What Is This Module About

This module is designed to make you clearly understand
the concepts of graphs and how they relate to your daily
activities. It is a self –learning kit intended to help ALS learners
gather, organize, analyse ,explain and present data. You will
also learn how to read, interpret data from a graph, table or
chart.
This module has two lessons:
Lesson 1 – Kinds of Graph
Lesson 2- Reading and Interpreting Graphs

What Will You Learn From This Module

After studying this module, you should be able to:
 identify the different kinds of graphs
 construct graphs, tables, and chart to describe organize
and present data clearly
 read and interpret data from the graph, table or chart

Let’s Recall
You know the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand
words?” Yes I am talking about graphs. Different types of
graphs are used for different situations. For this reason, it helps
to know a little bit about what the available graphs are. Many
times the kind of data is what determines the appropriate
graphs to use.

Line graphs are used as a way of communicating the

relationship between two variables over time. The vertical
axis should be the dependent variable (recorded numerically)
and the horizontal axis should be time.
Bar graphs are used to compare products, populations or trials
in one area of interest. The horizontal axis is a list of constants,
and the vertical axis is the dependant variable which is
recorded numerically.

Pie charts are best used for comparing the parts to the
whole. They parts are often shown as percentages of the
whole and should add up to 100%. Multiple pie charts can
be used to compare populations to each other.

Pictographs, also called pictograms, are diagrams that show

and compare data by using picture symbols. Each of these
symbols corresponds to a specific quantity and is repeated a
number of times.
Axes
Graphs have two axes, the lines that run across the bottom and
up the side. The line along the bottom is called the horizontal
or x-axis, and the line up the side is called the vertical or y-axis.

 The x-axis may contain categories or numbers. You read it from

the bottom left of the graph.
 The y-axis usually contains numbers, again starting from the
bottom left of the graph.
The numbers on the y-axis generally, but not always, start at 0 in
the bottom left of the graph, and move upwards. Usually the
axes of a graph are labelled to indicate the type of data they
show.
Lesson

Graph

A graph is a picture of numerical data. You can see graphs in

books, magazines, newspapers, advertisements, reports , even in
your respective Community Learning Center etc.
Whatever way you choose to draw your graphs, once you have
knack of reading them, you will almost certainly find that the old
saying is right: a picture really can tell a thousand words.
Whether a graph is worth a thousand numbers is a moot point,
but it is certainly an effective way of showing several numbers
together, and demonstrating the relationships or differences
between them.

Let’s Think About This

The Sublian Festival was initiated by the city Mayor

Eduardo Dimacuha on July 23,1988. This has become annual
celebration of Batangas City showcasing Batangueno’s
devotion to the town’s patron Sto.Nino.

Have you experienced joining the Sublian Festival? Can

you estimate the number of people who watched the said
festival last year?
Please study the graph.

UB JAPMES SBC WAWA
What is the title of the graph?
Which school has the least number of participants?
Which team ranks second?
What is the difference in the number of participants of Julian
Pastor Elem School and Wawa Elementary School?
Now, do you know how to interpret the data presented in
the graph? What conclusion can you draw based on the
analysis on the data presented above?

Let’s Learn
When we look for the information to help us make
important decisions, we often find the information in the form of
graphs. A lot of newspaper regularly use graphs to help readers
to compare amounts or see trends.
A bar graph has a title and labels for horizontal and vertical
data.
A pictograph uses pictures to show relationship between two
sets of data and uses legend to tell the number equivalent to
each shown picture.
Pie graphs are used to show the percentage of a quantity in
each of the several categories .It can also be used to easily
visualize the ratio of one category to another.
To draw a pie graph, just follow these steps:
1. Know:The whole or references data and parts of the whole.
Ask: What is the whole ?What are the parts?
2. Compute the ratio of each section to the whole by using the
formula :Part/Whole
Ask: What percent of the whole is each part?
3. Compute the degrees for each section by using the formula:
Number of degrees in1 revolution x percent?
4. Draw the sections or parts of the circle graph at the
12o’clock position on the circle. Arrange the sections in a
clockwise direction based on their sizes, that is from largest
to largest.

Let’s Try This

Solve each problem.
1. 80 ALS learners from JAPMES learning center were
surveyed to find out to their favourite snacks in the school
canteen. The results were shown on the pie graph below.

Favorite Snacks of ALS Learners in SBC

banana cue hotcake waffles pasta suman

a. How many pupils chose pasta?_____
b. How many pupils chose hotcake_______
c. What percent of the pupils did not chose suman?______
d. How many more learners chose banana cue than
hotcake?_______

Let’s Review

A. A lot of complaints were received by the Transportation

Development Regulatory Office (TDRO) regarding traffic

jam at Batangas City. One morning, Mrs. Sales instructed

her learners at Saint Bridget College to conduct a traffic

survey by recording the number of each type of vehicle

passing at Barangay Balagtas during rush hour. The results

of the survey are presented below:

50
No. of Vehicle

Bus Car Truck Tricycle Motorcycle

How many cars passed during ALS learner’s survey?

1. Which type of vehicle had the least number in their survey?

2. How many buses passed during their survey?

3. How many more motorcycle than tricycles passed during

their survey?

B. A local weather station recorded the inchesof rainfall for

several months. Answer the questionsbased on the pictograph

below.

Inches of Rain
May
June
July
August
September
October
November

- 1 inch of rain
1) Which two consecutive months had the fewest recorded
inches of rainfall?
If multiple consecutive months tied, write them all.________________
2) What was the mean, or average number of inches of rainfall
per month?
Round your answer to the nearest hundredth if
necessary.__________
3) How many inches of rain were recorded in both October &
May?
______________
4) Which two consecutive months had the largest recorded
inches of rainfall?
If multiple consecutive months tied, write them all.___________
5) Did more rainfall occur during the months prior to August or in
the months
following August? Or did an equal amount of rain occur in
each set of months?
______________
6) How many inches of rain were recorded in both September &
June?
______________
7) Was more rainfall recorded in the months of August &
September or in
the months of July & August? Or was an equal amount
recorded?___________
Let’s Remember
Key Points

1. We identified bar graph, pictograph, circle graph and line graph;

2. We identified bar graph as picture representing information using bar
columns
A vertical bar graph looks like this:

A horizontal bar graph looks like this:

3. We identified pictograph as the graph that uses pictures to show relationship
between two sets of data and it has a title and a legend

Boys

Girls

Legend: = 4 pupils
Number of Pupils

The legend tells the number represented by the picture. If half of the symbol is
used, it is equivalent to half of the number represented by the symbol.

4. We defined a circle graph as a presentation of data using a circle; it can be

used to compare parts of a whole; it has labels and title, it is sometimes called
pie graph because the parts look like pie slices,

5. Data can be presented in fractional or percentage form, the whole circle being
equal to 1 or 100%;
6. We connected points and created a line graph which shows a relationship
between data. An upward direction of a line in the graph suggested an increase,
a downward line means a decrease; and

Decrease

Increase

7. We discovered that a graph is a creative way of presenting data. It can be ea

sily understood without writing too many wordy data.
Let’s See What You Have Learned

A. Study this graph carefully, and then answer the questions
