 ABSTRACT

Language is the main tool of communication. Every human need a

communication with the other people. To understand the meaning in every
communication which occurs with language, we are necessary to know the
contextual information, like the person, time, place, and circumstance where the
language is uttered. Every utterance refers to different things based on the
speaker‟s meaning Deixis shows the phenomenon where in understanding the
meaning of certain words and phrases in an utterance requires contextual
information. The writer choose the title for this analysis which is “ Pragmatical
Analysis of Deixis in Selected Sentences on Mad Max Fury Road Movie “. This
study concern on Person deixis, Spatial deixis, Temporal deixis on selected
sentences in on Mad Max Fury Road’s movie.

The purpose of this study are (1) to find the trypes of Diexis used on“ Mad
Max Fury Road “ movie script. (2) to identify the context meanings of sentences
used on “ Mad Max Fury Road“ movie script. (3) to find out the functions of
types of diexis used on “ Mad Max Fury Road “ movie script.

Due to the fact that deixis is important to indicate impermanent reference,

English learner should enrich themselves by understanding types of deixis and
how deixis are used in an utterance based on the context of the conversation or
sentence.

INTRODUCTION

Background of Analysis
In the daily life, human use language to communicate with the other. By
communication, people can convey their idea. In communication, language is
used to transferring information and message. Crystal (1992: 212. People usually
use the context of the situation, the place, and the subject of communication.

The most problem of communication that happen both of the speakers and
hearers when the speakers and hearers get miscommunication about the meaning
of word that related to the context of situation.If the hearer knows the context, the
language can beunderstanding clearly about what the meaning. From this case, the
study of contextual meaning is called pragmatics.

Nowadays, movie is completely popular. Everyone loves to watch movie.

Movies, also known as films, are a type of visual communication which uses
moving pictures and sound to tell stories or inform (help people to learn). People
in every part of the world watch movies as a type of entertainment, a way to have
fun, and finds the certain infromations.

There are many genres of movie. There are some genres of movie, for
instance ; Action, adventure, drama, horror, thriller, crime, etc. One of the favorite
genres is Action. Action movies have a lot of exciting effects like car chases and
gun fights, involving stuntmen. They usually involve 'goodies' and 'baddies', so
war and crime are common subjects. This genre are challenging, complicated,
make a tense in every minute of movie, unpredictable, and sometimes out of logic.

One of the best action movies is Mad Max Fury Road. It tells about a
woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in postapocalptic Australia in search for
her home-land with the help of a group of prisioner, a psycotic worshipper, and
drifter Max.

 On this movie, there are a lot of personal pronoun, time, and place are
mentioned by the characters. Sometimes, the viewer might be confuse because the
speaker refer to some another character ( personal pronoun ), places, and random
time. All of them have implicit meaning.

Deixis found not only in everyday life, but also in literature, for example
the film. Steward (1983: 352-353) states that the film is a work of art that has
been worldwide literary and theatrical shows, the arrangement of the stage, music,
natural beauty and most importantly the use of light and color.

Based on the problem above, the writer attracted to analyze about and
identify some selected sentences of Max Mad Fury Road movie’s script using
diexis of linguistic. Moreover, In a movie, many utterances have different
meaning.

Therefore we might know what the conversational or statement purposes

are. Beside that, understanding the meaning of conversation is needed by viewer
in order to avoid misunderstanding and enjoying the movie intensely.

Formulation of the Research Question

1. What are the types of Diexis used in “ Mad Max Fury Road “ movie
script?
2. What are the context meanings of sentences used on “ Mad Max Fury
Road “ movie script?
3. What are the functions of types of diexis used on “ Mad Max Fury Road “
movie script ?

