2. INTRODUCTION
Online examinations (e-examinations), are the examinations conducted through the internet or
in an intranet (if within the Organization) for a remote candidate (s).
These examinations are conducted as open-book type examinations. Candidate is given a
limited time to answer the questions and after the time expiry the answer paper is disabled
automatically and answers is sent to the examiner. The examiner will evaluate answers, either
through automated process or manually and the results will be sent to the candidate through
email or made available in the web site. Today many organizations that are found in abroad
conducting online examinations worldwide successfully and issue results online.
There are advantages and disadvantages in online examinations. The main advantage is that it
can be conducted for remote candidates and evaluation of answers can be fully automated for
MCF(matching, choosing and fill in the blanks) questions and other essay type questions can be
evaluated manually or through automated system, depending on the nature of the question s and
the requirements. Also online examinations can be conducted at any time and does not incur
higher cost as traditional exam scenario as there is no paper work involved(e.g.: printing exam
papers, prepare paper admissions etc) , there is no invigilators, also no need of arrangement of
exam centers. When comparing
with traditional exam scenario the cost for an online examination will be almost zero after the
online exam system is establishment and if maintenance cost is not considered.
The disadvantage of the e-examination is the inability of invigilating. There are methodologies
used in these examinations, when registering candidates and presentation of questions, so that to
test candidates knowledge and skills. However with a limited time, candidate is not capable of
totally depend on the reference materials or a supporting person.

2.1 Background

Hawassa University (HU) was established at Hawassa in April 2000.Since 1976 the different colleges
of HU had been operational starting with the college of Agriculture. The University has been formed by
merging three colleges in Southern Ethiopia:

 Awassa College of Agriculture (ACA),

 Wondegenet college of forestry

 Dilla college of Teacher education and health sciences and

HAWASSA UNIVERSITY

 Main campus

The university has since upgraded its capabilities, adding new colleges, institutes and departments,
programs and research facilities. Currently, HU is actively engaged in expansion activities to increase its
intake capacity. As part of this, the University has got 61 hectares of land from Administration of
Yirgalem Town, and has started construction of buildings to expand the existing programs and to launch
new ones.

From the upgraded campus, main campus is the one. In this campus there are many faculties like
technology faculty, social faculty and natural science (FNS) etc. In these faculties there are many
departments, this Informatics is one of them. And get by this it become a center of research.

At this time Hawassa university is a comprehensive university engaged in the provision of all around
education, research, training and community service through its diversified areas of academic.

2.2. Statement of problem

 The current system is very time consuming.
 It is very difficult to analyze the exam manually
 To take exam of more candidates more invigilators are required but no need of
invigilator in case of online exam
 Results are not precise as calculation and evaluation are done manually
 The chances of paper leakage are more in current system as compared to proposed
system
 Result processing takes more time as it is done manually

2.3 Project scope

Scope of this project is very broad in terms of other manually taking exams.
Few of them are:-
 This can be used in educational institutions as well as in corporate world.
 Can be used anywhere any time as it is a web based application
 No restriction that examiner has to be present when the candidate
Takes the test.

2.4. Limitation of the system

There can be many problems that occur, from these

 Students should take the exam once

 Security

 Random generation of test questions

 .net support only server side scripting

 Timed exam
5
HAWASSA UNIVERSITY

 Completely data base driven application

3. PURPOSE
The purpose of on-line test simulator is to take online test in an efficient manner and no time wasting
for checking the paper. For students they give papers according to their convenience and time and there
is no need of using extra thing like paper, pen etc.

This Web Application provides facility to conduct online examination world wide

It save time as it allow number of students to give the exam at a time and display the result as the test
gets over, so no need to wait for result. It is automatically generated the server

 Administrator has a privilege to create ,modify and delete the test paper and its
particular questions
 User can register, login and give the test with his specific id, and can see the result
as well

3.1 Exam Process

1. Applicants (users) apply for the exam online or through other medium
2. After evaluating the applications admissions are sent to the accepted candidates
3. Users register and take the exam and submit the answers.
4. After evaluating answers examiner issues result.

6
HAWASSA UNIVERSITY

4. FEATURE
 Secure
 Easy to use
 Reliable and accurate
 No need of examiner

5. OVERVIEW
The online test created for taking online test has following stages
 Login
 Test
 Result

There is a quality login window because this is more secure than other login forms as in a normal
login window there are multiple logins available so that more than one person can access to test
with their individual login. But in this project there is only one login id i.e. administrator id and
password by which a person enter the site. Hence it is more secure and reliable than previously
used on-line test simulators.

