A User-Oriented Design Approach for the New Gattaran Public Market with Communal Park

Abstract

Public markets are confronted with various challenges in terms of its infrastructure,
affordability, convenience, access to healthy food supply and the profitability of unhealthy
foods (2009. Public Matters + South LA, Healthy Eating Active Communities or HEAC).
Problems such as limited storage, limited floor space, poor/non-existent marketing, poorly
functioning refrigeration units, not properly maintained, lacks proper ventilation, improper
location of the edifice, sanitation, security and safety, hinders the profitability of the
commercial hub.
Within these busy hubs of commerce and trade, the presence of open and green spaces,
such as communal parks, is needed. Having a park enriches the life of every community
(2011. Rejuvenating Neighborhoods and Communities Through Parks, National
Recreation and Park Association or NRPA). These are essential components that add up to
a livable, sustainable and a healthy community.
The New Gattaran Public Market with Communal Park provides a forum of a healthy
interaction between the busy aisles of the public market and the relaxing ambience of the
