Van Gogh created Starry Night in 1889 just thirteen months before his
death when he was staying in an asylum at Saint-Remy. Starry Night is

Van Gogh was a huge fan of nighttime and his passion for this was
depicted in Starry Night and a number of other nocturnal canvases such

Amedeo Clemente Modigliani was an Italian Jewish artist. He died at

the age of 35, unrecognized and unappreciated. Only after his death,
Modigliani’s oeuvres achieved success. Fifteen years of his life were
dedicated to sculpture, but from a very early age Amedeo dreamed of
becoming a painter. He was a talented student who understood art in his
own way. His unique perception and desire to break the rules of fashionable
movements provided an important basis for his style.

Here Modigliani shows his firm friend posed gracefully, her seated
body in its yellow dress forming lithe curves against the scarlet background.
Later in life, Czechowska vividly recalled sitting for Modi as he drank cheap
brandy, sang, lapsed into Italian and, eventually, fell so far into the act of
painting that he became oblivious to the presence of another human being.
And then, there she was on canvas, left with " ... the impression of having
the soul laid bare and of being in the strange position of being able to do
nothing to disguise her feelings.".