The Objective of Analysis

1. To find the trypes of Diexis used on“ Mad Max Fury Road “ movie script.
2. To identify the context meanings of sentences used on “ Mad Max Fury
Road“ movie script.
3. To find out the functions of types of diexis used on “ Mad Max Fury Road

The Scope of Analysis
There are many kind of deixis which are used in literature for example novel,
poem, drama and speech, movie, and song lyrics. To make easily in understanding
this explanation, the writer limited the scope of the study in order to make it more
detail and focus. The writer choose three types of deixis based on the theory of
Stephan Levinson is included :

1. Person deixis
2. Spatial deixis
3. Temporal deixis

Morever, the writer will limit and concern on 3 main characters, they are Max,
Furiosa, and Immortan Joe, and the other character, they are Nux and Miss Giddy.
Significance of the Study

1. To develop the understanding about types of deixis in conversation by

using film as the media.
2. To find out the ways to understand about the meaning based on the
context in written form actually in the film.
3. To give an information about how to concern not only grammatically
form but also concerning in the context.

 REVIEW OF LITERATURE
A. Review of related literature
In order to support this analysis, I consult the other thesises related to this
analysis which were done by some students. They are:
1. Aulia Fauziah ( 2015 ), in her thesis entitled, “An Analysis Of Deixis In “A
Thousand Words” Movie Script By Steve Koren”. In this thesis, she found
a lot of words related to deixis. She concern to find out the types of deixis
and the function of each type.
B. Topic Analysis
This chapter discusses some theories related to the topics of the study. The
literature review consist of the pragmatics, deixis, movie, and synopsis of the
movie.
1. Pragmatics

The linguistic subfields of semantics and pragmatics are both related to the
study of meaning. Semantics studies the relation between word meanings. On the
other hand, pragmatics studies the way in which the context shapes meaning.
Pragmatics show that the interpretation of utterances not only depends on
linguistic knowledge, but also depends on knowledge about the context of the
utterance, knowledge about the status of those involved, such as the social
information that is encoded with various expressions regarding the relative social
status and familiarity, the intent of the speaker, the place and time of the utterance.

Pragmatic is the study of “invisible” meaning, or how we recognize what

is meant even when it isn’t actually said or written. In order for that to happen,
speakers (or writers) must be able to depend on a lot of shared assumptions and
expectations when they try to communicate. The investigation of those
assumptions and expectations provides us with some insights into how more is
always being communicated than is said. Pragmatics is the study of the
relationships between linguistic forms and the users of those forms. Pragmatic
awareness is regarded as one of the most challenging aspects of language
learning, and it often comes through experience. Deictic expressions fall into the

following categories: person deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, social deixis,
and discourse deixis.

2. Deixis

Deixis is one of pragmatics. Deixis always found in our daily

communication or in text. Deixis is a technical term (From Greek) for one of the
most basic things we do with utterance, it means ‘pointing’ via language. A
deictic expression (or deixis) is a word or phrase (such as this, that, these, those,
now, then) that points to the time, place, or situation in which a speaker is
speaking. There are some very common words in our language that can’t be
interpreted at all if we don’t know the context, especially the physical context of
the speaker.

Deixis is used to points the things (it, this, these ) and people (him, them,
those), sometimes called person deixis. Words and phrases used to point to a
location (here,there, near that) are examples of spatial deixis, and those used to
point to a time (now, then, last week) are examples of temporal deixis. Deixis is
clearly form of referring that is tied to the speaker‟s context, with the most basic
distinction between deictic expression being „near speaker‟ and „away from
speaker‟ (Yule,1996:9). In other word, deixis always need the context to
determine the referral. Traditionally, deictic consist of person or personal deixis,
spatial or place deixis, and temporal or time deixis.