TEST:
Test page is the most creative and important page in this project. It consists of 2 modules
namely:
 Subject selection
 Utilities
 Subject selection:-
From the given choices the candidate can select his field (like C, C++ and JAVA etc) for
taking on with the test.
 Utilities:-
It includes:-
 Skip and come back to the question afterwards if needed.
 Give the list of attempted and unattempted questions and can go to any question directly
and can either attempted or change the answer of the already attempted question

7. REQUIRMENT
7.1 Functional Requirement
 The users should be able to register online for the examination online after accepting the
application
 The system should be capable of storing users’ records
 Examiners should be able to setup the papers without involvement of other technical
personnel such as developers, system administrators.
 Examiner should be able to issue exam index numbers to the candidates
 Examiner should be able to modify the system passwords and change the authentications
if there are more than one user.
 Examiner should be able to receive answers securely through the system.
 System should be capable of presenting both MCF(matching, choosing, and fill in the
blank) and essay type questions
 The system should be capable of present questions at once or one by one according to the
requirements of the examiner.
 The system should be capable of generate statistical data for examiner
 Number of registered users
 Number of users on exam at the moment
 Number of questions answered by the users etc.
 The system should be synchronized with the server time and should be capable of disable
answer sheet automatically after time out
 On automatic answer disable, the system should be capable of accept answers on that
time (Submit option should be activated or automatically saved)
 System should not allow one candidate to (one index number holder) to take the exam
more than one time.

7.2 Non –Functional Requirement

 The system should be designed in as a secured system applying security measures
 Special exception handling mechanism should be in place to avoid system errors.
 Should be capable of giving access to concurrent users without degrading the system
performance and accept answers.
 Sessions of each candidate should be synchronized with server and duration calculations
should be done according to the server time.

8. OBJECTIVE

8.1 general objective

. The main objective of on-line test simulator is to efficiently evaluate the candidate thoroughly
through a fully automated system that not only saves lot of time but also gives fast results.

Behind the proposed system is to provide a comprehensive computerized system, which can
capture, collate and analyze the data from these wards and evaluate the impact of the program
8
HAWASSA UNIVERSITY

8.2 specific objective

 To design and develop the online examination system

 To allow faculty to create questions. Questions can have multiple options, multiple
answers or can be text answer

 To allow faculty to create sections. Sections can be timed, sections can have individual
questions. Each question in sections can have marks

 Sections can be random or sequential

 To allow faculty to create test and answer key

 To allow faculty to give additional time to students with disabilities.

 To allow automatic grading recorded

 To create the application according the Hawassa University rules and regulation

 .net support only server side scripting

 Timed exam

 Completely data base driven application

9. EXISTING SYSTEM
The whole process of assigning test and evaluating their scores after the test, is doing manually
till date. Processing the test paper i.e. checking and distributing respective cores used to take
time .
The first problem is that there are loads of hard copied documents being generated. This brings
us to the age-old discussion of keeping information in the form databases versus keeping the
same on sheets of paper. Keeping the information in the form of hard-copied documents leads to
the following problems:
i. Lack of space – It becomes a problem in itself to find space to keep the sheets of paper being
generated as a result of the ongoing discussion. The documents being generated are too
important to be ill-treated.
ii. Filing poses a problem – Filing the documents categorically is a time consuming and tedious
exercise.
iii. Filtering is not easy – It becomes hard to filter relevant documents for the irrelevant ones if
the count of the same crosses a certain manageable number.
iv. Reviewing becomes time-consuming –

9
HAWASSA UNIVERSITY

All the process done manually at the centers and all the records are maintained on the papers. So
the maintenance of the record is very difficult in the departments and as well as it’s very difficult
for the workers to check the record. The Existing system is paper based, time consuming,
monotonous, less flexible and provides a very complex working schedule. The chance of loss of
records are high and also record searching is difficult. Maintenance of the system is also very
difficult and takes lot of time.
v. Result Processing is slow due to paper work and requirement of staff

10. METHODOLOGY
This project is a web application that is developed in .

 HTML

 Advanced java

 Apache tomcat 6.0 -> server

 Microsoft access-> database

 Sql -> query language

10.1 Data collection

There are different methods for gathering information .I use methods for data collection for
identification requirement analysis.

 Interviewing: - it is just asking a person who is near (who works )to the department .

 Observation: - the way of observing the current activates of the system.

 Document analysis: - reading the document available in the organization.
