ME5205 : Theory of Vibrations : Assignment 3

Systems with Multiple Degrees of Freedom

Date of submission : 6 November 2019

October 25, 2019

1. Write the equations of motion for the system shown in Figure and determine its natural frequencies and
mode shapes.

2. Determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the system shown in Figure.

3. For the system shown below, determine the natural frequencies as a function of n.

4. Assuming small amplitudes, set up the differential equations of motion for the double pendulum using
the coordinates
q shown in p
Figure. Show that the natural frequencies of the system are given by the
equation ω = (g/l)(2 ± (2))

1
Determine the ratio of amplitudes x1 /x2 and locate the nodes for the two modes of vibration.
5. A torsional system shown in Figure is composed of a shaft of k1 stiffness a hub of radius r and moment
of inertia J1 , four leaf springs of stiffness k2 , and an outer wheel of radius R and moment of inertia J2 .
Set up the differential equations for torsional oscillation, assuming one end of the shaft to be fixed. Show
that the frequency equation reduces to

ω 4 − (ω11
2 2
+ ω22 + ( JJ21 )ω22
2
)ω 2 + ω11
2 2
ω22 =0

6. Choose coordinates x for the displacement of c and θ clockwise for the rotation of the uniform bar shown
in Figure and determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes.

7. A rotor is mounted in bearings that are free to move in a single plane as shown in Figure . The rotor is
symmetrical about O with total mass M and moment of inertia J0 about an axis perpendicular to the
shaft. If a small unbalance mr acts at an axial distance b from its center 0, determine the equations of
motion for a rotational speed ω.

8. To simulate the effect of an earthquake on a rigid building, the base is assumed to be connected to the
ground through two springs Kt for the translational stiffness, and Kr for the rotational stiffness. If the
ground is now given a harmonic motion Yg = YG sin(ωt), set up the equations of motion in terms of the
coordinates shown in Figure.

9. For the system shown in Figure , W1 = 100 kg and the absorber weight W2 = 25 kg. If W1 is excited by
a 2.3 kg cm unbalance rotating at 1800 rpm, determine the proper value of the absorber spring k2 .What
will be the amplitude of W2 ?

10. In a certain refrigeration plant, a section of pipe carrying the refrigerant vibrated violently at a com-
pressor speed of 232 cpm. To eliminate this difficulty, it was proposed to clamp a spring-mass system to
the pipe to act as an absorber. For a trial test, a 1 kg absorber tuned to 232 cpm resulted in two natural
frequencies of 198 and 272 cpm. If the absorber system is to be designed so that the natural frequencies
lie outside the region 160 to 320 cpm, what must be the weight and spring stiffness?
