Nanyang Technological University School of Civil and Environmental Engineering CV2011 Structural Analysis 1 Tutorial Sheet 10

This document contains the solutions to 8 structural analysis problems from the textbook questions for Tutorial Sheet 10. The problems involve determining displacements, slopes, or deflections of joints in trusses and beams using the method of virtual work. Key information provided in the solutions includes the displacement direction and amount. Materials are assumed to have a Young's modulus of 200 GPa, and cross-sectional properties are provided where needed to solve the virtual work equations.

Structural Analysis 1
Tutorial Sheet 10

Q1. (Textbook question 9.15, page 363)

Determine the vertical displacement of joint C of the truss. Each member has a cross-section area
of A=300 mm2 and E=200 GPa. Use the method of virtual work.

Ans: ΔCv = 4.91 mm (downward)

Q2. (Textbook question 9.17, page 363)

Determine the vertical displacement of joint A. Assume the members are pin connected at their
end points. Take A=1200 mm2 and E=200 GPa for each member. Use the method of virtual
work.

Ans: ΔAv = 1.03 mm (downward)

Q3. (Textbook question 9.19, page 363)

Determine the vertical displacement of joint A, if members AB and BC experience a temperature
increase of ΔT=1100C. Take A=1200 mm2 and E=200 GPa. Also, α=12.0(10-6) / 0C.

Ans: ΔAv = 12.7 mm (upward)

Q4. (Textbook question 9.20, page 363)

Determine the vertical displacement of joint A, if member AE is fabricated 12mm too short.
(Figure-Q3)

Ans: ΔAv = 26.8 mm (upward)

Q5. (Textbook question 9.29, page 388)

Determine the slope and displacement at point C. Use the method of virtual work. E=200GPa
and I = 480(106)mm4.

Ans: θC = 0.00146 rad (clockwise), ΔC = 3.75 mm (downward)

Q6. (Textbook question 9.40, page 389)

Determine the slope A and displacement at point A. Assume C is pinned. EI is constant. Use the
principle of virtual work.

Ans: θA = 9/EI kN.m2 (anti-clockwise), ΔA = 22.95/EI kN.m3 (downward)

Q7. (Textbook question 9.42, page 389)

Determine the displacement at point D. EI is constant. Use the principle of virtual work.

Ans: ΔD = 109/EI kN.m3 (downward)

Q8. (Textbook question 9.58, page 391)

Use the method of virtual work and determine the horizontal deflection at C. EI is constant. There
is a pin at A. Assume C is a roller and B is a fixed joint.

Ans: ΔC = 9.62/EI kN.m3 (rightward)
