Design and Development of Wireless Usb Wi

This document describes a student project to develop a two-in-one wireless USB adapter that allows a user to connect a mouse and access Wi-Fi. It includes an abstract, objectives, literature review on relevant topics, methodology describing user testing, and results. The student designed and built a prototype wireless USB adapter and software, tested it, identified issues, and improved the design. User testing showed the device was highly functional but could be improved further. The summary provides an overview of the key sections and purpose of the student project.

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF WIRELESS USB WI-FI

AND MOUSE ADAPTER

MARIO B. LINDO Jr.

ABSTRACT

This proposed project entitled “Wireless USB Wi-Fi and Mouse Adapter” aimed to develop
a two and one functional devices. When used the USB adapter, the user can operate mouse device
and as well connect in the wireless Wi-Fi. Also, the researcher designed and developed a software
application for wireless Wi-Fi and mouse connectivity. After the researcher built the project, the
researcher tested the functions of both hardware and software of the project. After testing the
project, the researcher revised and improved device’s malfunctioning and defect parts. The result
showed that question 5 (Less power/battery consumption of laptop and desktop computer) got the
lowest mean score of 3.87. Thus, in terms of functionality of the whole system, the overall average
of the project is highly functional with a total mean score of 4.93. The result of the present study
could be recommended in terms of the speed of the wireless network, compatibility, power
consumption and plug and play design. The device is highly functional but the completed project
needs further study in order to improve its functionality.

1.0 Introduction

A wireless technology recently has become our life saver in the communication process
and also in sharing of information. Private and public institutions, individuals, businesses, non-
profit organizations, government agencies and other corporate have already invested heavily and
grown the wireless technology operations. Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi), is the common term in the
process of connection local area network (LAN) with high frequency wireless. Wi-Fi allows
electronic devices to connect to LAN and enables Internet access to devices such as the laptops,
smartphone and tablets.
Wi-Fi has gained popularity because of installation simplicity and the increased number of
Wi-Fi radio equipped laptops. Currently, many businesses like airports, cafés, restaurants, and
shopping areas offering wireless internet-services to customers. Demand for wireless technologies
has gained more importance in business and everyday-life, as population is getting denser by
closely spaced buildings. Wi-Fi networks have easy deployment in markets, offices, airports, and
other locations providing advantages like flexibility, mobility, ease of use, and low cost.
ii

Computers have become a very important part of today’s life. From work related aspects
to just passing the time, computers are used. Using a computer is normally an easy task that
requires basic control using a mouse and keyboard to do what a user wants the computer to do. A
quote in the IBM training manual 1991 states “For people without disabilities, technology makes
things easier. For people with disabilities, technology makes things possible.” Computers are
pieces of technology put together to work as a system. Their controls are made for majority of the
population and not many adaptive technologies are available for people with disabilities.

Objectives
This study aims to design and develop of Wireless USB Wi-Fi and Mouse Adapter. Which
specifically has the following objectives:
1. Design and Develop Wireless USB Adapter.
2. Create Software Application Installer.
3. Revised defects found during testing.

2.0 Brief Literature Review

Wireless USB LAN Adapter

A high-speed wireless network card that is used to access a network through a USB port
on a computer or laptop. Most wireless USB LAN adapters look like small USB flash drives and
usually are based on the 802.11g standard which provides a data rate up to 54-Mbps in a wireless
LAN environment. Some wireless USB LAN adapters may also support the 802.11b standard. A
wireless USB LAN adapter basically enables you to share files, folders, printers, other network
resources and Internet access (Beal, 2019).

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)

RFID technology has generated much hype in the last few years. The major driver for its
development has been the tagging of physical objects – people, places, and things – with single
chip radios so they can interface with computers. RFID technology is both hailed as the key to the
―Internet of Things, ‖ and condemned as invasive surveillance technology, and in more extreme
circles it is feared as the Mark of the Beast. An RFID system can be broken down into two key
dimensions. The technical infrastructure includes the actual data capture technology comprised of
tags, readers, and transmission medium. The logical infrastructure refers to the overall
identification (ID) scheme used in representing objects Charlie Fine et. al (2006).

Wireless Mouse
A cordless mouse, also called a wireless mouse, is a mouse that connects to a computer
without the use of wires. Instead, the mouse uses some manner of wireless technology, like
Bluetooth, RF, or infrared radio waves. Usually, a USB receiver is plugged into the computer and
receives signals from the cordless mouse (Computer Hope, 2019).

Driver
A driver, or device driver, is a software program that enables a specific hardware device to
work with a computer's operating system. Drivers may be required for internal components, such
iii

as video cards and optical media drives, as well as external peripherals, such as printers and
monitors (TechTerms, 2012).

Computer peripheral devices

Any device connected internally or externally to a computer and used in the transfer of data
to or from a computer. A personal computer (PC) or workstation processes information. Data
(unprocessed information) must get into the computer, and the processed information must get out.
Information is entered and displayed on a wide variety of accessory devices called peripherals,
which are also known as input/output (I/O) devices. Some peripherals (such as keyboards) are only
input devices, others (such as most printers) are only output devices, and some are both. Peripherals
may be located inside or outside a computer's case (called an internal or external device,
respectively). The I/O bus is the collection of circuits where an internal device is attached. An I/O
port (such as parallel or serial port) is a connector where an external device is connected (plugged
in) (Malcolm, 2014).

3.0 Methodology

The data was collected using a paper-based questionnaire. The aim of the questionnaire
was to examine the extent of Wireless USB Wi-Fi and Mouse Adapter use amongst this project
proposal. The paper questionnaire was handed out at the end of a selected number students present
at the university campus. Questionnaires were given randomly, based on student residing in the
university campus. The survey was available for a week and 15 members in the university
responded to the invitation by completing the survey. All responses were anonymous and no
personal details such as email or IP addresses were collected thereby ensuring privacy. The survey
comprised of closed ended questionnaire organized around three topics. These were: (1) Quality
of Wireless USB Adapter, (2) Process/Operation and (3) Cost. For purposes of clarity, the
discussion and results will be presented organized around these four topics with the results.

5.0 Conclusions and Recommendations

The wireless USB adapter is a computer peripheral devices that commonly used in these
generation because of the convenient and hassle free in using with wire devices such as mouse,
keyboard and LAN (Local Area Network). In this proposal the researcher aimed to develop a
wireless USB adapter that has a two and one connectivity between wi-fi and mouse, that operates
two technologies at the same time. The researcher also conducts a survey within a week and 15
members in the university responded to the invitation by completing the survey.
Analysis of the survey data formulate using t-Test shows the mean of existing (3.046) and
develop (4.24), the existing variance (0.40) and the develop variance (0.24), pooled variance
(0.32), total observation is 10 and the hypothesis mean difference is 0. This gather data is based
on the survey questioner and for more data information is tabulate in the section of discussion of
results.
This research will be an effective tool and reference for the researchers who would intend
to make any further relevant research particularly the design and development wireless USB wi-fi
and mouse adapter.
