Executive Summary
INTRODUCTION
Pumps play a dominant role in the sectors like agriculture, production of oil and
natural Gas, petroleum refining, power generation, domestic and household utilities, etc, and
contribute a major part in nation’s economy. The Indian pump manufacturers have
traditionally catered to the needs of domestic market. In India, pumps are mainly used for
pumping water from wells in household. With the effect of LPG( Liberalization,
Privatization and Globalization) the Indian pump manufactures have started exporting to
foreign countries, where pumps are used for various purposes in different sectors like, oil
refineries, steel miles, mines etc.
This has led to the increasing trend in export of pumps. The Indian pumps market is
fairly mature, with domestic sales expected to increase at rate of 16 to 18 per cent per year,
and exports projected to grow at around 10 to 12 per cent over the next few years. In India
and MNCs with revenues above Rs 100 corer and plenty of SME players. The pumps market
is broadly classified into two categories: industrial pumps, which cater to infrastructure
sectors; and agriculture and domestic pumps. International players include KSB pumps,
Flowserve, Cheran pumps, CRI, Texmo, Sharp and Aquasub, which have manufacturing
bases in India. Moreover, low cost manufacturing and domestic demand have created an
attractive environment for most international players. These companies have also introduced
the largest technologies for energy efficiency and high performance.

1.1 INDUSTRY PROFILE
In India the manufacturer of pumps has by now a history of nearly eighty years.
pumps being the basic equipment for every sphere of the national economy, the Indian pump
industry has in its own growth, contributed immensely to the economic growth of the
country. The enterprise in the Indian pump industry merits appreciation for the achievements
of prompt and competent indigenization of almost every type of pump, of pumps in gigantic
sizes, of pumps of a variety of constructional features and operational sophistications and of
pumps in a variety of material of construction. The industry has over the years built up great
potentials to meet challenges. It has also worked with good foresight and resilience to adapt
to emerging trends, be it the compliance with requirements of the quality systems as per the
ISO 9000 series of standards or the exposure to the global competition, prompted by the
liberalization of the economy. It is estimated that the production of pumps in the country is
presently of the order of Rs. 1200 cores, contributed by some one million pumps per year,
produced by some 500 odd manufactures of large, medium and small scales. The following
review surveys some notable achievements and developments of pumps and of the
capabilities of the Indian pump industry to fulfill the country’s domestic demand from
various sectors.

1.2COMPANY PROFILE
The founder MR.P.G.Mahalingam named the group CHERAN with the principles of
“quality at its best”. Initially being a son of a farmer from a village, founder understood the
day-to-day toughness and hardness faced by the farmers. Once when the water scarcity was at
peak during late 80`s, he had an idea to opt for a bore well service in his own farm to sort out
the scarcity issue, when the bore work was done he faced tremendous risk in getting the
suitable motors and pumps at affordable price for his bore well. That incident kindled his
heart repeatedly about the toughness faced by a farmer to satisfy his or her own basic need of
water. Since then he was repeatedly planning to find a solution for these problems in a wide
range to help all his fellow farmer bloods. Learning all the ethics behind the system he
proclaimed to set up a service and motor pump set unit in early 90`s which paved the
basement for the Cheran groups. To stand unique and provide the best service many special
schemes like onsite field inspection, customized un-size pump sets based on the consumer’s
requirement were introduced by the company which was highly welcoming. Later step-by-
step people`s choice towards the firm was highly appreciating as the company’s products, its
system and service was highly satisfactory to all the customers. With the Valuable customers,
trustworthy Stakeholders, Step by step many business ventures have been started up one by
one under the group. At present the group has below mentioned various different portfolios of
businesses servicing the people around the globe,

MACHINING
Some machine operation is done on manual machines, while others utilize computer
numerical control (CNC) machines, where computers are used to control the movement and
37
operation of the mills, lathes, and other cutting tools.
An experienced machinist runs computer numerical
control machines.
coil winding is the manufacture of electromagnetic coils. Coils are used as components of
circuits, and to provide the magnetic field of
motors, transformers, and generators, and in
the manufacture of loudspeakers and
microphones. The shape and dimensions of
a winding are designed to fulfill the
particular purpose. Parameters such as
inductance, Q factor, insulation strength,
and strength of the desired magnetic field
greatly influence the design of coil
windings. Coil winding can be structured into several groups regarding the type and geometry
of the wound coil. Mass production of electromagnetic coils relies on automated machinery.
ASSEMBLING
38
TESTING
Thermodynamic pump testing is a form of pump testing where only the temperature rise, power
consumed, and differential pressure need to be measured to find the efficiency of a pump. These
measurements are typically made with insertion temperature probes and pressure probes fitted to
tapping points on the pump's inlet and outlet. From these measurements, the flow produced by a pump
can be derived.
PACKING
Packaging is the science, art and technology of enclosing or protecting products for
distribution, storage, sale, and use. Packaging also refers to the process of designing,
evaluating, and producing packages. Packaging can be described as a coordinated system of
preparing goods for transport, warehousing, logistics, sale, and end use.
