School as a Learning Environment

It was November 15, 2018 when we started our first actual

observation in accordance to our FS1 subject. At Padre Valerio
Malabanan Memorial School, we observed everything that is related
to students learning process. The principal told us to fill in everything
that corresponds to our target and goal.
As I entered the school campus I noticed that many of the
facilities are under construction. Despite of the noise around, still
regular class is continuous happening. The learning materials that is
available in schools are library and computer laboratory. The
materials that are present there are arranged and classified according
to its subject matter. They have the guidelines and procedures in
terms of borrowing instructional materials. They are free from dust
and moisture. The resources are suitable to the needs and interest of
the learners. There are also management at their school canteen.
They have signs attached for students to follow. They also have an
area for students to wash their hands and for brushing teeth. The
classroom is not that wide but it is all organized by the teachers for
the students to be comfortable. Each classroom has its own comfort
room. The principal’s office is clean and very accommodating. It is
free from pollutions. Papers and documents were arranged and
stored in proper places.
Learners’ Characteristics and Needs

The learners characteristics and needs come in a variety of

aspects. Learners are not all the same, based on my observation; I
see different kinds of learners. There were those learners who were
talkative, silent, naughty, active, loner, happy and so many things.
Each has their own unique way that makes them as an individual.
Their needs also differ, each kids has their own. There are those
kinds who are lack of skills than the others. There are those fast and
slow learners. Learners seem to possess different characteristics and
needs is a big challenge to a teacher especially with patience needed
and techniques to get the students full attention to stay focus during
class discussion.
Learners’ Characteristics Learning Activities

Today’s learners are wealthy in terms of access to media

and communication. Padre Valerio Malabanan Memorial School, as
an educators have seen firsthand the benefits of technology in the
classroom. Technology has a positive impact in the education
process. Learners prefer technology because it makes learning more
interesting and fun. Subjects that students deem challenging or
boring can become more interesting with virtual lessons.
A typical school day at PVMM, inside the classroom
students are all gathered and did their usual daily routines. They
will be having their flag ceremony. First, they sang our National
Anthem followed by a prayer then the Panunumpa ng Katapatan sa
Watawat ng Pilipinas and the Panatang Makabayan. After, they
actively sang the Calabarzon March song and cheerfully danced the
song “Baam” of a Korean artist in preparing for a special number
in an event at their school.
As I observed that the number of the students is 30 to be
exact, 18 girls and 12 boys. Most of them are Roman Catholic. As
the discussion starts, the interaction between learners and the
teacher is present. Learners asks most of the time the teacher about
something they did not understand. There are few who’s not truly
engaged with the activity. The teacher asks the students some
question about their topic and most of the learners cheerfully
participate. In everything that the learners done well, the teacher
shown that she is really proud of her students.
Individual Differences and the Learning Process

As I observed the grade two pupils there were students who

were really active during class discussion and there re silent type
and really shy to involve themselves so they just keep quite. The
student in this class are friendly, respectful, cheerful but somehow
sensitive.
In classroom that I observed there are students who can
manage already their own by being responsible to their assigned
tasks but there are some students who are just waiting for the
teacher’s instructions and reminders to stop doing certain things
which will be destructive to their classmate attention. The students
in this class can handle, manage and accomplished easy task and
there are some that needs guidance and assistance of their teacher.
They lend their senses every time the teacher is conducting a lesson.
That is why, they can answer the question of their teacher when
asking them a certain question.
Perceived Roles of a Teacher

1. How do you handle your students equally despite of their

individual differences and abilities they have?

 By using method and techniques like question and answer

method or by group activities where they can show and use
their talent to perform well and to motivate them to do better
next time.

2. How do you manage to maintain the organization in your

classroom?

 By giving the leaners assigned task everyday to be responsible

and also with the help of their parents in maintaining the
cleanliness and orderliness of the classroom.

3. What strategies you use to manage the behavior of your

students?

 An effective strategy I use is being strict when it comes to class

discussion because I want them to strive hard to ensure they
participate and understand the lesson.

My Reflection:

As what I have learned during the interview it is important to

be knowledgeable and have patience to be able to handle the
different types of learners. Being strict during class discussion is one
good factor to impose discipline to the students to be responsible and
have self-control. Having a good parent-teacher relationship and
communication is another good factor to encourage the leaners to
study. A positive environment encourage the learners to keep
motivated to do much better to enhance their abilities.

REFLECTIONS:

My first task was to have a ‘tour’ around Padre Valerio

Malabanan Memorial School (PVMMS) and look into their
available facilities that will support effective learning environment. I
knew instantly that PVMMS is one of the fortunate schools that
provide maximum learning and development opportunities to
schoolchildren.
The Principal’s Office looks very inviting and well organized.
They also have a Multimedia Room with computers where practical
skills are nurtured. The school canteen offers mouth-watering
snacks!
The way that a classroom is arranged communicates very
important messages to the children, how the classroom will be
utilized, how it is to function as a learning environment. Books and
other interesting materials are neatly displayed in such a way that
allows children to use them frequently and correctly. Bulletin
boards contain children’s works and attractive pictures related to
topics of study and in formations about class activities – this will
help children perceive that this classroom is a place for learning and
fun, and their work is valued because it is displayed to be share with
others.
In teaching, the role of a teacher is not only to talk, teach,
record grades and submit it to the authority. The main purpose of
teaching is focused on the learners. They are the center of our
instructions that is why we must know their nature and how they act
in school.
School life is a personal adventure to each child. A school that
is pleasant and provides comfort is a second ʺhome sweet homeʺ
where he looks forward going to.
