Analysis of Gasketed Flanges For Preload and Operating Conditions

This document presents an analysis of gasketed flanges under preload and operating conditions. It discusses the objectives as analyzing gasketed flanges to calculate stresses using ASME methods and FEA, and comparing results for varying flange thickness and number of bolts. The methodology describes discretizing the structure into finite elements and deriving element equations to solve for unknown values. The expected outcomes are determining the best flange thickness and number of bolts configuration to minimize combined shear stresses under given conditions.

INTRODUCTION

Flange is a component used to connect tubular members in piping

systems, a flange is a disc, collar or ring.

The purpose of this is providing increased support for strength,

blocking off a pipeline or implementing the attachment of more
items.

Flanges are affected by the varying forces, pressure, temperature

and an environmental effect because of which leakages occurs in the
connection. So sealing of a connection must be analyzed.

Basic components of flange connection:

 Flange
Gasket
Bolts 3

LITERATURE SURVEY
T. Sawa [1]
 analyzed the distribution of contact stresses which governs the
sealing performance on a three body contact problem, using an
axis-symmetrical three dimensional theory of elasticity.
 The effects of the stiffness and the thickness of raised face metallic
gaskets on the contact stresses and the effective gasket seating width
are shown by numerical calculations.
 Moreover stresses produced in hub, load factor and max stress
caused in bolts are analyzed.

Muhsen Al-Sannaa and Abdul Malik [2]

presented numerical results obtained using Finite Element Analysis
(FEA) in studying large diameter welded neck steel flanges under
different loading conditions.
 The results showed the effect of the clamping pressure, internal
pressure, axial end load, temperature effect. 5
 Clamping pressure is a determinate factor for the sealing condition.
Yasumasa Shoji and Satoshi Nagata [3]
 Developed a method to model non linear gasket by using the
elements available in ANSYS
Concepts and the procedure of the modelling were introduced.

M.Abid and D.H.Nash [4]

 Made a 2D non linear finite element study for both gasketed and
non-gasketed bolted flange pipe joints.
Recommendations were made for a best fit flange model for static
load condition with ‘zero-leak’ sealing in a flange joint.
Presented the results of a parametric study of the behaviour of
metal-to-metal contact flanges that have different surface profiles.

OBJECTIVES
By referring to the literature survey we have found out these are the
objectives of our work:

 To calculate the combined shear stress (x-y direction) and preload

force in a gasketed metallic flange by ASME method.

To analyze the ASME results by FEA approach.

To analyze the gasketed metallic flange for combined shear stress by
varying the flange thickness by FEA.

To analyze the gasketed metallic flange for combines shear stress by
varying the number of bolts by FEA.

To compare the results of the flange for different flange thickness
and different number of bolts.

METHODOLOGY
GENERAL DISCRIPTION OF FINITE ELEMENT METHOD:
 The finite element method is a numerical method used to obtain
approximate solutions of boundary value problems in engineering.
In this method given problem or domain in converted or divided into
smaller regions called elements.
These elements are interconnected at specified joints called nodes.
These are points where the properties are to be determined for a
element.

STEPS INVOLVED IN FINITE ELEMENT METHOD:

 Discretization of the structure.
Selection of proper interpolation or displacement model.
Derivation of element matrices and vectors.
Assemblage of element equations to obtain equilibrium equation.
Applying boundary conditions. 8
Solution of all unknown values.
STEPS INVOLVED IN FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS:
 Pre-process or modelling the structure.
 Analysis.
Post processing.

9
EXPECTED OUTCOMES
 Obtain a best suited flange thickness and number of bolts
required under the given conditions.

Flange configuration which has the least combine shear stress

induced.

This can help in the research and production of flanges which

are best suited for different conditions.
