ENG3C Culminating Task

The classroom will be transformed into a mock poetry slam competition. You
are to create a spoken word piece using the social justice issue that you chose for
your concrete poem assessment. This piece will be performed in a mock poetry
slam.

You must make reference to:

- 3 Historical and current racialized individuals that were and are


changemakers, the voices that began bringing attention to your social issue

- The present status of the social issue today. What does it look like today? Is it
any better or worse? The same?

- How this issue affects and/or impacts you and/or people important to you

- One potential solution OR mention a solution that is already in progress

Poetry Slam Rules:

- Cannot exceed 3 minutes and 10 seconds

- Must be an original piece; will be on lookout for plagiarism

- No props
Success Criteria:

To successfully complete my culminating task, I will:

❏ Ensure that my chosen social issue is something I care about


❏ Use all of the available class time to fulfill all of the requirements for this
assignment
❏ Develop feelings of comfort and confidence in my spoken word skills and
capabilities
❏ Have a good understanding as to how I will present my piece by having
consolidated with my teacher and peers
❏ Feel much more comfortable and safe to participate with my peers in this
activity
❏ Demonstrate respect towards my peers by listening and encouraging them
when they are presenting
❏ Feel the positive energy within the classroom that real poetry slams entail
❏ Feel capable of participating in a real slam competition if I’d like in the future
