MLA Formatting

Writing has become such an important part to our culture. Whether it be for an

assignment, an email to a friend, or writing down historical documentation. Within schools there

became a time where writing needed to be evaluated. They decided there had to be a uniformed

format to which people had to write. Especially when it came down to essays that needed to have

research within them. That’s when MLA was created.

MLA stands for Modern Language Association, MLA for short. What they did is create a

format that people followed to create a paper that was easy to follow and understand. Almost like

a universal language, but for writing. MLA allows writers to properly cite, title, label, number,

and include information that won’t lead to plagiarism.

Overall, the MLA format is a safety net for all students and writers. It allows us to write

freely without the fear of plagiarizing and it has a uniformed format that all students across the

country can use.

Lesson Plan

September 10, 2019

Instructor/Teacher: Jordan Cross

Grade Level: Kindergarten Mathematics

Lesson Title: Comparing numbers

Time Needed: 45 Minutes

Standard:

 6. Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less

than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using

matching and counting strategies.

Objectives:

 Students will be able to correctly count each group and compare the

differences.

 Students will be able to understand greater than, less than and equal to and

what each one means.

Materials needed:

 Wooden blocks
Cross 12

 Plastic containers

 Pencil and paper

 Projection board

Discussion/online interactive:

1. Discuss that the symbols have names. Less than <, greater than > and equal

to =. Use the tip that less than looks like and L e.g. <ess (write on board for

demonstration).

2. Discuss that you read the whole inequality, naming numbers and symbols

from left to right, just like they would with any given sentence. Read a few

out loud with the class. 9<10 (9 is less than 10). 6 > 5 (6 is greater than 5).

3. Allow students to watch a video on comparing numbers (alligator

technique).

Activity: After the video finishes, hand out a worksheet that goes over greater

than, less than, and equal to. Allow the students to use the wooden blocks for a

hands-on experience. Have the students use the alligator technique to figure out

which is which while they answer the questions.

Check for Understanding: At the end of the day have flash cards handy, when

students leave have them answer if the card says a number is greater than, less

than, or equal to another.
