Amondo - Progress Report

This project report provides an update on the progress of developing an agri-food traceability system for smallholder supply chains. The report outlines the key work completed in the first four weeks, including gathering information, producing a proposal document and database design. Issues encountered included tasks not being completed according to schedule and confusion in extracting database information. The next steps planned are to focus on the coding phase over four weeks, with testing and documentation to be done in the final weeks. The project is currently behind schedule due to time spent designing the critical database.

1. Introduction
This paper outlines the progress report of the proposed project Agri-Food Traceability and Transparency
system for a Smallholder Supply Chain. The first section of the document discusses the work achievements
of the project during the first four weeks. The second section discusses the issues that were encountered
in the project so far. The third section outlines the next plan of action to take to complete the project in
accordance to the schedule. The last section gives the status of the project and provide its reasons.

2. Work achievements
The project’s schedule is based on waterfall model. Therefore, each tasks is to be completed before
moving on to the next tasks. However, the scheduled tasks were generic and done as deemed necessary
to progress.

The tasks that were completed or achieved during the first four weeks are outlined below.

 Gathering Information - The gathering of information was carried out and completed during the
second week of the semester break.

 Proposal Document – This is the first deliverable of the project. The documentation of the proposal
was produced in week one of the second semester after all the required information were gathered.

 Proposal Presentation – This is the second deliverable of the project. After proposal documentation,
it was then presented to the audience in week two.

 Database Model and Design – The most critical part of any system is the database. Every system
function upon the database to mainly retrieve and store information. More time was given to carefully
structure the database as it is very crucial. The design of the database took 12 days to complete and
it was done in week three of the second semester.

 System’s Interface Design – Since the proposed system is a web-based, the design of the main
interface was implemented. This is just the front-end and it is not yet connected with the back-end.
The coding phase will connect the front-end with the back-end. Depicts below the main interface of
the system.

3. Issues faced
Every project during its life cycle encounters issues and constraints. These issues and constraints hinder
the progress of the project unless they are addressed or solved. In this project, there were several issues
encountered during the first four weeks of the project schedule.

Issues Strategies Addressed

Tasks done but not Since it’s the first time to embark on such project to follow the schedule, some
according to the of the tasks as outline in the scheduled were not followed accordingly. However,
schedule. the critical tasks were done during the four weeks so far.
Confusion in Had confusion about the attributes and entities for the database but managed
extracting to extract required information after thorough discussion with the company’s
information for the supervisor.
database
Difficulty in After going through third year’s unit for Relational Database, I had enough idea
forming Database to form entity relationships of the database.
Relationship
Embedding Map One of the system’s requirement is to show location on the map. The google
into the webpage requires payment for using its google map API. Therefore, I need to improvise
to use other forms of maps to embed into the webpage.
QR code to store The main requirement of the system is to have QR code attached onto the
URL link to display vanilla package where it will store URL link. Upon user scan, it will bring up the

webpage upon webpage to show details about that vanilla. In order to achieve that in depth
scanning research will be carried out over the next remaining weeks.

4. Next plan of action

The initial schedule was outlining broad tasks and the specific tasks to be done on the major
components of the system were unclear. Working into the project, each specific tasks are becoming
clear. Therefore, the next plan of action is rather rescheduled and redefined. Upon completion of each
specific task will ensure completion of the project in time. Below is the rescheduled tasks to be achieve
from weeks 5 – 10.

Tasks Duration
Coding Phase: 4 weeks will be allocated to the coding phase. In this phase,
there are four major components that will be implemented. Of
that 4 weeks, each week will be allocated to each components.
 Implementing Webpage The implementation of the webpage interface will be done in
Interface week 6.
 Embed Map into Webpage Embedding of static Map API onto webpage will be done in
week 7.
 QR code rendering The QR code rendering engine will be done in week 8.
 Connecting Database (Back- The main coding will be done on connecting the front-end to
end) to Webpage (Front- with the back-end. This will take 2 weeks from week 9 to 10.
end)
Testing and Integration Week 11 will do testing and integration of the system.
Full Project Report Documentation Full report documentation will be done in week 12.

5. Status
At this stage, the project is very much behind the schedule. This is due to the complexity of the database
structure. More time was utilized on the database design process especially in normalization process.
Since database is the key component to this project, it has to be carefully designed. The best way to get
on track with the project schedule is to focus and allocate more time to the tasks ahead.