In person deixis, there are consist of three part. first person deixis is
contain (I),second person deixis (You), and the third person deixis (He, She, or It).
The spatial or place deixis is the word that where location of speech event. It
contains demonstrative pronouns such as (This and That) and the demonstrative of
adverb of place such as (Here and There). For the time or temporal deixis, it
concern in time of speech event.It contains (now, then, yesterday, tomorrow,
today, tonight, nextweeek, last week, this week). The categories can be used to

analyse the language that sometimes the hearer or addresse not understand about
what the speaker means. So, deixis can make the language easier to understand.

a. Types of Deixis
According to Yule (1996:9) types of deixis divided in three types, there
are person deixis, spatial deixis, and temporal deixis.
1) Person Deixis
The distinction just describe involves person deixis, with the
speaker (‘I’) and the address (‘you’) mentioned. The simplicity of this
form disguises the complexity of their use. To learn those deictic
expressions, we have to discover that each person in a conversation shifts
from being „I‟ to being „you‟ constantly (Yule, 1996:11). There kinds of
person deixis, first person, second person and third person :
a) First person
First person deixis is a deictic reference which refers to the speaker
himself. Yule (1996: 10) define that person deixis clearly operates on a
basic three part division, exemplified by the pronouns for first person (I),
second person (you), and third person (He, She, or It). First person here is
the speaker in utterance as the sender of the massage.
b) Second person
Second person is the encoding of the speaker‟s reference to one or
more addressee (Levinson, 1983:62). According to Renkema (1993 : 73)
that the manner in which the second person is addressed can, in some
language, also provide an insight into the relationship between the first and
second person. According to (Yule, 1996:10) person deixis “you” as he
addressee and we have to discover that each person in conversation shift
from being “I” to being “you” constantly to learn this deictic expression.
c) Third person
Third person is the encoding of reference to persons and entities
which are neither speaker nor addresses of the utterance (Levinson,
1983:62).In many languages, these deictic categories of speaker,

 addressee, and other(s) are elaborated with markers of relative higher
status versus addressee with social status (for example addressee with
higher status versus addressee with lower status). The discussion of
circumstances which lead to the choice of one of this forms rather than
another is sometimes describes as social deixis (Yule, (1996:10).
a. Spatial Deixis

The concept of distance already mentioned is clearly relevant to

spatial deixis, where the relative location of people and tings is being
indicated. Contemporary English make use of only two adverbs, „here‟
and „there‟, for the basic distinction, but in older texts and in some
dialects, a much larger set of deictic expressions can be found (Yule,
1996:12). According to Levinson (1983:70) place deixis concerns the
specification of location relative to anchorage points in the speech event.
We can know spatial deixis from the use of demonstrative pronouns such
as “this” and “that”. And also from demonstrative adverb of place such as
“here” and “there”. Spatial deixis is relative to the speaker‟s location.
Those are proximal term (near the speakers) and distal term (away from
speaker). Demonstrative pronoun “this” means that the object close from
the speaker’s location and ‘that’ means that the object far from the
speaker’s location.

b. Temporal Deixis
Temporal deixis using temporal form indicate both of time
coinciding with the speaker‟s utterance and the time of the speaker‟s
voice there are the present and the past. The present tense is the proximal
forms and the past tense is the distal forms. The form of temporal deixis
like now, then, yesterday, tomorrow, today, tonight, next weeks, last
weeks, and this week (Yule, 1996:14).

Time Deixis is also called as temporal deixis. Rankema (1993, p.

79) stated that time deixis is a reference to time relative to a temporal

 reference point and it is typically the moment of utterance. These language
resources are the adverbs of time: yesterday, tomorrow, now, then.3
Furthermore, Intrinsically Yule (1996, p.14.15) says that the basic time of
temporal deixis in English language is in the choice of verb tense.
According to him, English has only two basic forms, the present and the
past:

1. I live here now.

2. I live there then.

The present tense is the proximal form as in (a) and the past tense
form as in (b). Here, is a list referring some deictic items of Time Deixis
whose reference can only be determined in relation to the time of the
utterance in which they occur.

- This/last/next Monday/week/month/year.
- Now, then, ago, later, soon, before.
- Yesterday, today, tomorrow.
So, Time Deixis is an expression in relation to the certain point of time
when the utterance is produced by the speaker.

