Chapter 3 Research

This chapter outlines the methodology used in the study. The research will use a descriptive design and phenomenological qualitative approach to gather data from 10 grade 10 students at Southwestern University PHINMA through interviews and transcripts. The study aims to understand the relationship between math anxiety, lack of problem solving skills, and student performance in mathematics. Data will be collected at Southwestern University PHINMA in Cebu City from the 50 students enrolled in a single grade 10 class through random sampling. Research instruments to be used include interviews and tests to measure math anxiety and problem solving abilities.

CHAPTER 3

METHOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, research

environment, research respondents, research instruments, data
gathering procedure and the statistical treatment of the study.

Research Design

This research will use the descriptive design to gather

information about math anxiety and Lack of Problem Solving Skills
in connection with the Grade 10 Junior High School Students
Performance in Mathematics: A Case in Southwestern University
PHINMA. The descriptive design will give a specific reason and
outcomes among the Grade 10 students in JHS Department in
Southwestern University PHINMA. This also seeks to reveal the
student’s opinion regarding math anxiety and lack of problem
solving skills.

This will use phenomenology type of qualitative research. This

research type tends to gather data to an depth interview, transcripts,
voice recording and other types or other types/methods that must
be analyzed. The researchers find it very useful because it focuses
in the current problem that the students encounter. It may be the
key to formulate an appropriate assessment to the students’
concern.

Research Environment

The locale of this study was the Southwestern University

PHINMA, Villa Aznar Urgello St., Cebu City. It is one of the known
state college in universities in Cebu City. This school offers
complete primary, secondary, and tertiary education, with
exceptional machineries and facilities.

Research Respondents

The main respondents of this study were the Grade 10 Junior

High School students of Southwestern University PHINMA enrolled
in the school year 2019-2020. There was only one section
composed of around fifty (50) students and among them, ten (10)
students will be chosen through simple random sampling method.
The population of this study was comprised of the ten (10) students
that were being selected.

Performance in Mathematics: A case in southwestern
university.

Definition of Terms
The following terms were defined operationally:

Academic Performance- It is the dependant variable towards

the two independent variable w/c are the math anxiety and low
problem solving skills. It is defined as the product of a students
written works, task and etc. with or without interference. Also, it
refers to the average grade from first to second quarter of the
Grade 10 students in Mathematics.

Math Anxiety- It is an independent variable in this study that

refers to the student feeling tense or anxious in working with
number in mathematics. Also, it is an emotional problem and
characterized by intense nervousness before or during math test. It
is based to the mean scores of the students coping with math
anxiety.

Lack of Problem Solving Skills- It is an independent variable

appertain in this study that refers to the Grade 10 students lack of
abilities in terms of problem solving that correlates to Mathematics.
It is computed based on the mean scores of the students through
giving them set of mathematical problems.
