The College
The College of Geosciences grew out of the Exploration Department of Beijing
Petroleum Institute established in 1953, which was the predecessor of the
Department of Geosciences of China University of Petroleum (Beijing). In 2001, this
department evolved to College of Geosciences.
The college consists of Departments of Geology, Department of Petroleum Geology,
Department of Geochemistry and Environmental Science, the Research Center of
Basin and Reservoir, and the State Key Laboratory of Petroleum Resources and
Prospecting. The college has a staff body of 110 including 39 professors and 38
associate professors. 80% of the staff holds doctor’s degree. The 39 professors
include three academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, two specially-
appointed professor of the Yangtze River Scholar Plan and one chief scientist of 973
Project. From 1953 the college has cultivated more than 10,000 talents specialized
in oil and gas exploration and development. Currently, the college has over 938
undergraduate students, 843 postgraduate students, 140 PhD disciplinestudents and
20 Post doctor students. The college currently offers two Bachelor programs, eight
Master programs, and two Doctoral programs.
With a balanced development of teaching, research and the construction of , the
College of Geosciences aims to build itself into an internationally influential research
group and to cultivate more talents specialized in Geosciences and Environmental
Sciences.

The College
The history of this college can be traced back to 1953, when the Department of
Petroleum Drilling was firstly established in Beijing Petroleum College. Over of the
past six decades, the college has been playing an important role for the oil and gas
industry, especially in cultivating young generations of professionals.
Having been ranking the 1st place in the field of oil&gas engineering in China ever
since it was founded, our college never forget its ambition, which is to cultivate
highly-qualified inter-disciplinary talents for the society and conduct research on the
cutting-edge technology. Aiming at this goal, the college emphasizes a solid
foundation for every student in petroleum engineering fundamentals and basic skills
 needed in this industry by delivering high qualified research-based education to
students. Moreover, a series of high-end laboratories and assorted facilities have
been established. The college of Petroleum Engineering has access to extensive
laboratory facilities that are currently being utilized to conduct physical and chemical
testing and computer modeling. On top of that, with an ever growing faculty led by 2
Chinese Academy of Sciences, a mature personnel training system has been
working effectively.
Most noticeably, the college of petroleum engineering also devote to developing a
global perspective. Our international reputation grows with the quality of our
graduates, the construction of first-level subjects and our academic capacity.

A sixty-years-history is long enough to write a biography, which is full of vicissitudes

The College
The College of Geophysics and Information Engineering is consisted of six
departments (Exploration Geophysics, Well Logging, Software Engineering,
Computer Science and Technology, Automation and Electrical Engineering), three
experimental and teaching centers (geophysics, computation, information
engineering) and research institutes (CNPC key laboratory of geophysical
exploration, CNPC key laboratory of well logging, Sinopec geophysical research
center, key laboratory of earth prospecting and information engineering, research
center of geology and geophysics, research center of petroleum data mining). The
college also supports the “State Key Laboratory of Petroleum Resources and
Prospecting” together with the College of Geosciences and College of Petroleum
Engineering.
The college has staff body of 129, including 33 professors, 34 associate professors,
62 lecturers. The total student number at this year is 1822, including 1083
undergraduates, 592 graduate students and 147 Ph.D. students. We currently offer
one state key subject, three PhD. programs, 17 master degree programs and 4
bachelor degree programs (Prospecting Technology and Engineering, Measurement
and Control Technology and Instruments, Computer Science and Technology, and
Automation). Our postdoctoral program is more than happy to host qualified scholars
or researchers from China or abroad.
Our mission is to meet the demands of energy industry, promote the development of
petroleum technology and enhance the research of oil and gas prospecting and

In March of 2010, by re-organizing university’s vast resources and distinguished
faculty, the College of Geophysics and Information Engineering was formed.
Consisted of departments of Exploration Geophysics, Well Logging, Software
Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Automation and Electrical
Engineering, it has the largest faculty in the university and aims at building world
