1.1 Background

In learning English, there are many things that must be known in advance, one of which is the
parts of the spoken word or in English called Parts of Speech.

This paper will discuss the nouns and modifiers (showing time, day, and description of
events) which are the subject of English language study, because through this one can clearly
convey their intentions. The unit of language that we are familiar with before arriving at the
sentence level is noun (noun) and words, phrases, or clauses in English that function as
adjectives (adjectives) and adverbs (adverbs) that describe other words or groups of words. it is a
basic learning or basic structure that we must learn in order to better understand the procedures
for speaking English well and smoothly. And also with questions which means questions and
answers or asking questions to others, even that is also very important in using everyday English.

3. PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
1. to find out the understanding of grammar review.
2. to find out the scope of grammar review.

A. NOUN
a. Definition of Noun
Noun (noun) is everything that we see or can talk about and which shows people, things,
places, plants, animals, months, professions and so on. For example: pen, December, Sunday,
Jogjakarta, reading, cats, and others. In a sentence, noun can be used as the subject of the
sentence, the object of the verb, and also the object of the preposition or preposition.

b. Countable Noun
Countable Noun is a countable noun, the opposite of Uncoubtable Noun is a thing that cannot
be counted. Countable nouns have a singular and plural forms can also be used on singular or
plural verbs. Included in countable nouns include names of people, names of animals, sizes,
places, and everything that can be seen and counted. Examples are: paint, book, pen, and bag.

Countable nouns can be divided into two forms, namely:

1. Singular Nouns are nouns that are singular.
Examples are: book, sister, mango, pencil, knife, fly, family, and others.
2. Plural nouns are plural nouns.
Examples are: books, sisters, pencils, mangoes, knives, and others.
To form plural nouns there are certain ways that must be considered,

that is :
a). A noun in the singular form if it becomes plural by adding s or ice to the singular noun.
example:
Singular
Plural
Quill
Pens

4
Dog

b). If the noun ends with the letters s, sh, x, ch, and o, then the noun is added to the letter ice.
example:
Singular
Plurar
Tomato (Tomato)
Tomatoes (Tomatoes)
Box
Boxes

c). If the noun ends with the letter o which is preceded by a death letter, then the plural form is
added to ice.
example:
Singular
Plurar
Buffalo (buffalo)
Buffaloes (buffalo)
Nigger (nigger)
Nigger (nigger)

d). If the noun ends with the letter y which is preceded by a death letter (consonant), then y is
changed to i, then added to ice.
example:
Singular
Plurar
City
City
Cities

5

e). If the noun ends with the letter y which is preceded by the plural hidufmaka then only adds s
and y does not change.
example:

Boy

f). If the noun ends with the letters f and fe, the plural f and fe are changed to ves.
example:

h). Some nouns that only change the letters in the plural (exceptions).
example:

i). Nouns which are always in the singular.

example:

j). Nouns that are always in the plural.

example:

C. Uncountable Noun
Uncountable noun is a noun that cannot be counted. Included in the uncountable noun include:
1. Various kinds of abstract nouns: beauty, knowledge, weakness, advantages, and others.
2. Materials or substances that have very small parts: rice, sugar, salt, sand, and others.
3. Languages: English, Javanese, and others.
4. Liquids that can change depending on the contents: water, coffee, milk, etc.
5. Food that can be made into various forms: bread, meat, cassava, and others.
Uncountable noun can be used as countable noun if we put quantity information before the noun.
Example:
 a glass of water: a glass of water
 a cup of tea: a cup of tea
Uncountable Noun:
Not considered to be singular or plural but requires singular form of verbs. In uncountable nouns
there is no addition of the unit ‘’ a ", which indicates that an object is a single object, or the
addition of‘ ‘-s / es’ ’to show an object is called plural (because there are no singular or plural
forms).
Example:
 ‘’ Your bread is rotten. ”
Uncountable nouns can be added with the words little / a little, much, and a large / small amount
of
Example:
 ‘’ I need a little bread. ’’
You can express an uncountable noun in units (either one or more) through an uncountable
expression.
Example:
 ‘’ I need two bars of soap. "
 'Would you get me four slices of bread?'

8
 She ’She wants a slice of bread.’ ’

UNDERSTANDING MODIFIER
Modifier is a word, phrase or clause in English that has the function as an adjective or adverb
that explains another word or group of words. In English, the word or group of words described
is known as Head. The following explanation:
• Function as adjective (can be simple adjective, adjective phrase, clause, participle or infinitive):
explain noun
Function as an adverb (can be simple adverb, adverb phrase, clause, prepositional phrase or
infinitive): explain verb, adjective or other adverb.

Modifiers that appear before Head are called Premodifiers, while modifiers that appear after
Head are called Postmodifiers. Below are examples of sentence premodifiers and postmodifiers
with the word 'detective' as Head:
• Premodifiers
- Hercule Poirot is a famous detective
• Postmodifiers
- The detective with big glasses solves the most baffling cases

SAMPLE MODIFIER
1. As adjective
• She found a chocolate put on my bag
- ‘Put on my bag’ (participial phrase) functions as an adjective explaining ‘chocholate’ (noun)
• The magazine that Rena has read is very interesting
- ‘That Rena has read’ (adjective clause) functions to explain ‘the book’ (noun)

2. As an adverb
• He plays violin so beautifully
- ‘So beautifully’ (adverb phrase) functions to explain ‘plays violin’ (verb)

9
• When you went to the school, she came
- ‘When you went to the school’ (adverb clause) answered the question "When did she come?"

CLASSIFIER
In the world of writing word orders, modifiers are also called classifiers. When learning
English, maybe you are more familiar with modifiers because of their adjectives and adverbs, but
noun can also function as a modifier known as a classifier.
Example Classifier:
Mrs. Andini sells shoes at the store. It is a shoe store.
- The word 'shoe' first, is a pure noun used as the object of the verb 'sell', so it is allowed to add
's' as a plural noun.
- The second word ‘shoe’ is a noun that functions as a modifier, or called an adjunct noun, so
that ditambahkan s ’cannot be added as a plural form.
