GILBARCO VEEDER-ROOT DISPENSERS
INTRODUCTION
This manual tells the characteristics of the Phoenix Dispensers and provides instructions for correct
programming, operation and maintenance.
Instructions for site preparation for installing the Dispensers should be informed by the
corresponding responsible company.
The fueling station is an area with potentially explosive atmospheres containing flammable vapors,
high pressure and tension.
The GILBARCO VEEDER-ROOT Dispensers are rigorously tested and approved by the
competent bodies. However, before performing installation procedures, operation and/or
maintenance on a Phoenix dispenser, carefully read the information in this manual for
your safety and the safety of the other people present at the station.
COPYRIGHTS
This manual is the property of GILBARCO VEEDER-ROOT and may not be reproduced in whole
or in part, without prior written permission of this company.
DISPENSERS
Certified by UL Brazil and approved by Inmetro, Phoenix Dispensers are assembled with
international standard components and benefit from a project that meets the most subtle and
demanding needs, providing a perfect operation and maintenance cost. These Dispensers have a
flawless finish and high resistance, which may be established even after a long time of use.
The PHX Series Dispenser (low hose), PMH Series Dispenser (middle hose) and PHD Series
Dispensers (high hose) have advanced technology and features that make a difference in the
handling and control of supply. They have displays of 1 "that make it easier to read the data, and a
unique stainless steel keyboard for predetermining and managing, which has unmatched durability.
Another differential is the warranty. PHX/PMH and PHD Series are warranted against
manufacturing and design defects from the date of issuance of the invoice, provided one adheres
to the Product Warranty Term.

the Dispensers for commercial use, except the display, which informs only "Liters".
NOMINAL FLOW
The term NOMINAL FLOW is understood as the tested and approved flow, at the Dispenser
certification process.
But in the station, the Dispenser flow is directly related to the conditions of
installation, operation and cleaning of the entire suction line, that is, from the
fuel tank to the pump.
The NOMINAL FLOW is measured in liters per minute (ppm) and is available in the following
versions:
NOZZLES Position
0 = SIDE NOZZLE
1 = SIDE NOZZLE
2 = FRONT NOZZLE WITH 2 SIMULTANEOUS
REFUELINGS
MAIN FEATURES
STRUCTURE
The structure of the Prime dispensers, specially designed for this product is assembled with
anodized aluminum profiles that fits perfectly.
The attachment of the profiles is made with steel rivets, which eliminates the need for any welding.
This structure, with excellent and super light mechanical strength, has a strong resistance against
time action, which is even more relevant to the coastal regions, where the probability of corrosion
is greater, due to the atmospheric salinity.
PANELS
The PHX-Prime dispenser, and the front and side panels are made of aluminum.
In the PHD- Prime dispenser, the front panels and lower sides are made of aluminum, while the
front panels and upper sides are made of carbon steel. The canopy, that is, the dispenser fascia
board is also made of carbon steel
Regardless of the material, the panels receive electrostatic powder coating, which eliminates the
risk of failures in the application and offers the most efficient surface coverage. For being extremely
resistant, this painting preserves the original dispenser appearance for a long time.
The panels are painted according to the standard of painting (visual identity) of each customer and
the paint quality is guaranteed, regardless of the color.
Customers can also customize the panels of their dispenser with its visual identity. The logo and/or
layout of communication are applied on adhesive.
The lock of the panels is tongue-operated with plastic key that comes with the product. The
Stratema provides 2 keys for low pump and 4 keys for high pump. In case of loss, the customer
can buy it in a specialized shop.
ENGINE
The electric engine, by Gilbarco (BR-Ex d II T4Gb) is the component responsible for triggering the
pumping unit. It is explosion-proof and has a frequency of 60 Hz, three-phase voltage of 220 Vac
or 380 Vac, nominal current of 3.5 or 2 A respectively, as well as the cable glands.
ENGINE CONFIGURATION
The pumping unit, also known as rotating, is the component responsible for the fuel pumping and
suction.
Dispensers with 50 lpm, 75 lpm, 90 lpm or 140 lpm flow have a Stratema ST-UBE model pumping
unit. Compact (monobloc) of gears with built-in air eliminator, easy access bypass valve and safety
valve (self-seal).
Dispensers with 200 lpm or 210 lpm flow have a Stratema model ST-UBP-210 pumping unit, with
vanes.
Dispensers with 200 lpm or 210 lpm flow have a Stratema model ST-UBP-210 pumping unit, with
vanes.
