Micro Teach Lesson Plan
Objective: To teach the risks of using social media and what you can do to keep
yourself safe
Teaching Procedures:
Bellwork/Anticipatory Set: Please take out a sheet of paper and take 2:30 to
write down the last three things that you posted on social media. Would you be
comfortable if your entire family saw what you posted? Please be ready to discuss
with the rest of the class.
Aligned Information:
When it comes to the use of social media, there are positive benefits that
stem from it, surprisingly. Such benefits include staying connected with friends,
meeting new friends with shared interests, sharing art of music, and exploring and
expressing oneself (“Social Media and Teens, 2018). However, when it comes to
social media, there is a vast majority of negative risks that come with it compared
to the positive side. There was a recent survey conducted in the UK where an
organization known as the Royal Society for Public Health asked young
adolescents between the ages of 14-24 on how social media platforms have
impacted their health and wellbeing (Ehmke, N.D.). The survey’s results
discovered that Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram all led to increased
feelings of depression, anxiety, poor body image and loneliness (Ehmke, N.D.).
Another big danger when it comes to social media is cyberbullying. Thanks to the
use of social media, young adolescents can freely and easily say the nastiest
comments you would never hear them say in person (Ehmke, N.D.). This is
especially true for young girls; because according to clinical and developmental
psychologist, Dr. Donna Wick, she says, “Girls are socialized more to compare
themselves to other people, girls, to develop their identities, so it makes them more
vulnerable to the downside to all of this. We forget that relational aggression
comes from insecurity and feeling awful about yourself and wanting to put other
people down, so you feel better” (Ehmke, N.D.). When young adolescents are
offline, the golden standard is to get them involved in an activity that they are
interested in. It could be anything ranging from sports to music to participating in
their community and so forth. When young adolescents begin to feel good about
themselves and learn what they can do, based on their skills and talents, instead of
worrying about how they appear and what they own, then they become much
happier and more prepared to succeed in real life.

keep in mind about the use of social media? Please take 3 minutes to discuss with
your shoulder partner and be prepared to share with the rest of the class.
Exit Ticket: Create a dos and don’ts list about social media use (you may include
thing not in this presentation) Be ready to share with the class.
