First Young Filipino World’s Champion Carlos Yulo
Bringing the glory and pride to our country, a gymnast is added to the roster of Filipino athletes!
Carlos Edriel Yulo made a historic mark of wining the Philippines’ first ever world championship gold in
gymnastics in the 49th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championship.
The young gymnast topped the competition with a score of 15.300 beating the score of Israel and China.
Under his training, Coach Munehiro Kugimiya, a Japanese coach saw the potential.
Yulo admitted that the training with Coach Kugimuya, who is known to produce world champion
gymnastic, was really difficult but he soldiered on.
Because of Yulo’s achievements, he is selected to be one of the flag bearers in the 2019 Southeast Asian
Games that will be hosted by the Philippines from 1 to 9 December at the Rizal Memorial Sport
Complex in Manila.
Communications Secretary Martin Andanar congratulated Yulo on his victory. “It is truly a historic event
and we celebrate Yulo’s win with all our fellow Filipinos. We Expect great things form this talented
young man at the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” he said.”
BES Pride: Irish Tamondong wins 4 bronze 1 Silver in Swimming
Without interest in swimming, a grade 7 student wins 5 medals that bring pride for her former teachers
in Bolingit Elementary School.
Irish joined the Philippines Swimming League (PSL) with her coach Sir Jojo Buenaventora, held last
September 29, 2019 at Diliman Preparatory School in Quezon City. She was able to win 1 bronze in 50 m.
freestyle, 3 bronze and 1 silver in 25 m.
Irish Tamondong is a former pupils of Bolingit Elementary School who is now enrolled in Speaker
Eugenio Perez National Argriculral School (SEPNAS). She joined swimming because of her mother’s
encouragement. “At first I really don’t have interest in swimming, but my mother said, it will serve as
stepping stone for me to become successful in life. Because of my mother I was able to win a medal,”
she said.