Features:
• Filtering: beyond the usual filter installed on the suction inlet, the pumping unit has an extra filter
between the chambers,, which further reduces the possibility of passage of solid particles for the
dispenser(s) block(s) meter(s) , protecting more efficiently all of its components
• Bearings: the set of graphite bearings and the armored bearing as a support to the rotor shaft
reduce the wear of the pumping unit, and hence the need for maintenance.
• Air eliminator: it has the basic function of removing the resulting air bubbles from the fuel suction
process, namely, prevents the customer from receiving air with the fuel. Its system with 2 cameras
reduces the possibility of fuel leaking by the breather, even in high flow dispensers - the system
has been designed for operation with high performance.
• Use MN AXS33 model toothed belt, provided by Gates.
• In the diesel dispensers, the return of the filtration equipment must be installed in the same
position used in alcohol dispensers, for the densimeter return.
Drawing showing the return connection of the densimeter return / filtration equipment
The “crazy” gear spins clockwise on the rotor, forcing the pumping unit input fuel flow (low pressure)
to the output, when it reaches high pressure.
DOUBLE CAMERA
The Stratema pumping unit has 2 chambers, which allows a better performance in separating air
and gases. The capacity of the pumping unit Stratema pumping unit is 2 liters.
The primary chamber has 1 filter, 1 internal damper and 1 pressure reducer.
The secondary camera has 1 float for removing gases and 1 anti overflowing.
Double Chamber: greater efficiency in separation and removal of air and gases
FILTERS
The pumping unit has 2 filters with stainless steel mesh, for double filtering the fuel. The filters are
located in an easily accessible location for cleaning and maintenance.
“CRAZY” GEAR
The "crazy" gear has a graphite bushing, which provides better performance and longer life to the
set and, therefore, a lower maintenance index.
The check and relief valve is incorporated into the pumping unit.
BYPASS VALVE
The bypass valve serves to maintain a certain pressure inside the pumping unit, which is
established by the valve adjusting screw.
When the dispenser is off, the bypass valve remains closed. When the pump is switched on, the
pumping unit internal pressure increases and opens the bypass valve until reaching the established
pressure.
Bypass valve
This valve prevents the fuel dispenser from overflowing, thus preserving the station and, above all,
the environment.
This is a photo of the "exploded" pumping unit, which details all of its components.
MEASURING BLOCK
The basic function of a measuring block is to measure the amount of fuel pumped.
The Gilbarco measuring block enables full security of supply, measurement accuracy and very low
maintenance costs.
Dispensers with flow 50 lpm, 75 lpm, 90 lpm or 140 lpm have Gilbarco C+ measuring block, with a
positive displacement with 4 pistons. The block has stainless steel shirts that increase its lifespan.
Dispenser with 200 gpm or 210 lpm flow have ST-MED-210 model measuring blocks, of lobular
gears.
Dispensers with 400 lpm flow measuring blocks have ST-MED-400 model of lobular gears.
Regardless of the flow, the measuring block used in electronic dispensers have electronic
calibration and the measuring block used in mechanical dispensers, have mechanical calibration
(manual, via adjustment wheel).
C+ Gilbarco measuring
Upper view of a measuring block Bottom view of the measuring block
block
Features:
• Gilbarco Identification: engraved on each cover of the meter block, high relief.
• Fuel Flow: rapid flow of fuel that enters from above and exits from below the measuring block,
reduces the possibility of product remaining in the pack for long periods. This minimizes corrosion
and prevents dirt accumulation on the block basis, increasing its useful life.
METER C+ DIAGRAM
ADJUSTMENT WHEEL
The adjustment wheel is used for manual calibration of mechanical dispensers. The clockwise
wheel spinning decreases the volume of fuel and, in anti-clockwise it increases the volume of fuel.
PULSER
The pulser is responsible for the conversion of the fuel volume measured by a meter block for
electrical pulses. It is also responsible for the transmission of these pulses to the electronic
dispenser head.
In Gilbarco meter block, the pulser is coupled to the meter head with an alignment of the shafts.
This integration results in a more secure system, which benefits the supply and prevents possible
violations at the pump.
The pulser has explosion-proof enclosure, as the requirements for products that operate in
potentially explosive atmospheres
PULSER
Features:
• Reading of pulses: by optical sensing. It has 1 disc with 50 holes. Each 2 complete revolutions
made by the disc are equivalent to reading 1 liter of fuel.
• Wiring:
- 4 x 0,50 mm² shielded cable
SOLENOID VALVE
The solenoid valve is the device responsible for the release or fuel supply interruption for each
nozzle.
Features:
• Explosion-proof.
• It has 2 stages, high flow and low flow.
NOZZLE BOOT
The nozzle boot, also known as receptacle is auto-on type and is designed exclusively for use in
Gilbarco dispensers.
