1. ARCHITECTURE
Architecture of Oracle E-Business Suite is first and most important thing that you must learn as
Apps DBA. There are three main versions of Oracle E-Business Suite

1. R12.2
2. R12.0/1
3. 11i.

All three versions have Three Tier Architecture i.e.

1. Database Tier
2. Application Tier
3. Client Tier

2. INSTALLATION
Once you are comfortable with Architecture, next is to look at installation of Oracle E-Business
Suite. Installation on Unix is done using ROOT user Rapid Install.

Installation can be
Single User: both Application and Database Tier are owned by same user
Multi User: Application and Database Tier are owned by different user

Installation can be
Single Node: Both Application and Database Tier are on same host
Multi Node: Application and Database Tier are on more than one node

3. START/STOP
Once you understand installation, next task is to learn how to start & stop Oracle E-Business
Suite. As you know by now, on server side are two tiers i.e. Database Tier & Application Tier. To
stop, you first stop application tier and then stop database tier where as to start, you first start
Database Tier and then Application Tier.

Startup/Shutdown services are wrapped up under AD scripts where AD stands for Application
DBA.

4. Autoconfig
At times you need to change configuration or set a particular configuration. Oracle E-Business
Suite configures both Application Tier and Database Tier configuration using tool called
Autoconfig.

Autonconfig uses Template & Driver Files, and configuration file called Context File (XML
file) containing all configuration.

5. PATCHING
Patching is process to fix a defect identified in application or add enhancements. Patching process
has changed in Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2 where it now uses patching Utility ADOP
where OP standard for Online Patching.

Tool to apply patches in Oracle E-Business Suite R12.0/12.1 and 11i is ADPATCH

6. CLONING
Cloning is process of creating replica of Oracle E-Business Suite Environment. At times you need
to clone your production environment so any defect or new functionality can be tested on
environment similar to production.

Oracle E-Business Suite uses tool called Rapid Clone to create replica (clone) of both Database
Tier & Application Tier.
