LAB 2 - The Selection Strategy

The document summarizes a lab exercise on material selection for a helmet visor. The objectives are to maximize fracture toughness (K1c) while allowing molding and transparency. Materials are screened and ranked in CES EduPack based on these criteria. Polycarbonate ranks first due to highest fracture toughness, providing maximum resistance to fracture. Cellulose polymers ranks second. Borosilicate glass ranks last as it has the lowest fracture toughness and is not suitable.

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the practical activity, students will be able to:

1. Explain the selection strategy of materials

2. Applying the methodology to achieve solution that requires it.

INTRODUCTION

Selection strategy helps with identifying the link between the material, its function,
constraints and objectives that needs to be achieved.

LIST OF INSTRUMENTS/TOOLS:

1. CES EduPACK 2013 Software

HELMET VISOR

A material is required for the visor of a safety helmet to provide maximum facial
protection. To allow clear vision the visor must be optically transparent. To protect the face
from the front, from the sides, and from below it must be doubly curved, requiring that the
material can be molded based on Figure 1. We thus have two constraints: transparency and
ability to be molded.

Fracture of the visor would expose the face to damage; maximizing safety therefore
translates into maximizing resistance to fracture. The material property that measures
resistance to fracture is the fracture toughness, K1c. The objective is therefore to maximize
K1c.

DOCUMENTATION

Find information on all materials left either online or any source and place in the text
box below

From the result by following the objective-“Maximise fracture toughness” of the material,
we found that POLYCARBONATE(PC) have the highest fracture toughness. Which mean that it
has the highest ability to resistance from fracture and protect the face from high impaction.

6
From the result by following the objective-“Maximise fracture toughness” of the material,
we found that CELLULOSE POLYMERS(CA) have second highest fracture toughness.

7
From the result by following the objective-“Maximise fracture toughness” of the material, we found
that BOROSILICATE GLASS has the lowest fracture toughness. Which mean that this material is
not suitable to make the helmet.

8
Based on the information gathered. Choose the 3 materials that are likely candidate
for helmet visor based on Screenig, Ranking and Documentation steps done. Rank them
below in order of best (1) to lowest (3):

1. POLYCARBONATE(PC)

2. CELLULOSE POLYMERS(CA)

3. BOROSILICATE GLASS