Auto-on means to simply remove the fueling nozzle from the rest position so the dispenser is
automatically turned on. This is because the nozzle boot has an electromagnetic sensor (Reed
switch), which monitors the presence or absence of the nozzle.
Rear view of the nozzle boot Front view of the nozzle boot
The Fuel outlet elbow is located between the dispenser and the hose. It is aluminum-made and, for
greater protection, it receives electrostatic powder paint.
Fuel display is an optional accessory of the dispenser, which allows one to verify the presence of
air or bubbles in the fuel. It is aluminum-made and is located between the dispenser and the hose,
in place of the Fuel outlet elbow.
The dispenser series plate is attached to the side of the dispenser. In it one finds all information
relating to the dispenser recorded, as the model, maximum and minimum flow rates, serial number,
manufacturing year, Inmetro number, ordinance and identification nozzle(s).
Such information is critical to identifying the dispenser whenever necessary, as when opening the
a technical case for preventive or corrective maintenance.
Install the appropriate circuit breakers in the electrical panel, to be housed in an easily accessible
location and at a safe distance from the equipment. Clearly identify the breakers with the help of
labels.
We recommend the following values of magnetic overloading circuit breakers for connections:
AUTOMATION SYSTEM
CONNECTION BOX
The connection box is an explosion-proof enclosure and meets all requirements of the standard
NBR 5363, which regulates the specification of electrical equipment for potentially explosive
atmospheres, which is protection type "D".
The connection box must have two sealing units, installation of electric power supply input cable
and communication cable with the automation system, and 3 cable glands, for output of the power
cables (engine and electronic head ) and communication.
CABLE GLANDS
All cables (from the connection box, engine, solenoid valve, pulser and guard peas), which are
forwarded to the electronic head, go through polyamide cable glands with minimum IP54 safety,
fulfilling the requirements of classified corresponding zone.
The cable glands are installed in the hydraulic chassis cover and at the base of the electronics
head, which are the lower and upper limits, respectively, of the air gap.
ELECTRONIC HEAD
The electronic head is assembled with steel boards. The chrome parts are treated with a
galvanizing bath. And the painted parts are given a phosphate-based treatment and electrostatic
powder paint for increased protection.
DISPLAY
The display board material varies by the dispenser model: in PHX-prime and PHD-Prime
dispensers, it is made of aluminum.
However, regardless of the material, the display receives electrostatic powder paint according to
the standard of painting (visual identity) of each client. The paint quality is guaranteed regardless
of color. The display still gets a polycarbonate adhesive for identification of "Total Payable", "Liter"
and "Price per Liter" displays, which also comes with the standard painting of each client.
It is on the display that the keyboard to predetermination liters or values and the electromechanical
totalizer are located.

TOTALIZER OR FINISHER
The electronic pumps have 2 totalizers, an electronic one and an electromechanical one, for each
nozzle or product, for double checking.
Mechanical pumps have just the electromechanical totalizer for each fueling nozzle. This totalizer,
inviolable and cumulative, record volumes of up to 99,999.9 liters.
The reading of the electromechanical totalizer, which is located on the dispenser display is made
only on the dispenser.
Since the reading of the electronic register can be made directly on the dispenser through the
management keypad or remotely by means of the automation system.

The hydraulic interface board is used only with the 468 ST-ELT / 09 board.
The hydraulic Interface Board is the board used in-Plus PHD dispensers, sixfold and eightfold
models to expand the capacity of the CPU activations, for the use of more nozzles from 2 to2.
E.g:
• Sixfold dispenser = 1 468 ST-ELT / 09CPU + 1 68 hydraulic interface board
• Eightfold dispenser = 1 468 ST-ELT / 09CPU + 2 68 hydraulic interface board
Main functionalities:
• It detects the signals generated at the wrists and monitors the occurrence of errors.
• It detects whether there is interruption in the electronic connections with the pulsers.
• It forwards the electronic commands of activation of valves and contactors of the engine for the
CPU board.
• It forwards the signals emitted by the nozzles sensors to the CPU board.
• It contains control relays in solid state, used to activate the contactors and solenoid valves.

COMMUNICATION BOARDS
Current Loop.
The technology used for communicating Gilbarco Veeder-Root Dispensers with concentrators is
the Current Loop.
The goal was to develop a communication board with relatively low cost, easy installation and
maintenance in relation to the boards used in dispensers by other brands.
Instead of voltage, this type of interface uses the current to transmit data, which is considered ideal
for long distance communications in hostile environments, such as petrol stations, for its inherent
insensitivity to electrical noise.
