RMO Mock 2019 I: 1 Instructions

1. The document provides instructions for a mock examination consisting of 6 problems worth 17 marks each. Candidates have 3 hours to complete the exam and partial credit will be given. 2. The 6 problems cover topics such as: proving properties of polynomials with integer roots; finding an expression for the number of "good" quadrilaterals formed by joining points with integer coordinates below a given n; properties of triangles related to their incircles and circumcircles; inequalities involving sums and functions of positive real numbers; finding the minimum possible perimeter of a triangle given properties of its incircle; and proving that a number divides the product of differences of distinct integers. 3. Candidates are wished best of luck

August 2019

1 Instructions
1.1 You have 3 hours to attempt this examination.
1.2 There are 6 problems in this test, each worth 17 marks. Partial progress
and/or progress in sub-parts of a problem (if any) would be duly rewarded.
1.3 I hope you attempt the examination honestly.

2 Problems
1. Let pn (x) be a monic polynomial with roots −n, −n −n
2 , 3 · · · −1, where n is a natural number. Prove that
the sum of the coefficients of the even powers of x and the odd powers of x are both integers. Also find
all n such that absolute value of both these integers is odd.
2. A cyclic quadrilateral with vertices on the Cartesian plane is called good if at least two of its sides are
parallel to each other and has slope = 1, −1, 0, ∞. Find, with proof, an expression
 for the number of good
quadrilaterals formed by joining the points in the set S, defined as S = (x, y) : x, y ∈ N, x, y ≤ n .
3. In a triangle ∆ABC, X, Y, Z are the points of contact of the incircle with the sides BC, CA, AB. Let
A1 , A2 be the midpoints of the line segments AY, AZ respectively. Similarly define B1 , B2 , C1 , C2 . Show
that the triangle formed by the intersections of the lines A1 A2 , B1 B2 , C1 C2 shares its circumcentre with
∆ABC. Further, prove that the circumcircle of this triangle always contains the circumcircle of ∆ABC.
4. For any natural number n, denote 2n 1
3 + 2
f (n) =
2n
Prove that for positive reals a, b, c the following holds ∀n ∈ N:
X −n−1 −n−1 −n−1 √
3
a+b+c≥ af (n)+(−2) bf (n)+(−2) cf (n)−(−2) ≥ 3 abc
cyc

5. In a triangle ∆ABC, the incircle touches AB, BC, CA at F, D, E respectively. Denote K = BE ∩ CF . If

A is the circumcentre of ∆KEF , find the smallest possible perimeter of ∆DEF , if all of its side lengths
are integers.
6. Denote Sn = {a1 , a2 , a3 , · · · , a2n } where a1 , a2 · · · a2n are distinct integers.
Denote by P the product: Y
(ai − aj )
i,j∈Sn ,i<j

2 n
−n+2
Prove that 2n 3 lcm(3, 5, 7 · · · 2n − 1) divides P.

Best of luck!
