QUESTION 2
(P02, CO2, C3, C4)
a) Air at temperature of 45°C and 20% relative humidity is to be humidified adiabatically by
humidifier. Water is being fed to the system in order to increase the humidity of the air at
the outlet stream to 50% relative humidity.
i) Sketch and label the process flow diagram.
(2 marks)
ii) Determine the final temperature of the humidified air.
(3 marks)
iii) Determine the amount of water being fed to the humidifier to maintain the outlet
humidified air at 20 kg/min

b) The oxidation process of 1200 mol/h acetaldehyde production inside a reactor involves
with concurrent reactions as represented in equation 1 and equation 2. The first reaction
(R1) produces desired product whilst second reaction (R2) produces an acetic acid
(CHsCOOH) as by product.
Rt: CzHsOH (g) + 3 (g) > CHsCHO (g) + HzO (v)
R2: 2CHsCHO (g) + O2 (g) >» 2CHsCOOH (g)
The detailed flow diagram of the process is shown in Figure 3. All components at the
both inlet and outlet streams of reactor are in the gas phase. Given the Cp (J/mol-"C) of
specific components are: Ethanol (65.5), Acetaldehyde (54.7), Acetic Acid (66.5).
i) Determine the standard heat of reaction for both reactions.
(6 marks)
ji) Determine the total heat released during the oxidation process using heat of reaction
method

QUESTION 3
(P02, CO2, C6)
An adiabatic stirred tank shows in Figure 4 is used to heat 100 kg of 45 wt% glycol solution.
The tank is equipped with an electrical heater and overhead stirrer which delivered 3500 W
and 500 W of power, respectively. The glycol solution is initially at 15°C. The optimum
operational temperature of heating process was set at 90°C. The heating process is required
to be kept less than 2 hours in order to avoid glycol's degradation. Given the heat capacity of
solution is 3.54 J/g-°C
a) Derive an equation of heating process as a function of temperature versus time.

b) Predict the duration required for solution to reach 90°C when the heater delivers energy
in two conditions:
i) 100% of heater efficiency.
ii) 80% of heater efficiency.
Suggest the most appropriate energy to be supplied by the heater to maintain the
concentration of the solution at optimum condition and justify the reason.
