307-05 Automatic Transmission External Controls 2012 - 2013 Focus

Description and Operation Procedure revision date:

External Controls - Overview

The selector lever cable is clipped onto a ball head on the selector lever.
At the transaxle end it is clipped onto the ball head on the gearshift shaft. The cable is moved in an axial
direction by operation of the selector lever. The axial movement is converted into a rotational
movement of the gearshift shaft by the gearshift shaft lever. The selector lever cable adjuster is located
at the transmission end of the cable.
Selector Lever with Select-shift Switch

Item Description

1 Parking lock release button

2 Switch for the ignition key interlock

3 Selector lever lock solenoid

4 Select-shift switch
The design of the selector lever and the layout of the selector lever positions have been changed.
The selector lever has the following positions which are arranged in a channel:
 P
 R
 N
 D
 S
In the selector lever position S, the transmission can be manually shifted by operating the Select-Shift
switch which is located on the side of the selector lever. The Select-Shift switch is hard-wired to the
TCM. The upshift or downshift signal is transmitted to the TCM via two lines.
When the ignition is switched on, the brake pedal pressed and the parking lock release button pressed,
can the selector lever be moved out of the P position. (Also refer to Park Lock Control, in this section.)
The engine can only be started in the P or N position.
The following components are integrated in the selector lever assembly:
 Select-shift switch
 Selector lever lock solenoid
 LEDs for the selector lever position display
 Switch for the ignition key interlock
If the selector lever is not in the P position when the driver tries to get out of the vehicle, then a signal is
sent to the instrument cluster and to the locking solenoid for the ignition key interlock via the switching
contact for the ignition key interlock. The locking solenoid is then energised, and as a result the ignition
key cannot be removed from the ignition lock until the selector lever is moved to the P position.
On vehicles equipped with the keyless vehicle starting system, the signal of the switching contact for the
ignition key interlock is sent to the instrument cluster if the selector lever is not in the P position when
the driver leaves the vehicle. When the driver's door is opened, a message is displayed on the
instrument cluster ('Move selector lever to P') and the warning buzzer sounds.
Park Lock Control
Drivers in some countries (e.g. Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam) routinely and customarily
need to leave their vehicles in N when parked in most urban parking situations to allow others to
manually push their vehicles around to access parking spots around them. Due to the ignition key
interlock (which prevents key removal prior to shifting to P) and the Selector lever lock solenoid (which
normally keeps it locked in P until the key is reinserted and turned to RUN), automatic transmission
vehicle owners in these countries have traditionally overridden the Selector lever lock solenoid by using
its mechanical override which is typically intended for service use only (via button or access hole in
shifter trim panel).
The Park Lock Control feature is a temporary extension of the normal electronic Selector lever lock
solenoid functionality (key in RUN mode), for up to 30 seconds immediately following the ignition
transition from RUN to OFF to allow shifting from P following ignition key removal, and thereby
overriding the Selector lever lock without the need to include or physically access any mechanical
override mechanism. During this 30 second period, drivers may optionally shift out of park by stepping
on the brake (same as during ignition = RUN), then exiting, locking and leaving their vehicles. Park Lock
Control immediately terminates and locks the shifter from any further shifting from P (until the next key
ON-OFF cycle) after the first of either (1) 30 seconds of key-OFF time, (2) 4 minutes of combined time in
ACC and OFF, (3) after the driver door is opened. If a particular parking situation doesn't require
override usage, the rollaway theft protection of the vehicle's key and Selector lever lock are then fully
functional until the next ignition RUN cycle (without needing to deactivate Park Lock Control manually
through the information display).
Park Lock Control must be turned ON in the vehicle assembly plant end-of-line configuration based on
the country of sale (which activates its information display menu screen) AND "ENABLED" in this screen
by the driver prior to first use. For low trim series vehicles that do not include an interactive menu
screen, Park Lock Control must be ENABLED for use using a Diagnostic Service Tool. Once ENABLED, one
of three instructional driver information messages will be displayed during the 30 second active period
following each key-OFF event.
For bladed key vehicles, there is normally a continuous battery drain of ~100 mA through the ignition
key interlock solenoid whenever the shifter is left in an out-of-PARK condition. Due to the fact that this
feature is used daily in affected countries, a relay is included in affected vehicles that switches OFF this
power drain whenever the ignition key-in switch is OPEN.
Although PEPS (Passive Entry Passive Start) vehicles do not have a key interlock, cannot prevent key-OFF
& removal if the vehicle has NOT been shifted to P first and don't have that particular key-OFF electrical
load issue, usage of the Park Lock Control feature and its order of operations (i.e. (1) shift to P, (2) turn
OFF vehicle, (3) press brake, and (4) shift from P) is recommended for PEPS (Passive Entry Passive Start)
vehicles also to minimize other sources of key-OFF battery drain.
