temperatures, and total heat transfer rates. They are also asked to evaluate the assumptions made about evaluating fluid properties at certain temperatures.

PLO-2: Problem Analysis: An ability to identify, formulate, research literature, and analyze complex
engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences
and engineering sciences.
CLO-2: Develop and solve mathematical models for physical problems related to conduction, convection and
radiation for steady state and transient process in one and two dimensions.

Question # 1:

Glycerin is being heated by flowing between two very thin parallel 1-m-wide and 10-m-long plates with
12.5-mm spacing. The glycerin enters the parallel plates with a temperature 20°C and a mass flow rate of
0.7 kg/s . The outer surface of the parallel plates is subjected to hydrogen gas (an ideal gas at 1 atm) flow
width-wise in parallel over the upper and lower surfaces of the two plates. The free-stream hydrogen gas
has a velocity of 3 m/s and a temperature of 150°C. Determine the outlet mean temperature of the glycerin,
the surface temperature of the parallel plates, and the total rate of heat transfer. Evaluate the properties for
glycerin at 30°C and the properties of H2 gas at 100°C. Are these good assumptions?

Question # 2:

Liquid water is flowing between two very thin parallel 1-m-wide and 10-m-long plates with a spacing of
12.5 mm. The water enters the parallel plates at 20°C with a mass flow rate of 0.58 kg/s. The outer surface
of the parallel plates is subjected to hydrogen gas (an ideal gas at 1 atm) flow width-wise in parallel over
the upper and lower surfaces of the two plates. The free-stream hydrogen gas has a velocity of 5 m/s at a
temperature of 155°C. Determine the outlet mean temperature of the water, the surface temperature of the
parallel plates, and the total rate of heat transfer. Evaluate the properties for water at 30°C and the
properties of H2 gas at 100°C. Is this a good assumption?
