Vibration Isolation

Vibration isolation is the process of isolating an object from vibration sources using passive or active techniques. Passive techniques use mechanical elements like springs, rubber pads, and wire ropes to reduce vibration transfer. Active techniques add sensors, controllers, and actuators using electric power for finer control. Vibration isolation is important for protecting sensitive machinery, reducing sound and safety issues, and ensuring quality. Common applications include industrial equipment, vehicles, electronics, and precision instruments.

Vibration isolation

What is vibration isolation:

▪ Vibration isolation is the process of isolating an object, such as a
piece of equipment, from the source of vibrations.

▪ Vibration is undesirable in many domains, primarily engineered

systems and habitable spaces, and methods have been developed
to prevent the transfer of vibration to such systems. Vibrations
propagate via mechanical waves and certain mechanical linkages
conduct vibrations more efficiently than others.
Importance of vibration isolation techniques in
industries

▪ Protect sensitive machinery

▪ Reduce sound
▪ Safety issue
▪ Quality protection
Passive isolation
▪ "Passive vibration isolation" refers to vibration isolation or
mitigation of vibrations by passive techniques such as rubber
pads or mechanical springs, as opposed to "active vibration
isolation" or "electronic force cancellation" employing
electric power, sensors, actuators, and control systems.
▪ All mechanical and electrical systems in the real world
contain some amount of damping.
▪ Damping is used in passive isolators to reduce the amount of
amplification at the natural frequency.
Type of Passive Isolation Applications Typical Natural Frequency

Large industrial equipment, 1.5 - 3 Hz, large systems

Air Isolators
some optics and instruments customized to 0.5 Hz

Heavy loads, pumps,

Springs or spring dampers 3 - 9 Hz
compressors

Large high-load applications

sensitive instruments, optics
Negative-stiffness isolators 0.17 - 2.5 Hz
and laser systems,
cryogenic systems

Active isolators
• Active vibration isolation systems contain, along with the
spring, a feedback circuit which consists of a sensor,
a controller, and an actuator.
• Processed by a control circuit and amplifier.
Proximity sensors:

Piezoelectric motor:

A piezoelectric motor or piezo motor is a type of electric motor based on the change in shape of a piezoelectric material when an
electric field is applied , in which deformation or vibration of the piezoelectric material produces an electric charge
Vibration isolators in electronics

▪ Effectively protect it against physical shock.

▪ Industrial control computers and electronic systems
▪ Damping on-board computers in aircraft and on ships
▪ Military ordinance computers
▪ Electronic equipment in transit in shipping containers
▪ Electronics and instruments for mining/drilling support
vehicles
Applications & uses
▪ There are two types of vibration isolation applications
▪ The first type is designed to reduce the transmission of
vibratory forces from a piece of equipment to the foundation
on which it is mounted
▪ The second type of vibration isolation application is designed
to reduce the transmission of vibration velocity or amplitude
to the piece of sensitive equipment that is mounted on the
floor or to another structural member.