3. Function of Deixis

Definition of Yule‟s theory, the fumction of Deixis is a pointing. Pointing

here is to point thing or person as we called person deixis. The function of person
deixis is referred to the thing or person who is speaker in utterence. Person deixis
is divided into three parts they are first person deixis, second person deixis, and
third person deixis. The function of first person deixis is the word that referred to
the speaker him or herself as the sending the message. The function of second
person deixis is the word that referred to the addressee as the listener or received
the message. The function of third person deixis is the word that reffered to who is
neither speaker nor addresse. The function of spatial deixis is the word that

reffered or point the location of the speaker. It could be proximal form (close from
the speaker) and distal form (away from the speaker). And the last is the function
of temporal deixis is the word that referred to the time when utterance was done.

4. Movie

Movie is a series of moving pictures, usually shown in a cinema or on

television and often telling a story ( Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary,
Third Edition ). Movies, also known as films, are a type of visual communication
which uses moving pictures and sound to tell stories or inform (help people to
learn). People in every part of the world watch movies as a type of entertainment,
a way to have fun. For some people, fun movies can mean movies that make them
laugh, while for others it can mean movies that make them cry, or feel afraid.

Most movies are made so that they can be shown on big screens at movie
theatre and at home. After movies are shown on movie screens for a period of
weeks or months, they may be marketed through several other media. They are
shown on pay television or cable television, and sold or rented on DVD disks or
videocassette tapes, so that people can watch the movies at home. You can also
download or stream movies. Older movies are shown on television broadcasting
stations.

A movie camera or video camera takes pictures very quickly, usually at 24

or 25 pictures (frames) every second. When a movie projector, a computer, or a
television shows the pictures at that rate, it looks like the things shown in the set
of pictures are really moving. Sound is either recorded at the same time, or added
later. The sounds in a movie usually include the sounds of people talking (which
is called dialogue), music (which is called the "soundtrack"), and sound effects,
the sounds of activities that are happening in the movie (such as doors opening or
guns being fired). In the 20th century the camera used photographic film. The
product is still often called a "film" even though there usually is no film.

 A genre is a word for a type of movie or a style of movie. Movies can be
fictional (made up), or true, or a mix of the two. Although hundreds of movies are
made every year, there are very few that do not follow a small number of set plots,
or stories. Some movies mix together two or more genres.

5. Mad Max Fury Road Movie

1. Descriptive of the movie

Mad Max Fury Road movie is the action movie that produced by George
Miller and PJ Voeten and directed by George Miller as well. It officialy released
on 14 May 2015 in Australia and 15 may 2015 in USA. This movie uses a huge of
big, unique, and modern weapon and the place because it content almost 90%
about war and fighting. So, no wonder this movie earned $150 million for
production budget. However, the profit of this movie is $378.9 million from Box
Office.

 3. Synopsis of Mad Max Fury Road Movie

An apocalyptic story set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark

desert landscape where humanity is broken, and almost everyone is crazed
fighting for the necessities of life. Within this world exist two rebels on the run
who just might be able to restore order. There's Max, a man of action and a man
of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in
the aftermath of the chaos. And Furiosa, a woman of action and a woman who
believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert
back to her childhood homeland.The former policeman Max is captured by the
War Boys tribe, commanded by the Immortal Joe and assigned to be blood donor
for the Wat Boy Nux that is sick. Meanwhile Imperator Furiosa drives a tank
truck to collect gasoline for Joe. However her true intention is to flee from the
tyrannical Joe with his five women selected to breed hidden in the truck to her
homeland. Immortal Joe commands a party to hunt down Furiosa and Max is
chained to Nux's car. Furiosa heads the truck into a sand storm but Nux continues
to pursue her. After the storm, Max succeeds to escape from the car and brings
Nux chained with him. He sees Furiosa and the five wives and decides to flee in
their truck; but there is a secret to operate the truck and he teams up with Furiosa,
leaving Nux in the desert.

