Definition
● A code of ethics is a guide of principles designed to help
professionals conduct business honestly and with integrity.

● A code of ethics document outlines the mission and values of

the business or organization, how professionals are supposed
to approach problems, the ethical principles based on the
organization's core values, and the standards to which the
professional is held.

● A code of ethics, also referred to as an "ethical code," may

encompass areas such as business ethics, a code of
professional practice.
Business Ethics
Business Ethics
1) Business ethics refers to how ethical principles guide a
business's operations.
2) Common issues that fall under the umbrella of business ethics
include:
a) Employer-employee relations
b) Discrimination
c) Environmental issues
d) Bribery, insider trading, and
e) Social responsibility.
3) While many laws exist to set basic ethical standards within the
business community, it is largely dependent upon a business's
leadership to develop a code of ethics.
Principles of Code Ethics
6 Principles of Ethics

The ethical principles that must be followed are the principles

of :

1. Justice
2. Autonomy
3. Beneficence
4. Nonmaleficence
5. Fidelity
6. Veracity
PRIMARY PRINCIPLES

Justice is a principle with four components: distributive justice; respect for the law; rights
and retributive justice.

Autonomy is the capacity to think, decide and act on the basis of such thought and
decision, freely and independently

Beneficence emphasizes the moral importance of doing good to others; in the context of
bioethics it refers to the promotion of what is best for the patient.

Non-maleficence is often referred to as the opposite side of the coin to beneficence. It

states that we should not harm patients. It differs from beneficence in the scope of its
application: we have a prima facie duty not to harm anyone.
ADDITIONAL PRINCIPLES

Fidelity refers to meeting the patient‟s reasonable expectations regarding respect,

competence, subscribing to a professional code of conduct, following policies and
procedures honoring agreements made between clinician and patient.

Veracity is defined as being honest and telling the truth and is related to the principle of
autonomy. It is the basis of the trust relationship established between a patient and a
health care provider. This allows patients to use their autonomy to make decisions in their
own best interest.
Types of Code of Ethics:

1. Compliance Based
2. Value Based
Compliance based Code of Ethics

● Compliance-based codes of ethics not only sets guidelines for conduct but
also determines penalties for violations.
● It is developed to ensure that the business and its employees comply with
all laws and regulations in an appropriate manner.
● Three key elements include the prevention, detection and punishment of
non-compliant behavior.
● Compliance based ethics code has to do with obligations where you are
obligated to do the ethical thing.
Value based Code of Ethics

● A value-based code of ethics addresses a company's core value system.

● It attempts to encourage good, ethical behavior rather than focusing on
monitoring and punishing errors or bad actions.
● It may outline standards of responsible conduct as they relate to the larger public
good and the environment.
● Value-based ethical codes may require a greater degree of self-regulation than
compliance-based codes.
Importance of ethics for Professionals
Importance of Ethics for Professionals
● Regardless of size, businesses count on their management staff to set a
standard of ethical conduct for other employees to follow.
● When administrators adhere to the code of ethics, it sends a message
that universal compliance is expected of every employee.

Important: While a code of ethics is often not required, many firms and
organizations choose to adopt one.

Code of Ethics
Example 1: Microsoft
Empower every person and every organization on the planet to
achieve more

Microsoft’s commitment to corporate responsibility and integrity guides everything we do

as a company, and defines the work of our ethics and compliance program. We have high
ethical standards governing the way we conduct our business, standards that we also
apply to our suppliers and business partners. Our business practices and standards reflect
our commitment to making a positive impact around the globe. We demand such high
standards from ourselves and our partners to preserve trust with our customers,
governments, investors, partners, representatives, and each other, and because it is the
right thing to do.
Overview of Microsoft’s Ethics Program

Microsoft has built its compliance and ethics program on three pillars: Prevention, Detection,
and Remediation.

Prevention:
To prevent compliance issues from arising in the first place, we focus on
promoting a culture of ethics and integrity. We do this through creating a
culture of compliance throughout our company, and through our Standards of
Business Conduct, policies, and training, while also using data analytics, risk
assessment, proactive investigations, third party vetting, and other compliance
efforts to minimize potential risks.
Overview of Microsoft’s Ethics Program
Detection:
We detect potential compliance issues in several ways, including testing by our Internal
Audit group, monitoring through our compliance analytics program and by our Controls &
Compliance teams, investigating concerns reported by employees and others, and
analyzing trends through our Office of Legal Compliance. Compliance is a team effort at
Microsoft. Every employee is responsible for upholding our standards, fostering the culture
of compliance in their Microsoft team and partners, and reporting concerns.

Remediation:
We assess the root cause of problems, and continually enhance our controls and
processes to minimize the risk of recurrence. This process is a core component of
Microsoft’s compliance program and growth mindset culture. We discipline employees who
violate our policies and standards, regardless of their level, and we stop doing business
with partners and suppliers who don’t meet our ethical standards.
