Handout Solvingapempe

This document provides guidance on solving equations using the addition property of equality (APE) and the multiplication property of equality (MPE). It defines APE as adding the same number to both sides of an equation preserving equality, and MPE as multiplying both sides of an equation by the same non-zero number preserving equality. Examples are provided to demonstrate using each property to solve equations, along with exercises for students to practice.

SOLVING EQUATIONS USING ADDITION PROPERTY OF EQUALITY (APE) AND
MULTIPLICATION PROPERTY OF EQUALITY (MPE)
Addition Property of Equality Multiplication Property of Equality
If the same number is added to both sides of an equation, the If both sides of an equation are multiplied by the same number,
results on both sides are equal in value. Thus, for any real the results on each side are equal in value. Thus, for any real
numbers a, b, and c, 𝑖𝑓 𝑎 = 𝑏, 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑎 + 𝑐 = 𝑏 + 𝑐. numbers a, b, and c with c≠ 0, 𝑖𝑓 𝑎 = 𝑏, 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑐𝑎 = 𝑐𝑏.

Example 1: Solve for x in 𝑥 − 5 = 15. Example 1: Solve for x in 3𝑥 = 6

Solution: 𝑥 − 5 = 15 Solution: 3𝑥 = 6
𝑥 − 5 + 5 = 15 + 5 Add 5 to both sides 1 1 Multiply both sides of the equation by the