FINDING AND DISCUSSION

Eventually, all the explanation about deixis is already done the previous
chapter, the writer would like to present the data analysis of the movie by finding
and discussion.

A. Data Finding

This sub-heading presents the findings which derived from research

problem in which the first question concerned with the types of deixis and find the
meaning by the context of the sentences found in Mad Max Fury Movie.

1. Types of Deixis Found in Max Mad Fury Movie.

There are three main kinds of deixis, they are person, time, and place
deixis. In person deixis, it divided into three parts: first, second, and third person
deixis.

a. Person Deixis.

Person deixis is a word referred to the person being uttered. There are
three main kinds of this type, such as first, second, and third person.

1) First person (I, my, myself, mine)singular; (we, us, ourselves, our,
ours)plural.

Part 1 ( 00:08:19 )

Immortan Joe : Once again, we send off my War Wig to bring back
guzzoline from Gas Town and bullets from the Bullet
Farm!. Once again I salute my imperator.... Furiosa!

The utterence said by Immortan Joe. There was a first person deixis
‘I’. It referred to the speaker himself, Immortan Joe. Word ‘I’ in this

sentence is showed as the singular pronoun. Based on the context of the
movie, it referred to the speaker himself, Jack.

So, the function of deixis ‘I’ is the subject. He wanted the listener to know
that he as the owner of War Wig, Gas Town, Bullet Farm, salute his
imperator and he want to show his power.

Part 2 ( 00:08:32 )

Immortan Joe : it is by my hand you will rise from the ashes of this world!

The utterence said by Immortan Joe. There was a first person or

possessive adjective deixis, ‘my’. My referred to the speaker himself. It
able to include in person deixis because the word me is included as the
object in singular pronoun. Based on the context of the movie, he wants
the listener know that his hand is able to rise the people ( his followes )
from the ashes of this world. It also shows that he has a power and he
wants to make the people believe in his words.

Part 3 ( 00:59:26 )

Furiosa : we keep moving.

The utterence said by Furiosa. She is the main character of this

movie. There was a first person deixis, ‘we’. The function of the word we
is subject of plural pronoun. Based on the context of the movie, the word
‘we’ referred to the speaker and the other characters, they are : Max as the
main character and the wives of Immortan Joe. The speaker want to
emphasizes that they must moving forward because the immortan Joe’s
favorite wife fell to the under part of the Rig and the speaker thought that
she died . So, they did not have to stop but keep moving.

Part 4 ( 00:56:53 )

Immortal Joe : Stop the Rig, return my treasure to me and i, myself will
carry you to the gates of Valhalla.

 The utterence said by Immortal Joe. There was a first person deixis
‘myself’. Based on the context of the movie, the word ‘myself’ is referred
to the speaker himself. Based on the context of the movie, it is used to
emphasize that he really mean his words as a promised to the object which
is Nux ( War Boy and his worshiper ) and convinced the listener that he
will do what he just said. The speaker also believe that he will do his
words surely.

Old women : The men? Who are they?

Furiosa : They reliable. They helped us to get here.

The utterance said by Furiosa. There was a first person deixis ‘us’.
The fucnction of word ‘us’ is the object of plural pronoun. At the time the
speaker was saying that sentence, there are so many people around the
speaker, so, the viewer might be confuse about what was the exact person
that she referred to. Based on the context of the movie, the word ‘us’ refers
to the speaker and the Immortan joe’s wives. There was a possibility that
the speaker refers to the old women named Many Mothers around her
when she was speaking. The speaker clarified that they met the old women
because the men ( Max and Nux ) helped them.

2) Second Person
Second person(you). It is a deictic reference to a person or people
identified as addressee, such as:you, yourself, yourselves, your, yours.

Part 6 ( 00:40:28 )

Immortan Joe : Do not, my friends... become addicted to water. It will

take hold of you. And you will resent your absence.

