Design, Fabrication and Evaluation of Plastic Bottle Rope Weaver

This document describes a study to design and fabricate a machine that weaves plastic bottles into rope. The machine aims to address the large plastic waste problem in the Philippines by recycling plastic bottles. Specifically, the study seeks to: 1) design and build a rope weaving machine with key parts like a rotator frame, slider, rope holder, and cutter; 2) test the machine's efficiency, production time, and repeatability; and 3) evaluate the strength of the plastic bottle rope compared to commercial ropes. The results could help reduce plastic waste, provide jobs, and save the environment. The scope is limited to making rope from water and soda bottles using a functional weaving machine.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Plastic pollution is one of the biggest problems that many countries are

experiencing. According to the article The Countries Polluting the Oceans the Most (Niall

McCarthy, 2019) it is estimated that 1.1 to 8.8 million metric tons of plastic waste

enters the ocean from coastal communities each year. As of 2018, about 380 million

tons of plastic is produced worldwide each year. From the 1950s up to 2018, an

estimated 6.3 billion tons of plastic has been produced worldwide, of which an

estimated 9% has been recycled and another 12% has been incinerated. To sum up,

we still have approximately 79% of these plastic garbage that are not properly recycled.

In the UK alone, more than 5 million tons of plastic are consumed each year, of which

only an estimated one-quarter is recycled, with the remainder going to landfills.

The Philippines has among the highest trash collection rates in Southeast Asia

yet it’s the world’s third biggest source of plastic leaking into the ocean. According to

the journal “Science” (Eric Hand, 2015), the Ocean Conservancy singled out that the

Philippines is one of five countries from where majority of plastics originates, including

China, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand. The country generates 2.7 million metric tons of

plastic garbage each year, or an estimated 43,684 tons of garbage daily, including 4,609
tons of plastic waste, according to government data. Twenty percent or 521,000 tons of

which end up in the ocean.

The massive increase in population also contributes a great impact in the

continuous increase on the amount of plastic garbage in our country every year.

Especially those who lives in the squatter areas who doesn’t know how to used plastics

correctly and how to segregate it or where to put these plastics after used. They are

just throwing it through the canals, sidewalks or even in the seashores and most of

these plastic were being burnt and causes air pollution. These plastic garbage became a

big threat in the marine life.

Plastic is now one of the country’s top pollutants in rivers, canals, and other

waterways. Some of these plastics flow directly through the oceans. This plastic

garbage causes clogging in our waterways. These plastic garbage blocks the waterways

and causes floods in most of the rural areas in Manila and other places here in the

country. As the production and consumption of plastic materials increases, the struggle

in proper disposal of these materials also increases.

One of the place here in the Philippines who has the biggest problem in plastic

garbage’s is the Manila Bay. Approximately 61.9% of these waste was made of plastic.

According to a waste audit (Sebastian, 2018), plastic bags and plastic bottles are one
the most common type of garbage found in Manila Bay. As these problem arises, the

researches arrived to a machine that weaves a rope out of plastic bottles to lessen

these plastic problems.

Objectives of the study

The researcher aims to design and fabricate a machine that used to weave a

recycle plastic bottle. With the specific objectives as follows:

1. To design and fabricate machine that will weave a rope that will come from

plastic bottles with the following parts:

a. Rotator Frame

b. Slider

c. Rope holder

d. Cutter

2. To test the machine according to the following parameters:

a. Efficiency

b. Production Time

c. Repeatability
3. To be able to evaluate the strength of the plastic bottle rope compared to the

commercial ropes on the basis of tensile strength.

4. To analyze cost effectiveness and cost efficiency

Significance of the study

The result of this study will be beneficial to the following:

The environment. This study will lessen the plastic bottles waste that are thrown

everywhere that harm the environment.

The government. This study will help the government in how to decrease the

plastic bottle waste around the country.

The people. They will be able to know how the plastic bottle that are found in

everywhere can be turn it into a rope that can use in specific job. This study also helps

the people to have a job or how to recycle a plastic bottle instead of thrown it in

garbage.

Scope and limitations

This study deals on the recycling of non-biodegrade plastic waste to lessen the

increase of plastic garbage.

This study will only focus on using properly functioning rope weaver machine and

plastic bottle cutter as the main parts of the machine. It will be used to make a rope

that is made of a plastic bottle such as soda bottle, water bottles, etc…

This study will be conducted in A.Y. 2019-2020 at Pangasinan State University,

Urdaneta City Campus.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are defined within the context of the study for the purpose

of clarity.

Weaver. Is an instrument that makes rope by means of weaving

Plastic. a synthetic material made from a wide range of organic polymers such as

polyethylene, PVC, nylon, etc., that can be molded into shape while soft and then set

into a rigid or slightly elastic form.

Rope. a length of strong cord made by twisting together strands of natural fibers.

Cutter- an edge tool for cutting, this will use to cut the bottle into strip.
