10th Grade Write Up Community Service
Number of Hours completed: 33 hrs. Hours per day: 2-3 approx. Days per week: 1
1. Write a description (minimum 2 paragraphs) of what you did for community service.
What kinds of tasks did you perform and whom did you work with?
Starting my foundational rotation with my partner Dania our first tasks at the Dignity Health
Hospital in Downtown Los Angeles, was at the security desk greeting patients and visitors. Other
than greeting the people coming into the hospital, I guided some patients and visitors to the
Emergency Room. After four weeks at the security desk, my next task for my foundational
rotation I did two tasks called courtesy cart and clothing closet. Courtesy cart included going
throughout the hospital where all the patients are and offer them something to entertain
themselves with like magazines or word searches. Clothing closet consists of washing, drying,
folding, and storing clothes in an actual closet full of clothes to give to homeless patients.
All the tasks I have mentioned before were part of a familiarization basic foundational cycle to
prepare volunteers before the school years and choosing a department to volunteer for in the fall
semester. I have met an array of people in different positions around the hospital. I have met
security guards, volunteer coordinators, nurses, almost all of the Human Resources Department,
and some doctors. I enjoy volunteering at Dignity Health and with those around me at the
hospital.
2. Write a one page reflection about your experience, positive and negative, and what you
learned about yourself, others and health services available while completing your community
service. Would you like working here? What job would you want if you worked here?
For the first time volunteering in a hospital environment I have really enjoyed the close
volunteer coordinators, Tracy Trobek and Natalie Camaal, are the people that manage the
volunteer program, not only do they organize the volunteers and their duties, but give guidance
about school, careers, and life as the volunteers and I raise to work in the medical field. Having
such guiding role models in the medical environment helps shed some light on the chances I
have in working in the medical field. Speaking of the medical field, there are so many different
careers available within said field. With my position most recently at the Human Resources
Office I have learned about an array of people that do different jobs at the hospital. Sure I have
met doctors and nurses, but I’ve learned about hospital administration, lab technicians,
radiologists, and etc. Which is a big positive for have so many options in working in the medical
field and since each career have different strengths, so while I lear which is my best strength I
I would love to work at Dignity Health in Downtown LA. I want to work as a pediatric nurse in
the NICCU of the hospital. I also have a personal connection to the hospital, since I was born
there. I’m completely sure they birth babies right since, I’m not dead.(Joking). When I used to
round the hospital for the courtesy cart, my favorite floor was the eight floor, where the babies
So far I have mentioned the positives in volunteering and that is all I can think of. For instance,
another positive is the flexibility of hours. When I go to the hospital, I generally volunteer for
two to three hours at most. Unfortunately, as a senior in highschool my schedule is mostly busy,
but I can always count on the hospital to help find a way to come in and volunteer once a week.