 The utterence is said by Immortan Joe. The word ‘you’ was the
second person deixis. Te function of this word is as the object of plural
pronoun. Based on the context of the movie, word ‘you’ refers to all of the
people which is his followers. The speaker gave the warning to them to not
to be addicted to the water because they will resent about the absence of
the water by themselves.

Part 7 ( 01:26:44 )

Max : This is your way home.

The utterence is said by Max ( the main character ). The word

‘your’ is the second person deixis. The fuction of word ‘your’ is the object
of plural pronoun. Based on the context of the movie, word ‘you’ refers to
Furiosa, the wives, and Many Mothers. The speaker was showing the way
home (Green Place) to them. The speaker also implicitly explain to the
viewers that he just helped them to go to their place and it shows that the
place is not belongs to the speaker.

3) The third person singular (He, She, It). It is a deictic reference to a

referent not identified as the speaker or the addressee and usually imply
the gender that the utterance refers to. eg. he, she, they, him, himself,
her, herself.

Immortan Joe : Where is she taking them?

The utterence is said by Immortan Joe. There was a third person

deixis ‘she’. The fuction of word ‘she’ is the object of plural pronoun.
Based on the context of the movie, there is no clear object he refers to. At
that time, the speaker was arguing with Miss Gindy, there is no obvious
person that they were talking about. Based on the writer’s analysis, the
word ‘she’ refers to Furiosa, because on the movie, Furiosa as his
imperator, betrayed him by took a lot of his stuff and his wives as well.

Nux : He saw it.

The utterence was said by Nux ( the War Boy ). There was a third
person deixis ‘he’. The function of word ‘he’ is the subject. Based on the
context of the movie, Nux was in the Rig with Splendid ( the one of
Immortan Joe’s wives ). The viewer may be confuse about who is ‘he’ that
Nux was talking about. Based on the writer’s analysis, ‘he’ is refers to
Immortan Joe because at that time,

Part 10 ( 01:29:36 )

Immortan Joe : They are heading for the canyon.

The utterence was said by Immortan Joe. There was as third person
deixis ‘they’. The fuction of word ‘they’ is the subject. Based on the
context of the movie, the word ‘They’ refers to Furiosa, Max, the wives,
and Many Mothers. They were going back to the Citadel, the place that
they were escape from. It because there was no Green Place, everywhere
they go, they just found desert and salt. Max suggested them to going back
to Citadel. The risk of this decision is they have to fight with the speaker
and his troops.

Part 11 ( 01:48:24 )

Max : Keep her awake.

The utterence was said by Max. There was a third person deixis
‘us’. The function of that word is as the object of plural pronoun. Based on
the context of the movie, the word ‘her’ refers to Furiosa. The speaker
wanted the people around him, to kept Furiosa wake because at that time,
she was dying.

b. Spatial Deixis

Words and phrases used to point to a location (here,there, near that)are

the movie, the speaker wanted to show them that there was a high ground

c. Temporal Deixis

Temporal deixis using temporal form indicate both of time coinciding

with the speaker‟s utterance and the time of the speaker‟s voice being heard
(the hearer ‘now’). In English, there are two basic forms there are the present
and the past. The present tense is the proximal forms and the past tense is the
distal forms. The form of temporal deixis such as now, then, yesterday,
tomorrow, today, tonight, next weeks, last weeks, and this week (Yule,
1996:14). Here, is a list referring some deictic items of Time Deixis whose
reference can only be determined in relation to the time of the utterance in
which they occur.

- This/last/next Monday/week/month/year.
- Now, then, ago, later, soon, before.

listener back, on the other word, the speaker, warned Immortan Joe that
someday, there will be someone who beat him up.

The utterence said by Max. There was a temporal deixis ‘now’.

Word “now” here means for the time. The function of word is to explain
the same condition from in the past until at this time. Based on the context
of this movie, it described the same condition between the present and the
past. In the past, the speaker said that the War Boy took his blood and in
the present time or ‘now’, they took his car.
