Malba will open its 2019 calendar of exhibitions with Mundo propio. Fotografía moder-
na argentina 1927-1962 [Inner World, 1927-'62] a broad panorama of the avant-
gardes in Argentine photography over three decades. Curated by Facundo de Zuviría,
the show brings together a selection of 200 works – most in prints from the period –
by Horacio Coppola, Grete Stern, Annemarie Heinrich, Anatole Saderman, Sameer
Makarius, Juan Di Sandro, Pedro Otero, Hans Mann, and George Friedman, among
other well-known photographers who paved new paths in the field of our
nation's photography, and with other highly original work by less celebrated figures.
Although photography existed in our country since the mid-19th century, with the first
portraits in daguerrotypes and documentary or costumbrista shots (scenes of customs
and manners), this exhibition shows the emergence of the avant-garde in Argentine
photography starting in 1927, and the break it marked with the documentary and picto-
rialist paradigms that had dominated the era.
Beginning in the 1930s, the photographers represented in this exhibition endowed
their work with a modern thinking that aspired to place photography on equal footing
with other forms of artistic creation. In this sense, modernity revealed the relationship
with forms of expression such as literature and design, and brought about the creation
of the first photo clubs and other appropriate settings for exchanging ideas, which fos-
tered further reflection on the discipline.
In the curator's words: “In the thirties, modern photography comes into being in Argen-
tina and seeks to establish itself on an equal plane with the other arts, though it does
so in a language of its own. In 1931 Coppola returns to Buenos Aires as a fulcrum for
his formal schemas; with his return from the Bauhaus with Grete Stern in 1935, they
became the clearest exponents of that modernity. At the same time appears Anatole
Saderman, with his photos of plants, and Annemarie Heinrich as the indisputable
master of the portrait. Four huge figures in the decade."
This unique moment in local photography comes about to a great extent thanks to the
immigration process our country underwent, when many photographers born in
Europe arrived with their technical knowledge and advanced ideas that helped enor-
mously to establish our cultural identity.
In conjunction with this exhibition, Malba will be publishing a bilingual catalog in
Spanish and English, reproducing the works in the exhibition, graphic and documen-
tary material from the era, and anthology texts not currently in circulation, as well as a
chronology and biographical notes on the artists.
