Notes For CHE

The document discusses properties of the normal distribution and provides examples of calculating probabilities and values using the normal distribution. It defines the normal distribution as being symmetrical around the mean, with the mean equal to the median and mode. It also defines the standardized normal variable z and provides examples of finding z-scores, areas under the normal curve, and probabilities for various scenarios where the data is normally distributed.

NORMAL DISTRIBUTION

Properties of a normal curve:

1. It is symmetrical about the mean.
2. The mean is equal to the median, which is also equal to
the mode.
3. The tails or ends are asymptotic relative to the
horizontal line.
4. The total area under the normal curve is equal to 1 or
100%.
5. The normal curve area may be subdivided into at least
three standard scores each to the left and to the right of
the vertical axis.
Area to the Area to the
left is 0.5 right is 0.5

THE STANDARD NORMAL RANDOM
VARIABLE
A normal random variable x is standardized by expressing its
value as the number of standard deviation () it lies to the left
or right of its mean (). The standardized normal random
variables (z) is defined as.
Z = x -  or equivalently x =  + z.

Z = x – Mean
s
Note:
1. When x is less than the mean, the value of z is negative.
2. When x is greater than the mean, the value of z is positive.
3. When x = mean, the value of z = 0
Examples
1. The mean and the standard deviation on an
examination are 70 and 10 respectively. Find the
scores in standard units of the students
receiving the marks
a) 65 b) 70 c) 87
2. Referring to the preceding problem, find the
marks corresponding to the standards scores
a) -1 b) 0.5 c) 1.25 d) –1.75
Examples
3. Find the area under the standard normal curve
which lies:
a) to the right of z = 0.56
b) to the right of z = -0.75
c) to the left of z = 0.72
d)to the left of z = -0.10
e) between z = -0.97 and z = -0.67
f) between z = -0.94 and z = 2.25
4. Suppose the temperature last May was normally distributed
with mean 30C and standard deviation 5.33C. Find the
probability that the temperature is between 34.2C and 36.45C.

5. Suppose the waist measurement of 200 female instructors are

normally distributed with mean 65 cm and standard deviation 6
cm. Find the number of female instructors with waists
a) between 65 cm and 70 cm; b) greater than or equal to 72
cm;
c) less than or equal to 60 cm.
Examples
5. A normal distribution has a mean of 118 and a
standard deviation of 11. What are the two scores
containing the middle 85% of the distribution?

6. In a qualifying examination for admittance to the

College of Arts and Sciences, the mean score was
65 and the standard deviation was 8. If 40 students
scored between 60 and 75, how many students
took the qualifying examination?
Examples
7. Records show that in a certain hospital the distribution of the
“length of stay” of its patients is normal with a mean of 10.5 days and
a standard deviation of 2 days.
a. What percentage of the patients stayed 8days?
b. What is the probability that a patient stays in the hospital
between 9 and 11 days?

8. The salaries of employees of a certain company in Metro Manila

have a mean of P5,000 and a standard deviation of P1,000. What is the
probability that an employee selected at random will have a salary of
a. more than P5,000?
b. between P5,000 and P6,000?
c. more than P7,000?
9. The actual amount of Kraft Non-Diary
Creamer which a filling machine puts into a 16-
ounce” plastic container varies from container
to container, and it may be looked upon as a
random variable having a normal distribution
with a standard deviation of 0.05 ounce. If only
3.01% of the container are to contain less than
16 ounces of creamer. What must be the mean
fill those containers?

and the standard deviation=4.8. What are the probabilities that
this random variable will take on a value:
a. less than 87.2; b. greater than 76.4
c. between 81.2 and 86 d. between 70 and 80
2. From past records the number of complaints received per day by the
complaint department of a department store in Cebu is a random
variable with the mean=33.4 and a standard deviation=5.5. Assuming
that the number of complaints is normally distributed, what is the
probability that the department will receive in one day:
a. more than 35 b. bet 30 and 40 complaints

plant is normally distributed with a mean=1.5hrs and a standard
deviation=0.5hr, what is the probability that:
a. bet 1.5 and 1.75hrs b. it will not exceed 1.5 hrs?