In the active circuit is the power source, called Constant Current Generator. When Gilbarco Veeder-
Root manufactured its first fuel dispenser, it established the following specification:
- All dispensers are passive.
- The Concentrator must be active.
Thus, Gilbarco Veeder-Root placed the responsibility to provide the current necessary for the
proper functioning of communications in the Concentrator, and therefore defined the following
standard:
Gilbarco Veeder-Root adopted 45 mA to ensure that the impedance at each dispenser is the least
possible, and thus ensure maximum noise immunity
The LED RX indicates the reception of data sent by the hub to the dispenser CPU.
The LEDTX indicates transmission of data sent by the dispenser CPU to the concentrator.
The LED R1 is in its normal state of operation, if it is off. If it is lit, it indicates that the connection
cable between the interface and the concentrator is inverted.

RECOMMENDATIONS
ELECTRICAL FACILITIES
DISPENSER ENERGYZING
The electronic set of the nominal supply voltage is 220 Vca (variation of more or less15%). For
sites with 380 Vac, connect one of the phases to the neutral.
ELECTRICAL BOARD
The electrical panel of the engines and of the electronic set must be independent of the other power
supplies of the station, dedicated, for example, to lighting, convenience store, car wash and other
equipment such as elevator to exchange oil, compressor, air conditioning, etc.
We recommend that each sector or station store has its independent electrical panel, and that the
distribution of AC power grid loads is "balanced", avoiding overheating of the power distribution
cables and circuit breakers, which can affect the proper functioning of electronic set of the dispenser
during a fall or return of electricity.
Warning!
• The placement of protection against electrical discharges is the responsibility of the station owner
or the corresponding Distributor.
• The efficiency of protection against electrical discharges depends on proper grounding, which will
send overloads to the ground wire.
• Where it is established that one or more pieces of the dispenser have been damaged due to an
electrical discharge, such parts lose workmanship warranty.
DISPENSER GROUNDING
The grounding of the dispenser must have ground resistance lower or equal to 5 Ohms. One should
place as many rods as necessary to achieve this value.
Each dispenser must have its own grounding (a rod for each dispenser), which must be connected
to the grounding / stem of the other dispensers of the station, if any.
The grounding rod must be "cooperweld", copper-made with steel core. It is, at least, 2.5 x 1/2 "in
diameter and is connected by a single flexible wire of, at least, 10 mm².
We recommend one NEVER connects the neutral to the grounding of the dispenser.
ELECTRICAL NOISE
The electronic set of Phoenix Dispensers, like any precision equipment controlled by
microprocessor, is subject to malfunction due to noise and/or electrical interference, mainly caused
by:
• Deficient grounding connections (terminals / loose connectors or with bad contact) or improper
grounding.
• Amendment in the AC network cables or dispenser power cables.
• Other equipment powered by the dispenser power grid.
GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
• When installing the dispenser on the island, make sure that it is properly leveled.
• To prevent the engine and the dispenser CPU from blowing, make sure the local voltage is
recommended for the engine and the electronic dispenser head.
• If balance cannot be achieved, or if the network is too unstable, use an isolation auto-transformer.
• It is recommended that the grounding is less than or equal to 5 Ohms.
• Never connect the ground wire to the neutral busbar.
• Make sure that the ground wire is connected to the recommended location, in the connection box.
• Never energize the dispenser with a fueling nozzle out of the nozzle boot (receptacle)
• Do not stretch the engine belt beyond the normal not to increase the current, avoiding the abrupt
stop of the dispenser motor.
• Avoid the pumping unit to spin anti-clockwise. Remove the belt, start the motor and make sure
the direction is correct - clockwise.
• Make sure that nozzles and hoses are properly installed and make sure that there are no leaks in
the connections.
• During the start up of the dispenser, let go by the dispenser at least 50 liters of fuel.
• If these procedures are not met, there may be loss of manufacturing warranty.
2. After isolating the area, the technician must protect himself/herself with all
EPIs (personal protective equipment) applicable and separate the adequate
tools to the procedure to be performed.
3. Then the technician must check whether the circuit breaker of the dispenser
is off. Before starting the maintenance, the technician should also make sure
he/she eliminated all possible causes that cause accidents.
• Collect and save all materials used, such as tools, equipment and support
signaling.
• Clear and leave the organized site. Warning: If there are cloths and / or wet
fuel tows, such materials should be disposed of in a specific place, as required
by regulatory authorities, with respect to safety and the environment.
• Search the responsible for the station - track manager or general manager -
to show him/her the service performed and the site in order.
Warning!
Return to the station to repair the same defect is costly to the maintainer company and argues
against the professional capacity of the technician responsible for the maintenance badly
performed.
