Research

The document discusses several research studies on patient satisfaction and quality of recovery. It examines validated questionnaires that measure quality of recovery, including the QoR-15 and QoR-40, as well as questionnaires that assess patient satisfaction with anesthesia, surgery, nursing care and interpersonal relationships with nurses. The document also discusses factors that influence patient satisfaction, the important role nurses play in determining overall patient satisfaction, and how assessing satisfaction can help improve nursing care quality.

According to the research of Berning et al “Influence of quality of recovery on patient

satisfaction with anaesthesia and surgery: a prospective observational cohort study.”
They have used a validated quality of recovery questionnaire and a multi-item patient
satisfaction questionnaire.
For quality of recovery measurement, we used the validated and psychometrically
evaluated questionnaire QoR‐15 from Stark and colleagues, a short form of the
comprehensive 40‐item questionnaire QoR‐40 3, 17. The QoR‐15 provides a valid,
reliable, responsive and easy‐to‐use method of measuring the quality of a patient's
postoperative recovery. Compared with the QoR‐40, it covers the same elements of
quality of recovery but with fewer items and thus is more efficient in evaluating the
patient's postoperative quality of recovery 17.
For patient satisfaction measurement with anaesthesia and surgery, we used a
questionnaire exploring: information (three items); communication/respect (three items);
nursing care (three items); and three items on an overall evaluation of patient
satisfaction. All items were taken from validated and psychometrically developed
instruments 18, 19

Borges et al. “Interpersonal relationship in nursing care can be defined, based on a

theory 1 , as the interaction between two or more people who communicate, transfer
values and energy from their roles in society. Such interaction is continuing, ranging
from a low to high effectiveness ratio in nursing care. This subjective essence demands
the search for support for its evaluation. “Nursing Care Interpersonal Relationship

Patients’ Experiences of Trust in the Patient-Nurse Relationship—A Systematic Review
of Qualitative StudiesKristine Rørtveit1*, Britt Sætre Hansen2, Ingrid Leiknes3, Inge
Joa4, Ingelin Testad5, Elisabeth Severinsson “Trust is essential in nursing as it has the
potential to create opportunities for the human being to gain faith, hope and meaning in
life as well as open up for new experiences. Trust is an interpersonal and essential
element of all patient-nurse relationships and requires nurses to create a trusting
relationship with the patients.”
Patient satisfaction has been viewed as a valid outcome measure of a healthcare
delivery system. Satisfaction evaluations reflect the expectations from the
patients’ point of view and compare with the realities of the care received.

Nurses are the frontline people that patients most likely meet up with, spend the
highest amount of time with and rely upon for recovery during their
hospitalization. Nursing care plays a prominent role in determining the overall
satisfaction of patients’ hospitalization experience[2, 3, 4]. Assessing patient
satisfaction with nursing care is important in evaluating whether patients’ needs
are fulfilled and subsequently facilitating in the planning as well as implementing
appropriate nursing interventions for patients. Determining factors contribute
most to patient satisfaction can further assist nurses in improving the quality of
nursing care. Hence, patient satisfaction with nursing care is an imperative
determinant of quality of care particularly in the clinical/ healthcare facility
settings[3].

The second section consists of the questionnaire related to the patient satisfaction
with nursing care. The questionnaire in this section was developed based on
Interaction Model of Client Health Behavior which consists of 20 items on a 4-
point Likert scale format (1= strongly disagree, 2= disagree, 3= agree, 4=
strongly agree). The questionnaire was divided into four domains based on
Interaction Model of Client Health Behavior: health information, affective support,
decisional control and professional-technicalcompetencies[1]. The questionnaire
was developed in English language and subsequently being translated into Malay
language.

Using Interaction Model of Client Health Behavior

Dimensions were established at the onset

based on a review of literature. These were
identified as follows: (1) the nurse as a caring
person, (2) the nurse as an information
provider and (3) the nurse as a competent
and skilled healthcare provider.

Measuring quality of recovery-15 after day case surgery

The Quality of Recovery-15 (QoR-15) is a recently developed, psychometrically tested and validated questionnaire.
Fifteen questions assess five domains of patient-reported health status: pain, physical comfort, physical
independence, psychological support and emotional state. The 11-point numerical rating scale leads to a minimum
score of 0 (very poor recovery) and a maximum score of 150 (excellent recovery).
