INPUT CONTROLS - Regulate Input of Resources and Are Described On Most Job Fulfillment Requests

The document discusses input validation techniques for payroll system data and processing controls to ensure reliable data. It lists various types of input validation including: (1) alphabetic checks on employee names, (2) check digits to validate employee numbers, and (3) validating marital status and number of dependents. It states that unless adequate controls are implemented, advances in computer technology can reduce a firm's ability to detect errors and fraud. It identifies three categories of data controls: (1) input controls, (2) processing controls, and (3) output controls to ensure reliable data during system design.

(25 points)

Identify the types of input validation techniques for the following inputs to the payroll system. Explain
the controls provided by each of these techniques.

System automatically calculates wages based on number of hours worked and how much each
employee has made, pays them in a form of a direct deposit after withholding income taxes.

Input Validation (Data Validation) is a systematic check that rejects or accepts data based on a set of
rules. It is a basic software coding practice that is performed before processing user input or data from
untrusted systems.

firm’s ability to detect errors and fraud. Therefore, one of the critical responsibilities of the
management team in firms where computers are used is the security and control information service
activities.

During the design stage of a system, information system controls are planned to ensure the reliability of
data. A well-designed system can present both intentional and unintentional alteration or destruction
of data. These data controls can be classified as (1) input controls, (2) processing controls, and (3) output
controls

Required:

For each of the three data control categories listed, provide two specific controls and explain how each
control contributes to ensuring the reliability of data. use the following format for your answer.
