Flow and Types of Flow

Flow refers to liquid moving on earth's surface or through pipes. There are various types of flow including steady or unsteady; laminar or turbulent; compressible or incompressible; rotational or irrotational; internal or external; uniform or non-uniform; and one, two, or three dimensional. Key distinctions include whether properties change over time (steady vs unsteady), if particles move in distinct paths or irregularly (laminar vs turbulent), and if density is constant or varies (compressible vs incompressible).

Flow and Types of Flow

Flow:
Liquid running on the surface of earth or in the pipe or conduit is called flow.

Types of Flow:
Following are the types of flow:

1. Steady Flow
2. Unsteady Flow
3. Laminar Flow
4. Turbulent Flow
5. Compressible Flow
6. Incompressible Flow
7. Rotational Flow
8. Irrotational Flow
9. Internal Flow
10. External Flow
11. Uniform Flow
12. Non-uniform Flow
13. One Dimensional Flow
14. Two Dimensional Flow
15. Three Dimensional Flow

1. Steady Flow:-

In which the fluid Characteristics Like velocity, pressure, density , etc. At

a Point do not change with time.

2. Unsteady Flow:-

In which the fluid velocity , pressure or density at a point changes with

respect to time.

3. Laminar Flow:-

In which the fluid particles move along well defined paths or stream line.

4. Turbulent Flow:-

Fluid moves in very irregular paths or zig – zag Way. velocity at a point
fluctuates.

5. Compressible Flows:-

In which the density of the fluid changes from point to point. The
density is not constant for the fluid.
6. Incompressible Flows:-

In which the density of fluid changes from point to point. the density is
constant for the fluid.

7. Rotational Flow :-

In which the fluid particles while flowing along stream lines, Also
rotate about their own axis.

8. Irrotational Flow:-

In which the fluid particles while flowing along stream lines, do not
rotate about their own axis.

9. Internal Flow:-

When fluid is flowing inside a closed surface (like duct or pipe) it is

called internal flow.

10. External Flow:-

When the fluid is flowing outside (on the surface of a body) it is called
external flow.

11. Uniform Flow:-

In uniform flow, the rate of flow (and other properties) of fluid remains
constant with location.

12. Non-uniform Flow:-

In non-uniform flow, the rate of flow (and other properties) of the fluid varies
with location.

13. One Dimensional Flow:-

In which the flow parameter such as velocity is a function of time and

one space co-ordinate only.

14. Two Dimensional Flow:-

In which the velocity is a function of time and two rectangular space

co-ordinates.

15. Three Dimensional Flow:-

In which the velocity is the function of time and Three mutually

perpendicular directions.
